    Hi guys,

    Back again..

    Current build

    core i5 4690k
    32gb ddr3 ram
    z97-a asus
    gtx 970

    Have now procured some new items. (sorry for the copy and paste from Amazon description)

    Samsung MZ-V7E500BW 970 EVO 500 GB V-NAND
    Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz
    ASUS Intel 1151 Socket Z370 Chipset Maximus X Hero D4

    Looking for CPU suggestions and GPU.

    Thinking of shelling out for a 1080ti, but not 100% sure it's the best bang for buck since the 20** range came out.

    Budget for the CPU and GPU combined, I'd like to see change out of €800 perhaps.

    Also, can factor in the selling of my current hardware above to increase budget where necessary.

    Tower is a NZXT Source 340, wondering if it'll have room for a large card?
    Monitor is LG 34UM68 ultrawide screen 2560 x 1080.

    Main focus is gaming. I play a lot of VR games and a heavily modded version of skyrim, that's suffering with GPU performance issues due to mod's eating vram.

    I also have a Corsair h55, but I don't think this will fit a socket 1151?
    Perhaps a good air cooler this time.

    Any help would be great.

    (Also, I'd love not to have to worry about upgrading anytime again for a few years :p I know.. can't guarantee future proof etc, but this PC I currently have has been solid for the last 3-4 years. I've gotten more than my money's worth from it, and I'd like to do something similar)

    The RTX2080 makes more sense now, unless you can find a 1080Ti for cheaper, but those bargains seemed to have dried up a long time ago. Both cards are much the same, and at the same price point it really makes more sense to get a 2080 at this stage.

    A 9600K or 9700K would be the obvious choices, though not sure they'll work on that Z370 without a bios update first, depends how old it is, if bought recently it should be OK.

    Unfortunately your budget is miles too small. €800 would barely, if even, cover an RTX2080/1080Ti new at this point.

    At that budget, a 9600K plus RTX2070 on their own is going to run in at around €800-850. Both are still massive upgrades on your old parts.

    as long as the Maximus x hero is on bios 1602 or greater it will support 9th gen Intels

    if your budget has some room, say upto 1k..

    2070 circa £500
    8700k circa £340 (prices are a bit more in line than they were for the 8700k)

    a 2080 would be around 650-£700

    Ok, I've managed to up my budget to €1,500. (Plus selling the existing PC I have)

    Spec me up folks!

    If I need to, I can return that motherboard for a refund (via Amazon) and get a newer model. Box is still unopened.

    I assume RAM and that nvme drive are fine.

    Ok, have ordered 2080 and i7 8700k
    And the PSU too.

    Still not sure on that case, as I have the NZXT source 340 and would like a visual change :)

    Forgot what the S340 looked like :pac:

    My thoughts on the big case makers:
    • be quiet! - Understated but functional German boxes with light accents & curves
    • Cooler Master - MasterCase series are tanks but a bit oversized. MasterBox series are their baby brothers. Both have seemingly infinite options.
    • Fractal Design - very understated designs. Mesh-front cases have amazing airflow, Define series are great minimalism design
    • Phanteks - Nearly go too far in form-over-function (e.g. thermals)
    • Zalman - very old-school designs. Decent though
