What causes this white colour on red?

What causes this white colour on red brick? This is a new wall less than 24 months old. Is there any way of avoiding it? I've tried power hosing it on a different red brick wall before and it came off some what. But that wall had 25 years or so years of service before it started to come out in a marked way.

This is caused by mineral in the bricks. Typically if bricks are left out in the cold and rain for a long time or if stored badly before use they take up moisture. The moisture leaches out the minerals.
