TBH, it's not worth stocking the tank. It's simply too small to house anything bar a couple of shrimp in.

Yeah it has a filter but the nutrate still has to be cleaned

Only got 2 goldfish in it and thats all im using it for

Your tank is nowhere near big enough for 1 Goldfish never mind 2 I've a 200l tank and even that would be barely big enough. It's a shrimp tank really even a few white cloud minnows would be pushing it.

I assume you mean substrate? Small gravel siphon is what you need. You could just use a length of garden hose.

Nitrate filters are specialised best way of reducing nitrate is regular water changes.

I'd bring the fish back if you've just got them they won't live long in that tank.
Fresh water shrimp are quite interesting for a small tank

So you've tortured 2 fish for 4 years. Please don't come on here bragging about it when you've been politely advised that what you're doing is animal cruelty.

A 23l tank is too small for *any* fish, nevermind Goldfish that are extremely dirty fish and really belong in large ponds. To be kept healthily in a tank, one fully grown goldfish would require a 300l tank or so, 2 would need larger than that again. An 100l tank or so can be made to work when the fish are juvenilles and the keeper knows what they're doing but will need to be upgraded as the fish grows.

so i guess everybody is fooked

cause nobody has 1 fish and especially a 300 litre tank for it

what about the big corner tanks that come with a cabinet ( not sure of litre's ) but people have loads of fish in them and going by your logic you'd need a swimming pool to cater for what some people have in them

I have an 100l marine tank with 4 fish, a shrimp, some snails crabs and corals in it myself. It's apropriately sized for the livestock that are kept in it.

There are fish you can have 15 of in a small 56l tank, there are fish you couldn't keep a single specimen of in a 300l tank. The key is knowing the requirements of the fish you want to keep, or limiting your purchases to those species that can be humanely catered for in the size of tank you have / can afford. Unfortunately, you fell foul of some idiot in a pet shop who didn't know the first thing about fish (or who had given up trying to educate customers when all his boss wants him to do is sell more stuff instead of diverting customers away from the fallacy that goldfish are easy to keep).

The tank you have is suitable for plants, a few fresh-water shrimp and maybe a snail. If you want to treat your pets humanely, get them a much larger tank (not usually practical for a couple of goldfish) or re-home them with someone who has a pond and space for them.

Hi OP.

If I can be frank. With a 23 Litre tank the best and most efficient way to reduce the level of Nitrate in your tank is to do regular water changes. 50% weekly will be sufficient.

I am keeping and breeding fish for over 20 years and I handle Nitrate levels with my larger tanks by heavily planting them and running pressurised Co2 to enable the plants to utilise high levels of Nitrates. My heavily planted setups rarely go above 5ppm of Nitrate.

For larger setups, like breeding racks you can purchase a NFP Reactor but this is complete overkill for 90% of aquarium setups and would be pointless for your setup.

I am not going to go into the ethical reasoning of your current stock levels but the best way for you to handle your increased nitrate is to feed less and do water changes.

Water changes are a part of all fishkeeping, whether it be nano setups like yours or the 200-450 litre setups I run. If you dont want to do water changes you will end up losing stock and promoting algae blooms.
