It’s seems most top tier teams have arrived in Japan and we aren’t leaving until tomorrow. Surely an extra few days in Japan would be more Beneficial than a few days here?

Genuinely feels like sections of the media have been given the nod to big up Kleyn since the weekend. He was crap against Wales, I really don't think its up for debate either. Gave away 2 silly penalties, got stripped of the ball too. He didn't take a single line out and it noticeably improved when he left the pitch. You'd need a gargantuan performance for the rest of the game to make up for those mistakes, he didn't.

And this is nothing to do with his selection, just find it irritating that the media want to big up his performance now.

Read an interesting bit yesterday about Dan Biggar's applauded honesty in stating that he didn't score the try and was held up.

It was a very smart move on his part, rather than being incredibly honest. If it had gone to the TMO, they would have looked at the try and possibly shown Biggar to be offside (looks like he was) for the intercept.

That would have resulted in a kick in front of the posts for Ireland, but instead Wales were given a 5 meter scrum, and scored a try not long after.

The only one that copped it on the pitch was Sexton who immediately asked the ref to check the offside for the intercept, but before he could, Biggar admitted the ball was held up so the whole sequence of events leading up to the try was never looked at.

I'm sort of impressed with his quick thinking to be honest.

I dunno, seems he’s completely capable of making an impact to me

If you’re the type of coach who isn’t completely opposed to using a reserve scrum half, he’d surely be an ideal guy to bring on at the same time that you make that change.

I meant in terms of stereotype of the impact sub who's going to run at tired defences. Kleyn might knock them over from five yards out which is just as useful I suppose.

My point is that what I've seen of Kleyn (going back three years) doesn't tally with his apparent elevation to possible starter ahead of Henderson and Toner, so there must be something that the coaches are seeing that I'm not (which is of course their job). And if that's the case, then maybe it's not so crazy that he would actually start ahead of Henderson.

Someone else mentioned this above. To be honest I didn't think he looked offside at the time. The pass was fairly slow so he could have been a yard onside and still made it.

Apparently, Sexton had a chat with Dan after the game about it, and Dan felt he was offside.

At the time I thought he was saying it because he'd lost the ball to Kearney who had grounded it, which would have resulted in a 22 drop out rather than a 5m scrum.

There's no way Biggar was offside.

Once the ball leaves the lineout, it's open play and no offside line exists.

Sexton is trying to deflect from his own error, or he doesn't know the law.

Was it not the last time we beat New Zealand that POM was MOTM?

Should we just base the team going forward on who has won a MOM award over the last 4 years?

Genuine question, isn't possible that Biggar was offside before the the ball left the lineout and that's what Sexton was referring to?

I don't really care if he was offside or not to be honest, it's all a bit of a storm in a teacup but I'm just more curious from a laws POV

I don't know would he have been 10m back at the lineout judging by this pic? Would have been close had they gone back and looked at it.
Either way, smart stuff from Biggar. I'm assuming he felt he was offside too?

Nobody's suggesting that should be the sole factor. But a MOTM award in probably our best performance of the last 12 months, against the then #1 side in the world does tell us something.

(And you're well able to quote MOM awards yourself when it suits your argument).

Maybe, but it was very close. He's running forward at the time that picture was taken so run it back a second or two and he'd be three or four metres further back.

In any event, it's not an offence that can be referred to the TMO.

I don't disagree but they were very much on the back foot and somewhat threw the towel in. I'm not sure it would have made a difference yesterday, they couldn't live with us having tried for most of the first half.

They lost ground several times in possession during the second half. There isn't always a way back from that.

A few years back, a good few I was in RDS for Leinster v Racing. Toner was playing for Leinster and people said he was light. Chabal was playing for Racing

I can't find a video but Toner absolutely nailed Chabal in that game.....Chabal had the ball coming from a ruck and he ran straight at Toner, Toner jsut nailed him

    Found an article on it.....

If the ball was not held up and Biggar had grounded it could the TMO not then go back and check it? I thought they could check the last 2 phases before a try for an infringement?

Unless the TMO is asked 'is there any reason' at which point he or she may spot the potential offside.

They can no longer say "is there any reason", they have to say "please check for forward pass/foot in touch/whatever" and the specified infringement has to be clear and obvious.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,728 ✭✭✭Former Former

Yeah but encroaching at a lineout isn't a valid reason to disallow a try under the current rules.

If the referee agrees to refer the matter to the TMO he will indicate what the potential offence was and where it took place. Potential infringements which must be CLEAR and OBVIOUS are as follows:

    • Law 9.A. Scoring points
    • Law 10.1, 10.4. Foul play: obstruction, dangerous play, tackling a player without the ball
    • Law 11.1 (b, c). Offside: player in front of the kicker
    • Law 12, 12.1. Knock-on or forward pass
    • Law 16.5 (d). Ruck: offside at the ruck – players not joining the ruck
    • Law 17.4 (d). Maul: offside at the maul – players not joining the maul
    • Law 19.5 (a, b). Player in touch
    • Law 19.2 (d). Lineout: quick throw
    • Law 22. In goal (including ball grounded by a defending player)
    • Law 15.5 (f, g). Double movement.

I'd say the Irish media would be pretty cautious to be honest, not like that bastion of journalistic integrity that is Wales online ;)

Eitherway, Wales shot their bolt getting hyped up for the six nations and are looking a bit ordinary and tired. Kearney proving himself faster than North is like a microcosm of where both teams are at. Ireland are in better shape - and generally more dashing.

Both teams are contenders, I think Wales lack the depth to go the whole way and just don't have the track record against Southern Hemisphere teams that the squad can rest their hats on.

Alun Wyn Jones being spotted in James Ryan pyjamas really is the final nail in the coffin of Wales 2019 RWC.

It's probably been done to death but I've been away and missed the selection and Wales games so haven't seen or heard much of the discussions around it.

But how in gods name is Kleyn in the squad? I'm watching the Wales game here and the only time he's visible is when he's giving away penalties. He offers nothing in the line-out. His work rate isnt anywhere close to the forwards around him. He's been nothing but average since he recently qualified to be capped.

I'm just baffled as to how he's managed to get into the squad ahead of players who've proven their worth in international games when he's like a poor man's Quinn Roux. Tough and does a job but without Rouxs work horse attitude.

Its the weirdest selection I've seen since Michael Bent.

The last 4 / 5 pages about the Biggar telling the ref he didn’t ground it. How he might have been offside or not.

And not one mention of the howler from Sexton to pass him the ball... are people unable to see the mistakes he made in that game and how rusty he looked???

    Well yeah.

This was his first game in 4 months. One which he grew into as it progressed. Sexton was fine.

Mightn't have made much of a difference but take a look at Keith Earls ankle tap on Biggar just before the line.

Can't really call it a howler when a guy is well offside to get the intercept on pass in a set piece move though.

If he didnt look rusty then something would be wrong

He last played in the Pro14 final in May

IN the second half he looked to be up to speed and played well.....he was replaced then as everyone had seen enough

People complaining about Sexton at any chance is a small bit boring. He is current player of the year.....one of the best Irish players to ever wear the jersey. Instead of having a pop at him for no reason maybe try to appreciate him while he is still around

Its the weirdest selection I've seen since Michael Bent.

It's a complicated one but in a nutshell - Rassie has some compromising images of Joe, Peter Stringer and Tiernan O'Halloran at a petting zoo and has insisted that Kleyn is put into the team with the intention of him injuring some of our key lads in training and then throwing the quarter final against South Africa.

Rassie has had this in the works since before he came to Munster with VanGraan already lined up as his Manchurian. I know the doubters will be along shortly to point out that the pools hadn't been picked when Rassie arrived north but South Africa have been intentionally manipulating their world ranking for years so as to put themselves in with a high percentage chance of facing us in a quarter final.

Their loss to Japan, other notable defeats such as Italy were all intentional manoeuvrings by South Africa towards an inevitable quarter final shoot out with us.

Of course to us plebs it seems that Kleyn is there for his power in the set piece and contact zone. Ireland haven't shown our hand off fast set piece ball and I expect this is where we'll be delivering the fire works. Joe is a bit of a min maxer in terms of some of the traits he wants from players and Kleyn's selection might be evident of that.

Personally however I suspect it's the Rassie conspiracy. I'm not sure how but I'm pretty certain ROG is the one who sold us out.
