Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Which SUV?

    Hi,

We are in the market for an SUV, budget circa €25k. We currently have a ford SMax which we love but a new one is not in the budget...and we don't need a 7 seater as kids bigger. We are just starting to look around and are considering: ford Kuga, Kia Sportage, Hundai Tuscon and Peugot 3008. The 2 things which are very apparent are the boot size in these suvs are much smaller than the smax and the third seat isn't a full size seat (the Smax has 3 full size seats). We are considering importing from the UK (our Smax was an import and much higher spec than what we would have got here). Where do we go from here? We have been to a couple of ford retailers, one said they would give us a few hundred euros the other 3-4k for the SMax. We have looked at the Kuga and Kia sportage. We need a small second car so our considering trading the smax in for this...Where do we go from here?

    Thanks

    Edzers

Mitsubishi Outlander? Much bigger than the options you have suggested.

None of those crossovers are going to give you the boot space of the S Max as these crossovers are based on medium sized hatchbacks.

Have a look at the Nissan X-Trail, it's basically a stretched Qashqai with a bigger boot. It's available either as a 5 seater or 7 seater (the 3rd row of seats can be folded down when not needed to give better boot space).

    For example:

Another vote for Outlander. Go for the hybrid and at least a GX4.

Huge boot and very economical if you plug it in. I think hybrid range is roughly 30km real world.

Most X Trails sold were the 7 seater version but the odd 5 seater pops up. The 7 seater would probably be a bit easier to sell on though.

are you willing to pay the tax to get a real SUV or does it have to be just a tall hatchback ?

Its not an SUV but would be a much nicer car to drive. A Ford C-Max maybe. A Toyota Verso is quite nice too.

    Peace and long life.

No worse than an SUV or a crossover. They were the Mummy wagon before the SUV/Crossover took over to become the new Mummy wagons. MPV's drive better than SUV's/Crossovers and are better packaged so more spacious inside. I also think with the new WLTP regulations coming into force that new SUV's/Crossovers will get more expensive as well as cost more to tax and people will eventually start going back to MPV's.

PHEV is 5 seater. Only the diesel has 7.

    Based on hatchback ... yes

    Boot space is significantly better
    eg focus 375, kuga 456.
20% bigger and way more useable with flat floor.

    Just Googled s max
    700 at 5 seats, 250 ish at 7

You have a point all the same on crossover v smax

Have to disagree. Crossovers are very much in fashion.

At the moment yes but will they still be in 5 or 10 years time?

They’ve been fashionable for the last 15 years anyway.

Mpvs were never fashionable anyway that’s for sure.

Not fashionable but practical when you have kids.

There are practical options that are much more fashionable and better looking. You are driving one :) (well if you need 7 seats you can get a diesel version).

Not driving one but did have one when the kids were small. Was the best tool for the job. And it was traded in after 5 years for 65% of what it cost!

I meant you are driving one of the practical alternatives now - the outlander.

Im currently looking at getting something practical and as the funds aren’t available for a Landcruiser or Touareg etc at the moment I’m looking at the likes of the Outlander, Rav4 etc. Personally I woundnt even consider an mpv but each to their own.

I found the verso ticked a lot of boxes at the time. It was also 15K cheaper than the outlander. In some ways it was more practical for young kids. Now rear legroom is a bigger issue!
