Not held my hoop. But that's awful defense.

All from forcing the pass. Think moving Crowley to 12 has been a mistake, tbh.

    ahhh lads

    Two straightforward tackles missed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,008 ✭✭✭leakyboots

Still time but that's that you think, we haven't gotten near to their 22 this half. Going to take a humongous effort or error. Need a quick score

  • Registered Users Posts: 19 kingofnazareth

interesting to see people here clearly not supporting their fellow Irish province in Europe. Calls to liveline needed tomorrow.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,726 ✭✭✭clsmooth

Questions need to be asked about leaving Ahern out on the wing. Hasn’t been in the game at all in the second half and Munster have struggled in the tight and protecting their own ball.

The quality of athletes the GP teams have on the wing are just different gravy to ours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,794 ✭✭✭Shehal

Lack of tackling and a line out have killed Munster far more, we wouldnt have been in this position if these factors were addressed.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,151 ✭✭✭fitz

Shoulder check from Saints 17 there to dislodge, should be a penalty Munster, not a knock-on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,764 ✭✭✭✭AdamD

Saints literally dragging the ball carrier to the ground at the back of that maul, how is that not a penalty?

Great effort from Munster, but it's clear that a lot of their players were knackered after 50 minutes. Lost a lot of metres in contact and slipped off a lot of tackles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,008 ✭✭✭leakyboots

Ref has been tough on us at times but Saints have been the better team this half, we don't deserve it. Poor ruck protection, errors in defence cost us.

Was an ask with the injuries and bench we had.

Best of luck to Saints, proper rugby club.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 953 ✭✭✭mun1

lots of ifs and buts today, and it was always going to be uphill with everything going on with injuries and illnesses.

Saints were there for the taking, but not to be .

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,577 ✭✭✭ulsteru20s

    i'm two screening this but…

there will be a ton of talk trying to figure out what 'mistakes' in this game led to you losing. You lost because of injuries and illness. Its as simple as that. There are mistakes in every game but no team can sustain that kind of deep front five attrition. Rugby is not the type of sport that allows you to overcome that unless you play almost perfect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 953 ✭✭✭mun1

gave everything they had as we always knew the would.

Well done all player sand coaches

Time to leave the thread for the rest of the day to the leinster supporters to gloat and pull our players apart.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,151 ✭✭✭fitz

Not that it matters, but that was a deliberate knock on there to prevent Zebo regathering, yet ref just ignores it to blow it up.

Munster could have won that. Too many mistakes , missed tackles and poor resourcing of rucks to protect ball though…can't turn over that much ball and expect to win.

  • Registered Users Posts: 482 ✭✭CptMonkey

Well that sucks. Didn't get going in the second half at all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,527 ✭✭✭Pepp1989

Great effort tbf. Lads playing with illness you'd wager. Versus the expensive one who didn't despite being sick for the last game too. Everyone who has played sport knows the type. The lads who dig versus the lads who drop.

Frisch crowley nank and (and sob on a few defensive moves) were all poor today.

Sob offensively, beirne, coombes, pom were good to great. Everyone else was fine. We lost because of those missing.

Neither of these teams are stressing the bulls next weekend.

Hopefully we get bodies back for urc run in

Proud of all our lads, went out on their shields, Munster Abu

I thought he was woeful! Cringey 'Oirish quips.

"Zebo looks like he's practicing his Riverdance"

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,726 ✭✭✭clsmooth

That’s a harsh comment towards RG. No one here knows the circumstances but I’m sure he would have loved to be involved in that. Would have been made for him especially in that first half.

Excellent first half from Munster. Second half was always going to be a challenge with the lack of depth in the front 5. Credit to them that they were still on it in the last 10 but as they were in the last meeting, Northampton were impressive as the game wore on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,477 ✭✭✭✭phog

I'm going to a Sexton here, we lost but we won.

Considering the run of injuries, Ryan's ban, the late changes and the bug in camp made it a mountain too high but it was a really good performance, obviously, Saints were in top gear and I did feel at halftime we needed to be ahead as our front row replacements weren't of the standard for knockout rugby.

I really thought we'd be trashed there today but with a bit more patience in attack or reduce one or two defences lapses and we could be well in that game on the 80th minute

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 214 ✭✭bartkingcole

They did well in the circumstances. A trip to South Africa next week would have been a killer. Now we just need to dust ourselves off, get players back and take a real run at the league.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,641 ✭✭✭snotboogie

100% Zebo and O’Brien are lovely footballers but neither has the pace for the wing at this level. Even our best athletes in the back 3 like Nash and Haley are a good bit behind the likes of Freeman and Hendy.

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,942 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

Lack of an alternative bench due to illness and injury is what beat Munster today. Archer and zebo shouldn't have had to start that game, never mind go full 80.

Still, fair dues for being in a position to take the game with 20 to go, tried legs and bodies are what saints exploited to their credit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,511 ✭✭✭sioda

This in spades TBF. Let's make a good run at the end of the season. I'd like the POM decision asap as it will settle the camp a bit.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,527 ✭✭✭Pepp1989

You are probably right. Probably my own immense frustration with him. Never there when we need him. Huge outlay. Supporters really stuck with him. Joining our rivals. Not all on him but just needs to be replaced now with someone reliable and available.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,794 ✭✭✭Shehal

Yes let's focus on the bench and ignore the shambles at the breakdown, line out and defence that was present even in the first half…

The team were under powered, depleted and some of them were vomiting during the game, POM Coombes and Beirne were all visibly unwell during the game, Casey and Crowley were both playing through illness too.

Yet despite all of this, they put it up to the top team in the Premiership for 60 mins when we had veteran props and wingers playing the full 80 with academy players on the bench for regulatory purposes.

I'm really proud of his team. They lost and Northampton were definitely the better team on the day, but the grit shown by so many of our players is truly remarkable

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,477 ✭✭✭✭phog

    +1

When you consider the bug affecting the team and also the guys missing from the team today was a good performance.

We needed a cushion in the scoreline at halftime, alas, it wasn't to be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 803 ✭✭✭jcon1913

Northampton were the better team on the day but Munster did their best under the circumstances.

Roll on now to the URC - we were going to be under massive pressure to advance further in this competition and now we can focus on one thing instead of two

  • Registered Users Posts: 295 ✭✭Hank the DJ

Not too disappointed to lose a game like that

Add, Jager, Baron, Kilcoyne Ryan, Synman, Nash, Daly to the first 23 and its a different game, bench was URC standard at the very best.

O Brien has been my player of the season, would love to see him at 12 giving an extra second to our attack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,634 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

cant understand leaving archer on for 80 mins.
We were getting minced in every scrum so and archer was a pssenger in the loose so surely the sub prop could have added something.

I was confident of a win until we lost snyman and daly.

Looking forward to next weekends games. Gonna be some classics.

I think there's a strong argument that Beirne is the most talented player we've ever had. In terms of raw ability he's the best Irish forward I've seen.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,555 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Beirne was incredible. Playing slat that level while sick is just insane.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

A game that showcased the very best of this competition; huge intensity and brilliant attacking ambition. Especially in the first half. Alas, not meant to be. Proud.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,634 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

and hes doing it from the second row, if a player had that performance at 6 it would be impressive enough not to mind in the 2nd row

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,039 ✭✭✭TomsOnTheRoof

Yeah that's a great point. His numbers for us this season are unreal. The level of influence he has on all facets of the game while playing at lock is ridiculous. Genuinely don't think it's hyperbolic to suggest that he's Irelands's most talented forward ever.

so Jackman was right that all was not well in the dressing room.

  • Registered Users Posts: 525 ✭✭✭Rugbyf565

I would gather that Munster will need to sign atleast 7 new players to be competitive next season: 1 loose head, 1 tighthead, 1 second row, 1 fly half, 1 outside centre, 2 wingers/utility back. Archer, Scannell are finished in the front row, Snyman gone, Carbery gone, Frisch gone, Zebo retiring, other wingers not fast enough, Haley rumoured to be leaving.

  • Registered Users Posts: 339 ✭✭ingo1984

LH and TH are possibilities rest of your suggestions ain't happening.

Second row we have kleyn, edogbo, Beirney, ahern, whycherley, hurley and Evan o connell in academy.

Out half we've Crowley, signed Billy burns, tony butler and Dylan hicks and tom wood in academy.

Back three we've Nash, Daly, SOB (tho like to see him at centre) coombes, Haley, campbell, and Ben o Connor and Shay McCarthy in academy. Our plight this season is this position was heightened by campbell and coombes being injured all season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 953 ✭✭✭mun1

I know all teams carry injuries during the season, but this is current injury/illness/missing list to players who would reasonably expect to make/cjhallenge for a place in match day squad

Killer, Barron, Buckley, Ryan, Jager, Salanoa, Klyne, Snyman, Edogbo, Wycherley, Nash, Daly , .

Alongside some of the younger crop/ next off the rank injured, Campbell, quin, Gleeson, patterson .

Players played their hearts out yesterday and couldn't fault them, but the bench could have done with a few of the above players about the 60 min mark.

Worst thing is only Nash/snyman/daly and possibly Jager will be back for SA trip.

Doubt that we will see this squad together for the remainder of the season (or ever)

Loughman, Barron, Jager, snyman, Klyne, POM, hodnett, Beirne , Casey, Crowley, Nash, Nank, Frisch, daly, Haley.

Subs: killer, scannell, ryan, Edogbo, Aherne, Coombes, Patterson, carbery, Zebo.

  • Registered Users Posts: 525 ✭✭✭Rugbyf565

Apologies, forgot Burns was coming in. Also forgot about Campbell & Liam Coombes, guess they’ve been injured for a year at this stage. Would still like to see Munster move Daly into 13 and sign a pacy winger instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,634 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

i think we might have to contend with the fact that some of those injured players might never get back, and some of them might never get back to the level required and some of them might get back after lengthy absences only to be gone again for another issue.

killer didnt ever look fit enough to me in his last playing period, and hes been out a while since. He needs to do a huge amount of work akin to what Cian Healy did to get trimmer and stay relevant if he wants to compete at this stage of his career

Apparently edogbo has had some very serious injuries and surgeries but has youth on his side.

Barron, Salonoa, Campbell and coombes are squad players, URC level players like klendennen and loughman that will fill in for European games but very unlikely to push for international honours of any significance

If frisch goes in the summer, and it all looks like he will then Munster need a solid midfield option as well as strengthening other areas of the side

  • Registered Users Posts: 339 ✭✭ingo1984

Loughman is already in the Irish squad. Kendellen has already captained Munster, already nearly has as many Munster appearances as tadgh Beirney, and is still only 22. Kendellen is five or six years away from his ability ceiling and I would bet my house he'll get a rake of Ireland caps.

  • Registered Users Posts: 503 ✭✭✭Happyhouse22

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,634 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

loughman got into the irish squad because of injury, hes not anywhere near at a level where he is pushing for the starting jersey.

Kendellen is a great player, but hes not shown anything like international level, maybe he improves as he gets into his prime but lets be honest if kleyn, snyman or edogbo were available beirne would have moved to 6 and klendennen would probably have not made the weekends 23

And il take that bet because players like hodnett, prendergast, deegan, penny, gleeson and ahern are ahead of him in those depth charts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,641 ✭✭✭snotboogie

Kendellan is 23 and needs to make a significant leap to start for Munster, nevermind Ireland. It's not impossible but Coombes and Hodnett were both nailed on starters for Munster at 23 and neither looks like getting a rake of Ireland caps. Would you think Kendellan will be a certain starter for Munster next season?
