Good player, Kelly. Didn't he play outside Hayden Hyde (who went to 'Quins) & Crowley at u-20 ?.

he played 3 Ireland U20 games, but I can't tell you which ones.

With talk of Milne (26) joining Munster next season, I wonder if Loughman (29) might be looked at for tight-head.

Might be one way of surviving after Ryan, Archer and Kilcoyne retire and assuming Salanoa retires.

    Could have

    Loose-heads
    Milne/Wycherley/Donnelly/one academy graduate

    And

    Tight-heads
    Jager/Loughman/two academy graduates

Did he fill in during a match or two and do okay or is my mind playing tricks on me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,384 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

yea he did. when 1 of the academy lads was a sub.

    again, not sure what games.

not a good look for our academy though, not trusting the young props or bringing in an unsuitable candidate in the first place.

He covered there before and didn’t look out of place. He has the size for it, so it might make sense to make the best use of resources to switch him over to tight-head.

Otherwise we are going to be very short on tight-head props next season.

So, we need one point to qualify for knockout rugby and a win to get a home QF. Obviously, we will be losing by 8 points until the 79th minute. Its the Munster way, after all.

No Hodnett but we get POM back. Butler swaps with Burns and a 6-2 split again

Hodnett is a huge loss from an impact perspective but hopefully POMs return lights a bit of fire and his leadership can guide us through the game.

Butler over Burns is notable as well.

Big games needed from the 2 Garryowen men, Butler and Gleeson.

to be fair, all of them.

Haley has been a bit off this season, with Daly gone, we need him to get his mojo back.

Good to see Kilgallon in, thought he went well v the AB's

We get POM back & loose hodnett

Loose daly get Kilgallon, hopefully we are better stacked for the remainder of the season, interesting to see Butler in for BB, I assume for pace as it will be a more open game than Saracens

I thought Haley started the season really well, but has fallen back a fair bit alright. Last weekend is probably the worst performance I can remember from him in a Munster jersey. I'd back him to bounce back tho.

Excited to see how Kilgallen goes.

Interesting that Butler is on the bench, I’d say Burns may not get a contract extension here.

Sneaky big opportunity for Munster tomorrow afternoon. Win it, potentially top the pool, and get home knockout games if the can progress. Would be great for the fans to get some knockout rugby at home this spring.

Considering how important a match it is I find it slightly bizarre. I know I rate Burns higher than most here, but he was pretty good against Leinster and I wouldn't be comfortable if Butler had to come on early.

Whilst I also thought he did well against leinster( he usually did when at ulster asxwell) their rush defense style of play suits him to kick in behind.

Outside of that he has had maybe one other OK ish performance

I was giving him the benefit of the doubt for a long while but he has been poor for us overall.

My heart sinks a little when I see him coming on, I'm more upbeat re Butler

I think for me, even if Butler has a poor game at any point he gains massively from the experience so I see it as an investment. We don't get much return from Burns poor form...

Totally agree. Even with Burns decent display against Leinster didn’t he have one kick up the middle of the field that went dead, came all the way back and proved a real turning point?

Overall, there’s no doubt he’s been a disappointment.

I’m reasonably happy with Butler getting the nod here. But having said that, I don’t expect to see him get much gametime at all if it’s anyway close.

It's a 6-2 bench, so there is a reasonable chance they'll have no choice in the matter.

Possibly so. But unless they are forced thru injury I'd be surprised to see him get 15+ minutes, say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,359 ✭✭✭sprucemoose

i may be wrong but i dont really remember burns being effective in terms of his kicking for territory against leinster, his general play was decent but it was butler who put in one or two decent kicks in behind the back three.

im not a big fan of burns though so it could be bias

Great to see Gleeson being rewarded again, fwiw, he's showing great impact off the bench. I don't think Saints are quite where they were last season either.

Lawes leaving, even at this age, is huge too, he was the difference maker for them in Thomond last season, imo.

    Now, did anyone say "ambush"….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,392 ✭✭✭50HX

Hard to know where exactly the premiership stands in all competitions.

We are 11th urc & beat 3rd in saracens last week.

Bath will prob be spanked by leinster.

Yeah Lawes was super in that game last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,252 ✭✭✭letowski

They don't have Furbank either who is very good. If the set piece and defense can go well, Murray is the perfect away day scrum half to game manage and play territory. I think there is an oppertunity for Munster. They should be up for it and they won here two years ago. I'd be disappointed is they don't give it a good go tomorrow tbh.

11th but we’ve played Leinster twice and two games away in South Africa. I don’t think it’s a fair reflection on where the team is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,146 ✭✭✭leakyboots

Very astute in terms of overall context ... lot of talk about how poor Munster have been on these here boards. Talk that seems to completely ignore the past couple of seasons where we finished top of the regular season league and won the whole thing outright.

There's a few players out injured waiting to come back that will be like new signings come the business end. I feel the better weather suits our attacking gameplay. Maybe I'm just an optimist!
