Basic aerial for soarview ?

I have a Samsung tv which has soarview built in, I ordered an indoor aerial from amazon and no use, I ordered 2 more powerful ones and nothing. I then called the helpline and they told me the signal is weak to me and I'd need an outdoor aerial.

It's rare I watch any of the Irish stations so I've always put this on the long finger but I might give it a bash.

So will amazon or similar have an aerial I can use ? and also do I need some sort of alignment tool too ? Finally, will the side of a house be OK for the aerial or will it have to be on the roof ? There is a sky dish here and it's on the side of the house.

    Thanks

You can check the recommended transmitter, ditection to it and and aerial type on the saorview website.
    https://www.saorview.ie/en/get/coverage

A local hardware / diy shop or electrical retailers should stock a suitable aerial. Unless you are in a very weak signal area you may be able to mount the aerial in your attic on a bracket secured to one of the joists.

The attic would be great. I'm more than likely going to be running a cable from the same location from an eir router into the attic too so it would be excellent to kill 2 birds with one stone so to speak.

    Thanks for the info.

One of these cheap contract aerials would be suitable in the attic provided the signal is good enough. Which one will depend on what transmitter is recommended for your location.

Thanks for the reply. They are nice and cheap. I was looking at one on the woodies site last night and it was 90 quid or something.

Just regards the site above, I was looking for the cable to go with the aerial. Is the cable I'm looking for on that site under 'satellite cable' ? I'd say 15 metres would be plenty.

EDIT: When I enter my location into the soarview website, it' say's this :
    Site On-Air:Yes
    Channels: 48, 55

    AERIALINFORMATION
    Polarization:H
    Direction to:
    point (degrees)East (107)
    Distance: 12 km

I bought this one in Argos for €17.99 and it works great. Have it inside the attic. I’m about 12km from the nearest mast.

Yes I'm the same 12km too. Where did you get the cable for it ?

I previously had UPC in the room so just cut the cable coming into the attic and attached it to the aerial. The other end was already in the TV.

    Thanks for the replies lads.

Just to confirm, can you tell me if these would be the connectors and cable I need for the aerial in argos. ? I was going to order online but I was thinking I might just do a run on Saturday morning and try pick up the bits and pieces I need and get it done.

Lastly, just a thought. I used to have sky many years back. The dish is still up and there is a lot of cable going from the dish at the far side of the house into my sitting room. It hasn't been used in years. Would it be possible for me to cut the cable off the sky dish and use that instead ? or is it 2 different types of cable ?

    Thanks again.

Yes the satellite cable can be reused, satellite grade cable is always recommend for an aerial install.

Unless you're absolutely sure that you will never use the dish again (it can be used for free to air satellite), I'd leave the cables to it intact and run a new cable for the aerial.

Try and find a local electrical supplies shop, they should have aerial cable and connectors at better value than Argos or Woodies.

Thanks for the info, I see what you mean. I'll have a think about it. The problem is the dish hasn't been used in year's and is probably knocked off alignment.

I also see what you mean about it being cheaper elsewhere. I just checked amazon online and 25m is €6.34 as opposed to €27.99 in woodies. I was hoping to pick up locally just to get it done and dusted over the weekend though. I'll have a search around locally and see if there is any cheaper.

Thanks a million for the info guys!

Just one more quick post. I made my mind up. I'm going to order from freetv.ie, thanks for the link The Cush.

I have a bit of free time on Tuesday, so even with the 6.50 next day delivery with fastway, for roughly 30 quid I'll get the aerial, cable and connectors.

Again, thanks for the dig out lads, appreciated.

Just before I order, I was thinking about what Ten Pin said about the free to air satellite. The wire from the sky dish is still behind my tv even though I have the sky box packed away. Would this box https://www.freetv.ie/freesat-box/ do the job for the uk stations connected to the dish ? I would be taking a chance as the dish is probably out of whack but be good to have this aswell as the soarview I think. I'm just looking for the very basic box that will do the job. It's rare the stations will be watched.

Freesat HD receiver, perfect for the UK channels - https://tvchannellists.com/List_of_channels_on_Freesat_(UK)
Pop in the UK postcode on setup/install for the BBC/ITV region you require.

Just want to say thanks again for the info in this thread. I had the aerial awhile but just around to doing it on Friday and all is working perfectly. I got the gear from freetv.ie. Put the aerial in the attic and into the soarview tv and the stations came in straight away.

I'm delighted, so thanks again, the help was very much appreciated!!
