Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. and japan what?

What of Japan's threat to us. Do you not think a team capable of beating South africa in a world cup game pose any threat to a dysfunctional irish side in Tokyo in front of 50,000 home fans ?

i think japans threat to scotland is much greater than their threat to us.

    no its not.

if you predict a 1 point victory to scotland, are you dismissing ireland?

Oh make no mistake I've dismissed Ireland's chances totally at this stage. This team and and management were at the height of their powers a year ago. Sport is as much about psychology as it is about go forward ball and hitting tackles. I believe our talismen are no longer mentally at their peak, the resulting performances have suffered and our confidence is shot.

The odds were 100 to one on for ireland to get out of the group .. if the odds shorten to say 50 to 1 on to get out of the group , its a less desirable bet because its less likely to happen

Is that not the opposite of odds shortening?

im not being pedantic.... well actually i am...

but to go from 100/1 on to 50/1 on... the odds lengthen... not shorten.

think of it as 1/100 moving to 1/50 is lengthening.

for the first odds, €100 will return €1
for the second odds €100 will return €2

    so the odds have lengthened.

and if youve completely dismissed irelands chances at this stage, then there is no real point arguing with you at all.

Whilst POM can be great at the breakdown and line out, he doesn't fulfill the core duties of either a 6 or a 7 and that's an issue. His form isn't worth building a back row around to make up for his deficiencies either.

He fulfills some core duties of both and thats why so many coaches have chosen to do exactly that

He's exactly what Heaslip was accused of being for years, a showpony. Work rate is incredibly poor, on a consistent basis. That's undeniable, and given how detail oriented Joe apparently is, I don't understand how he stands up to scrutiny during reviews.

    Insert Jesse Breaking Bad meme.

Completely dismissed our chances of getting out of the group?? Or of winning outright? Because that would be seen as moving the goalposts ever so slightly, since getting out the group and odds thereon is what was being discussed.

How many tackles and carries did he make this season?

    I have no idea. Why?

Is carrying an important part of his game? Is he not ever present in the defensive line?

This is exactly the same sort of ****e that was talked about Heaslip, you’re right on that count.

I’d love to know though, if peter o mahony is a show pony, what is the show?

And as I said, his form no longer justifies doing this.

    Very weak Wales team
Hallam Amos (Cardiff Blues); Owen Lane (Cardiff Blues), Scott Williams (Ospreys), Owen Watkin (Ospreys), Steff Evans (Scarlets); Jarrod Evans (Cardiff Blues), Aled Davies (Ospreys); Rhys Carre (Saracens), Ryan Elias (Scarlets), Samson Lee (Scarlets), Adam Beard (Ospreys), Bradley Davies (Ospreys), Aaron Shingler (Scarlets), James Davies (Scarlets), Josh Navidi (capt, Cardiff Blues).

Replacements: Elliot Dee (Dragons), Rob Evans (Scarlets), Leon Brown (Dragons), Jake Ball (Scarlets), Ross Moriarty (Dragons), Tomos Williams (Cardiff Blues), Rhys Patchell (Scarlets), Jonah Holmes (Leicester Tigers).

Why is one Japan performance of 4 years ago worth more than 4 years worth of performances form Ireland?

And no one has even mentioned Russia or Samoa. The sheer arrogance of it

I'd say both of those are fairly important aspects for a backrower to excel in. He's regularly at or close to the bottom for tackles and carries out of the forwards. He made 1 tackle against Wales in the 6Ns. How is that even possible?

No proof that Ireland would do any better against a settled side with good coaching like Jersey Reds. We are a shambles after all.

Seemingly Joe and Gatland agreed in advance that this fixture would be squad players and next week would be closer to first teams. Welsh will probably be posting similar sentiments about our team.

    Fair play to him

Closed - hoping to replicate more Japanese like conditions (probably going to dry the pitch out as well).

Wouldn't be much point changing plan if Wales were still putting out a squad team - what would you learn from beating their second string? Next week will tell a lot more about where we are at.

Beirne and Kleyn both to travel them

Gives us decent lock and back row cover

Ringrose covering 10, if Carbery makes the Scotland game does that mean potentially 2 10s on the plane?

Doesnt look good for Ross Byrne anyways

Kleyn or Beirne travel, not both IMO
    Toner Ryan Henderson Kleyn/Beirne
    POM Stander VDF Conan Jordi

    Wouldn’t mind being wrong though

Porter covering lh on sat surely indicates he'll likely travel as one of 5 props, 2 specialist and him covering both?

    1. Kilcoyne, 2. Scannell, 3. Ryan,
    4. Henderson, 5. Ryan,

    9. Marmion, 10. Carty,
    11. Stockdale, 12. Aki, 13. Farrell, 14. Conway,
    15. Addison.

POM has another poor match and he will have to be dropped from the "starting" 15 for the big match's

He will travel of course but I could see him dropping down the spots

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,366 ✭✭✭yerrahbah

I don't think Sean Cronin will travel to Japan

  • Registered Users Posts: 392 ✭✭Sephiral

There's an outside chance that POM is playing for his spot by showing he can cover Openside in a pinch. I don't believe it, but it is his history of showing up for big games that is keeping him near the team right now. Ruddock incredibly hard done by IMO.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,464 ✭✭✭rodge123

    rte article quoting Schmidt:
“Rory and Tadhg [Furlong] felt it would help their preparation if they got more time this week."

I’m sure Byrne, Cronin, ruddock and many others felt they could do with more game time too!

The POM being dropped posts must not be a longer saga than the ROG/Sexton, Zebo/anyone threads.

When do people tire of posting such rubbish or will they, like a broken clock be right sometime.

I've always been on team Carty tbf in this debate but I do feel sorry for Ross Byrne.

His big chance came last week in an omni-shambles of a performance from Ireland, he had f***all to work with and didn't really do much with what he had.

The fact he's not fit (i'm guessing?) for this match basically means Jack has the advantage to just have a solid game and get on the plane.

Byrne has been unlucky but I guess them's the breaks.

Why do you think he's not fit, as opposed to just Joe favouring Carty at this point? Cos of the bench?
