With the Italy game just over a week away - remember that time Larmour completely took this piss in Chicago?

**** or bust for us this year i think in regards getting over that World Cup QF hoodoo but then again look what's on the other end New Zealand or South Africa

It's not so much the NZ or SA bit that gets me. It's that they play each other first so have all the time until the quarter to prepare and rest for it, that's the worrying part.

I know. I don't want equal though. I want them playing each other last and beating the **** out of each other

In fact we could be out if we lose our first 2 games which will be tricky

Scotland have known to be tricky bastards and facing the hosts who will be fired up to hell

At least we won't have to worry about our quarter-final hoodoo then.

Seriously, we're going to win our pool. We might be unlucky and lose one game, but even that would be a big surprise. I don't believe that anyone here thinks we will lose two, I don't believe anyone here even thinks it's remotely likely.

    I'm losing patience reading this.

We're 35/1 to get eliminated in the pool stages. C'mon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,413 ✭✭✭✭Trojan

If we lose 3 of our pool games there's a very real chance that those 35/1 odds pay out.

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,863 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

we're 40 /1 to go out at the group stage.....

    NZ are 200/1
    SA are 40/1

    england are 9/1
    wales are 14/1

    australia are 9/1

    france are evens

some people are just need to wake up

That's kinda how it works alright in a RWC year! ROG was pointing to mental issues in 07 and 11. If injuries are to a minimum surely in with a shot?!

Right, this thing about the QF hoodoo needs to be addressed with some facts.

2007 - went out in the pools because we royally messed up our prep.
2011 - went out in the QF to Wales because we selected our second best half-back pairing and played right into the Welsh hands by doing so.
2015 - lost the spine of the team to injury and struggled to cope as a result.

There are 3 completely different reasons why we went out in the QFs. And 3 is a pretty piss poor sample set for anything. We messed up in 2007 and 2011 but there was feck all we could have done in 2015. Few, if any, teams could manage losing that many key players in one go.

We're going to need a bit of luck this time around for sure, but then every side needs an element of luck come the knock out stages of the RWC. Our form in the 6Ns was poor, but we've had loads of time to address that. And we're still massive favourites to top our pool.

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,863 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

thats argentina team of 2007 was actually class.... and so were the french.

even if we were going at top level we still would have found it hard to get out of that group, our front line 15 was very, very good but the back up were usually no where near the level of what they were replacing.

Yeah that is an incredibly long odds if. Who is the 3rd side we would lose a pool game to?

Anyway what if NZ lose 3 pool games. Or SA?

Ridiculous discussion to be having. Our seconds would be favourite against Japan.

Most Irish people are generally unable to think without an underdog mentality and as such the ridiculous pessimism has set in.

If we lose to Russia it could be 4 sure. May as well go whole hog.

Not qualifying for the qf would be the worst performance of Irish rugby in my view (unless injury brings us to5th string or some such craziness)

Why should we even bother showing up.....

Look at this way, in the space of 6 months we have gone from beating NZ and been named the number 1 team in the World to a team who will get kicked out at group stage and hasn't a hope

If Joe wanted to lower expectations before the World Cup, like everything else, he has done a brilliant job

No if we lose 3 pool games we definitely go out at the pool stages. Mathematically impossible to qualify for the qf with 1 win from 4.

We won't lose 3 pool games though!

Definitely for the Saturday games Id say. Think was same in 2011 for RWC in Australia

Remember when Japan beat South Africa in the pool stages? That was the biggest shock in the history of our sport arguably.

And sure in losing that game the wheels completely came off for South Africa and they were condemned to a pointless semi final against the eventual winners who comprehensively hockeyed them 20-18.

Signs point to the undeniable fact that we need to win every game in the pool stages without conceding a point or this tournament is a failure

It was NZ who said the team that won the game in Dubin would be number 1 in World....hence why I didn't say we where number 1, we where named number 1 :P

After the game in November, Hansen said:
"Since it was 1 v 2 today - as of now Ireland are the number one team in the world, so that result makes them favourites for the World Cup" said Hansen.

When asked about those quotes, Schmidt said:
"We are just focusing on the USA next week. I think he enjoyed a bit of banter. We can't control what people say, we'll take tonight and focus on the next 11 months". Schmidt disagreed that Ireland are the favourites for the World Cup, pointing out that the All Blacks have been the best team on the planet for the last 9 years.

    And now the bookies say:
    NZ: 5/4
    SA: 11/2
    England: 11/2
    Ireland: 7/1

It might be wishful thinking on my part, but the All Blacks don't seem quite as imperious going into this RWC as the did in 2011 or 2015.

Dillane played quite well for Ireland last season. Bit disappointed he's been cut. Not at all impressed by Beirne or Kleyn.

Rory Scannell missing out isn't really a surprise. The other centres are just better players.

I'm not shocked, he was an outside bet to make the final squad anyway, but being only one of two players cut and 43 still retained, that's tough.

Dillane's omission is more of a tactical choice from Joe I think. With Kleyn, he always seems to pick a workhorse/scrummager (usually Roux) as backup in the squad, and then Beirne is there as backrow cover as well.

    Kleyn will travel my opinion.
