Depends who serviced it, BMW dealer would update the history online and on the car like above, no paperwork anymore. Some BMW specialists do the same while smaller independent garages should have provided invoices.

If she has the car registered on https://www.bmw-connecteddrive.ie/app/index.html#/portal then she can see the same service history as on the car's iDrive.

Did she not look into any of this when she was buying?

    Shes registering now. Thks
AFAIK She bough this for 24K, from a main dealer, the only considerations att: white exterior & white interior, & cup holders.

Interesting video here of a guy replacing the EGR unit himself on a 530d F11. At least now I know where it is on my own car!

Whereabouts does it appear in the connected drive site? I had my egr valve replaced as part of the recall last year in Frank Keane and when I asked for an invoice to show the work was completed the service advisor said as the work was done under a BMW recall they would send me out a letter/invoice to say the work was completed

Nothing ever arrived from BMW and now I’m planning on selling the car privately now and I’d like to have proof the work was completed.

If you click on Remote Cockpit and then on the right hand site there is a History tab.

Note that I don't think recall work is logged in the car's service history. A call to a BMW dealer will be able to tell that the recall was done however.

I asked for and got a receipt the day I collected mine from Frank Keane.

I was driving home and realised I should have pushed him for a paper receipt\invoice. I’ll probably head back to them with the key and see if the sort me out with one from that

Just off the phone from BMW to book a service on my 5-series.

The EGR recall has now been upgraded to full replacement. My EGR was checked about 6 months ago and given the all clear, but a new recall is in the process of being issued to replace all outstanding EGRs.

Letters to be sent next week apparently

Mine was checked before and given the "OK" . They were playing a bit of a dangerous game not just changing them to start with .

    Just an FYI on this.

The EGR cooler on my car was checked over 12 months ago and given the all clear at the time. The car hasn't displayed any of the symptoms up to this point but I rang my local dealer after reading what IrishZeus posted above yesterday. They confirmed that BMW are replacing the cooler now irrespective of whether it is ok or not. I booked mine in.

    What's the timeframe for replacement?
I'm seeing for 5 series from Mar 2011 onwards.
Not sure what changed between 2010 and 2011 in models apart from the 525D going to a 2litre.
    Mine is 2010 525D 3 litre model.

I'd be ringing them and ask so that they have the part in stock rather than telling you on the day you have to come back another day for the EGR cooler.

Its a 4 to 5 hour job to have it replaced. I'd ring them and give them your reg to check if your car is affected. They will tell you over the phone.

I phoned BMW and they said even though the car was checked and it wasn't replaced last time, it would be checked again but no guarantee it would be changed though.

I did query if they felt it could degrade between the last time they checked and this time, would this mean if they don't change it they would need to keep checking it every year... The customer service agent was unable to give me a huge amount of confidence... She contacted my BMW garage and it will be "checked again" when it's in for service this wednesday....

    Really strange.

Bolands in Waterford is my local dealer - I just called them there and they confirmed it would be replaced this time (it was previously checked and not replaced in March last year) and I got a slot for this Thursday. I didn't have to ask to have it done either, the service tech just checked to see if the second recall had been issued on the system

Odd - that's the opposite of what I was told. She clearly told me that they are all now being changed, without exception.

Personally I suspect the reason behind all this is that BMW have realised the legal quagmire they would leave themselves in if they passed a part as fit-for-purpose, and it then sets the car on fire a few months later.

Yeah or they just didn't have enough EGRs to deal with the recall and they took a decision to inspect and replace the worst looking ones and then issue a subsequent recall for the remainder hoping there wouldn't be any fireballs in between.

If they don't replace the unit this time I'll be looking for a proper explanation!

I'm dealing with my local dealer, not BMW Ireland. It is the same dealer who checked mine over 12 months ago so had a record of it being checked and passed on their system, they still said it will be changed now. They did ask me if the car was showing any symptoms which it isn't but I think that was more to do with if the car needed to be dropped into them straight away or not.

Also rang my dealer who checked it last year and passed it without changing. They've confirmed they are replacing them all now so mine is booked in at the end if the month.

Interesting. I had my inspection last December with no change.
Should I expect another recall letter in the post to arrange replacement this time or did you chase them up on this?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,429 ✭✭✭Wailin

I rang the dealer on advice from others on here. If you wait for the letter there could be a huge backlog as everyone starts to book in at the same time.

Rang my dealer today and was told that the egr coolers that were deemed to be ok the last time are not being changed. Lady on service desk knew nothing about it. Very annoying.

Dropped car in today, they said the part would just be swapped out.

Got the car back today forgot to ask about the EGR change but I was told it would be just swapped out.

I was asked was I experiencing any symptoms, the only symptom I got was a whiff of exhaust when the car was started from cold. I couldnt smell it this morning so maybe it was related...

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,887 ✭✭✭IrishZeus

Dropped in this morning. Confirmed it’s a new recall and all EGR being replaced, regardless of previous inspection/condition.

Given the absolute **** show that I had getting it inspected (twice in the end) can't wait for this...

My 520D Touring is in for EGR cooler replacement today. The cheap bastids charged me a 9.50 EUR "sanitization fee" for the privilege. Hating myself at the moment for not digging my heels in and refusing to pay it.

For a recall that's an utter pisstake.
