Latest injury update. Explains some of last weeks absenses. Terrible news for Cronin. https://www.munsterrugby.ie/2020/10/07/squad-update-edinburgh-up-next-at-thomond/#post

On the injury front, the medical department issued the following update.

Chris Cloete is currently rehabbing a neck injury.

Keith Earls is currently rehabbing a back injury.

Niall Scannell sustained a neck injury at training last week and will undergo surgery with the hooker expected to be sidelined for approximately two months.

Neil Cronin sustained an ACL injury at training on Monday and will meet with the specialist on Friday to discuss surgery.

There is better news for Conor Murray (thigh) and Shane Daly (groin) with both players expected to train this week.

Continuing to rehab: RG Snyman (knee), Joey Carbery (ankle), Dave Kilcoyne (ankle), Liam O’Connor (calf).

That's a dose of an update, the injuries are starting to pile up.
If, as reported, Craig Casey is called up as a development player I assume he will be released to Munster. There's no use in him not playing at the weekends and Munster will need him as they are down to Nick McCarthy.

The question is will covid procedures allow players to mix with both the national squad and that of the provinces?

Especially as IRFU may have to consider bringing the squad away to bio secure bubble such as the England cricket team did in July.

I'd assume if they're going to do that then Farrell will bring a playing squad only and leave the likes of Casey who'd be there for development back with their provinces.

POM cleared to play. Judgement says they took "mitigating and aggravating factors" into account.

Delighted that the game is going ahead and a speedy recovery to those impacted

It seems pretty trivial with everything going on but from a selfish rugby supporters POV, how many more games are going to be on the verge of being postponed this season :o

Obviously not the best preparation for a game, missing two days training and only having the captains run tomorrow

Team due to be named tomorrow at 12,

I hope I'm not speaking out of turn and I don't want to be a back-seat Mod

But can we not go through the whole speculation again of who may have tested positive when the team is announced please?

Look we all know it was John Hayes speculation over.

Yeah looking forward to the game will be interesting to see if we can move on from last week. Would love to see some good back play De Allende has to break his duck this week you'd feel

Team named: Munster: Mike Haley; Andrew Conway, Alex McHenry, Rory Scannell, Matt Gallagher; Ben Healy, Craig Casey; Jeremy Loughman, Rhys Marshall, John Ryan; Fineen Wycherley, Tadhg Beirne; Jack O’Donoghue, Tommy O’Donnell, CJ Stander (C).

Replacements: Kevin O’Byrne, James Cronin, Roman Salanoa, Gavin Coombes, John Hodnett, Conor Murray, Jack Crowley, Dan Goggin.

    Bit of mixing and matching.

    🤪

    Thats a cracking team selection...

Why does Coombes never get a start? I'm always impressed by him.

Is it a case of JVG not trusting him or does he have some glaring holes to his game?

Add “road signs” to the list of things he turns a blind eye to.

That was a very strong Edinburgh team

    Given we had:

    1) An inexperienced scrum half

    2) An outhalf starting his second match

    3) An outside centre and a winger starting their first games for the club

    4) Missed 2 days of training during the week

    5) Team selection most likely disrupted by Covid

    That was an excellent result

    Casey and Healy went well

A mention to James Cronin who IMO has been in great form the first two games.

Our two conference rivals from last season Scarlets and Edinburgh have lost their first two games

A top of the table clash vs the Blues in Thomond in two weeks, Monday Night Rugby

Tommy O’Donnell was removed with a head injury in the first half and will follow the return to play protocols.

Chris Cloete (neck) is in line to be reintroduced to team training ahead of the Cardiff Blues clash.

Niall Scannell (neck) will begin his rehabilitation with the medical department following surgery.

Neil Cronin (ACL) is scheduled for surgery in the coming weeks.

Continuing to rehab: Keith Earls (back), RG Snyman (knee), Joey Carbery (ankle), Dave Kilcoyne (ankle), Liam O’Connor (calf).

Its no harm to put a positive spin on it. For me Munster are going backwards and the pace of retreat is starting to quicken. I recognise that Healy was good and Casey is consistent. Hes not amazing ...hes like a Maurice Lawlor type of nippy scrum half..a busy bee but no more. The pack is brutal and by brutal I dont mean very aggressive and terrifying. They are sloggers ..Wheres Kleyn? Has he lost form or what..hes get steadily worse year on year with Munster. I remember when he first came..he was some player .,aggressive, explosive ,the lot. Overcoached I presume like the rest of them. That Munster team is going nowhere. They are a slightly above average pro 14 team...closer to Connacht than Leinster..

That's just the start of it tbh we could get away with keeping the ball.in the pack when we had maby the best pack in europe now we need to have the backs involved there's a bloody talented backline there but it's just one out runners all the time or hands there seems to be no structure to the attack and their hasn't been for years. I'm.unsure what larkham has done at all to be honest

What's the depth chart at SH now with Cronin's injury?
    Murray // Casey // McCarthy

Is that it? Or is there a final year academy option?

No 9s in the academy so that's it.

As far as I know there are currently no scrum-halves in the Academy.

There are a couple just out of school, that might have decent aspirations of getting into the Academy next year , but that's about it to my knowledge.

And with Covid rules , only contracted players are allowed play for either Munster or Munster A , so they are really thin on the ground right now in terms of cover.

    Well that's a shítter!

just pull a Nick Mallett and stick a veteran flanker with discipline issues and no passing ability there, that’s right, O’Mahony at 9, here we go lads!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,681 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

I'd assume someone like Angus Lloyd would be looked at short term if the injuries worsen

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭Tomtom364

If I remember correctly the last time we had a 9 in the bin it was Mike Haley that stepped up to play 9 for the duration as he had played there in his development.

Have any of the academy lads come up playing 9 in the past like Crowley maybe?

Im guessing Mccarthy will just be penciled in to play the full 80 some game with an emergency cover option similar to when Scannell covers 10

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 100 ✭✭rayd3

Crowley was a scrum-half until fifth year in school.

Lloyd now a full time Doctor and playing with Tarf. Doubt he has any interest in returning to pro rugby as a bit part

If Jack Stafford isn't extended by Harlequins then he's an obvious choice. His contract there was for the duration of the 2019-20 season. I doubt an NIE player is an option.

I expect the IRFU won't retain "development players" for the nations cup. Retaining a Craig Casey to hold tackle bags while he could be getting starts at Munster would not make sense.

The current Covid limitations are a significant barrier.

There are 2 or 3 scrum-halves outside the contracted group that played Munster A last season that would be capable of playing at that level again , but they currently aren't allowed due to the rules to protect the "Training Bubble" for the Pro14 etc.
