I got my first phone when starting college in 2000 - got it free for opening a student account with AIB. Can't remember which phone it was, but do remember it was expensive to keep topped up with credit at a time i was pretty poor - the novelty factor of texting wore off quick enough, think it was 10 or 20p per text...

It was a ready to go Ericsson GF738. The year was 1999. I was working for a call center in Eastpoint and they got a big contract with then Eircell to call and remind people who had not payed their bills. Not fun work but early on during training a lad from Eircell turned up with a huge box full of phones for us free, with credit too. Thought we were the dogs....

Think the 5110 was released in 1998!

You could be right. It was the 2110, with the pull-out antenna and the 9600 baud PCMCIA modern to plug into the laptop.

Mine was in 1988, it was a NEC 9A.

Got it from carphone warehouse for £999.00 (In the UK).

It was too big for any pocket, even a coat pocket.

1999 I had a Nokia 5110 like so many others. I was last in my group of friends to get one.

Mine was an Ericsson T10 in 99.

My dad had a mobile since 86, it was a Motorola on cellnet, a few calls and the battery was dead lol. Very impressive all the same.

Think I got mine about 95/96. Ericsson GA628. Replaceable key pad covers! I worked within the mobile industry from 2000 until 2018, so have been very lucky to have had nearly every cool phone out there!

I had that ericsson phone also in blue, around 2000 jeez I didn't realise it was introduced in 1996. Class phone for its time!

My first one also, I remember mine was 088 on Eircell also, I think it took 4 X AA batteries also if your charged ones ran out...

Then I got a Phillips Diga phone after that which was my first GSM phone...

Then a Siemens C25 after that....

I never really kept any of them unfortunately, be funny to see some of them now!

Yeah im actually gonna buy up a few vintage phones I've had previously for the craic on ebay, most of them are going fairly cheap with a box and charger!

Mine was around 1999-2000 Nokia 3100 or something like that . Also I think my first number was 087 . What network would that have been ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,454 ✭✭✭RocketRaccoon

2000 - Siemens c25. I find it funny that we were striving for smaller phones for years and then went the opposite direction. I had the Siemens sl55 in about 2002/3 and now have a Xiaomi Mi Max 2, they couldn't possibly be any different.

Remember seeing an advert in one of the evening papers for mobile phones for 4.99 in a petrol station on Shelbourne Road around mid 90s so went and got one.

I think it was Maxon phone (or was that name of the garage?) Anyway thing was huge, weighed a ton and antenna wasn’t far off a foot long. Still a mobile phone though!

    Eircel

The eircel aeroplane is still at Dublin airport where they use it for training.

It's only very recently if I recall right that the painted over the ad.

    1997 - Motorola D160
088 2092450 (Not my current 7 digit number)

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,802 ✭✭✭DopeTech

Around 2003-2004. Think it was the Nokia 3510i

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,442 ✭✭✭LollipopJimmy

2000 - Nokia 5110, bulletproof, 16 year old Jimmy dropped it many times and the worst thing that happened was the battery fell off. It's still in a box in the attic and I reckon it'd still work
