yet he seems untouchable - what's the story there? Are they still terrified that the BBC will poach him?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,941 ✭✭✭Gen.Zhukov

They are terrified of the contractor house of cards falling down

They dump Ray - Ray then cannot get another position paying anything like he gets in RTE prompting the question - What about the "we have to pay the big stars the big money or they'll go elsewhere" RTE mantra?

and - If Ray can't get that money elsewhere, more questions for RTE - 1) why did you pay him so much for so long? - 2) have you and are you still paying Duffy and Tubridy too much?

A contractor getting turfed is RTE Achilles heel - They will do anything (including ******* more of our money at it) to avoid doing the right thing

The whole organisation is a shambles

As expected, rte website frames the new figures from a completely different angle:

After the last figs in July -

    The IT

Head of Radio 1 Peter Woods said the broadcaster would wait until further figures are available in autumn to examine a drop-off in its afternoon listenership at a time when its morning shows are on an upward trajectory.

“We are not 100 per cent sure on the afternoons, but we have seen a drift off from the end of News at One, and that peters out at the end as well,” Mr Woods said. “It’s hard to see what is happening and it’s hard to see where those listeners are going.”

Ray D’Arcy’s audience fell below the 200,000 mark to 197,000 for the year to the end of June. This has dropped from a 2020 high of 242,000 to what is the lowest full-year listenership for the slot since he took it over in 2015, shortly after rejoining RTÉ from Today FM.

There ya go Woodsy, whatcha goin do now?

    Here's more from today's Indo-

When asked about the slump in D’Arcy’s slot, head of RTÉ Radio 1 Peter Woods said that changes are needed to the show.

It is down and we do have to look at that programme,” he told Independent.ie.

“We changed the production team on it in the last while. It has one of the best series producers and also one of the best new producers. We got two new superb researchers so what we would be more looking at is the structure of the programme rather than the content. That's where we think we probably have to go with it.”

So Peter, you changed lots of producers/researchers and the figures continue to fall - WHERE TF DO YOU THINK THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE PETER?

In fairness to Ray, some of his drop in listeners may derive from the increasingly poor drivel that Joe Duffy serves up now with LiveLine.

I frequently find myself turning Duffy's rubbish off and don't bother coming back till the evening news starts.

Whereas with Duffy, he comes in on the coat tails on the news at one - before he starts leaching listeners like a rotten sieve.

I’m absolute miffed by Ray. No idea what actual remote broadcasting talent he has. It’s all just silly and juvenile kiddy nonsense.

Tubridy is bad, Joe very bad… but Ray!!! OMG

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,979 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

In fairness to Ray, he's a crap radio presenter and always has been.

That was masked somewhat on Today FM when all his little acolytes used to be talking 60% of the time and they had a full schedule of music through the show. But ever since arriving at Radio 1 he's been exposed for the poor imitation he is.

Those quotes from Peter Woods in the Indo make him seem like a drunken eejit in a casino trying to chase his losses by gambling some more.

It's time to start thinking about a replacement and an idea of what kind of show would work in that slot.

D'arcy is finished, should have been sacked 2 years ago - if the last couple of Heads of Radio One had any bollix.

What about Brendan O' Connor, Ray Foley, Marty Whelan, Brendan Courtney, Mairead Farrell?

    Any of those an improvement?

    No.

Well I don't mind Foley, but he wouldn't do that type of wanky magazine show.

Kathryn Thomas is good when she does it, give her the gig. Its the dead time before the serious listenership tune in for Drivetime anyway, so who really cares. They'd actually be better off with Ronan Collins' music and dedication show from 3 to 4.30 rather than from 12 to 1.

I never thought I'd say this but just give it back to Derek Mooney. His Eurovision obsession was nauseating, he could snarky in response to negative texts but overall his show was vastly superior to D'Arcy's

Also - he's a staffer so would cost considerably less than D'Arcy

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭Expunge

Mooney's starting to appear on Lyric FM, filling in for the likes of Marty Whelan, playing appalling camp music. I think we can take it that he's finished as a high profile RTE presenter.

Another day, another messed up intro.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,022 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

RTE should fire Joe Duffy and give D'Arcy the LiveLine slot. He's often at his best interviewing people. Might have the wrong agendas I suppose for RTE but still worth a good shot at it.

Sure all he'd have to do is talk 'on the phone'. Wouldn't even need to handle the actual calls. I'm telling ya, ray has the talent for de liveline.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,550 ✭✭✭avfc1874

Yea he'd have his stock questions like Joe has.... What's the name of the dog, and what colour is the car,

Ray has how tall are you, what age, and have you tried eating porridge, and running

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,704 ✭✭✭leath_dub

Not sure you're being serious here

Ray is a terrible interviewer. Rarely engages with the guest, has a set of questions he almost always uses - usually revolving around the height, home town and/or age of the interviewee. He spends more time giving his opinions and looking for validation of his views.

He is really terrible at waht he does and would never be as entertaining as Joe as he doesn't have his buffoonerish arrogance. Deep down, Ray is a very insecure person and needs a huge team around him to give the semblance of competence. Even they can't hide is technical inadequacies

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,704 ✭✭✭leath_dub

Just to prove my point. Ray's question to Myles Dungan: "So, you're well into your sixties...."

I don't agree - Ray is often at his best when chatting with people. And that's what a programme like LiveLine needs, someone who will chat with callers and let them talk. It's how the likes of Marian F and Derek Davis more successfully ran the show.

Duffy may occasionally be entertaining with his buffoonerish arrogance as you say, but ultimately he's more interested in his own ego and agendas. And that serves the show very poorly. Should be booted off the schedule.

Ah now both Marion and Derek in their prime had enquiring and intelligent minds well able to go with the flow of conversation and guide it and interject with intelligent points from time to time and so on like a proper chair , the complete opposite to D'Arcy, there's nothing to him, an empty head filled with nonsense who has never had an independent thought in his life, he'd bore you to death if you were ever stuck with him, radio or TV is not the place for him

Did I hear right today during the Bono's favourite sandwich bit? Ray's never had a chip butty??

As if we needed another reason to dislike him 😉

myles dungan seemed mildly irritated by ray today. hes operating on a different level of itellectual to darcy.

Not even once in his life? Kinda sums him up. What a controlled, boring life he must lead.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭rolling boh

He is a terrible presenter he is stealing a living off us licence payers though I wonder what type of show would work in that slot .

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,504 ✭✭✭SpitfireIV

He'll be insufferable today, lots of sighs *aaahhh*, sombre voice, a few instrumental pieces *queue Colm Mac Con Iomaire* a few more signs *aaahhh*......

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,704 ✭✭✭leath_dub

I'm not sure I have the stomach to listen to D'Arcy today. He's going to milk this for all it's worth
