If only there was a quality rugby game...

Are you saying that signing Mathewson and Bleyndall for this season has brought the crowds flooding into games? I would have thought the chance of seeing Casey playing for Munster would bring more fans than Mathewson at the start of the season

To be honest Bleyndall is knocking around years and is hardly a big crowd pull either. Even if he was ever fit

Unless your point is that Casey's family live closer so are more likely to go to the game, absolutely neither of them is having the slightest impact on crowd numbers.

Winning impacts crowd numbers, which was the point.

Munster are on record as to Alby's contributions on and off the pitch. He was an All Black. He worked with a lot of the younger players, not just 9s. Casey will have benefited massively from Alby being there.

I don't doubt it - though its worth pointing out that similar is said of pretty much every NIQ. At a certain point there is diminishing returns on such things.

He played 5 times for NZ....hardly Doug Howlett(who up till recently was still part of Munster and could provide huge guidance to younger players)

Yes Casey may have gained if Munster had no senior international 9 in the squad, but they do have a certain player Conor Murray, over 80 caps for Ireland. Played in 3 World Cups, two Lions tours and was at one stage the number 1 9 in the World, still in top 5 as well. Would be not be a role model Casey could look up to?

All I am saying is the money could have been used fior better purposes.....Mathewson is just an example....

It's a simple fact that Seán O'Brien never would have had the career he did if he didn't train with Owen Finegan.

In the last 2 seasons he hasn't been in the top 5 scrumhalves in Ireland.

Murray was in terrible form for most of the season, Alby was probably ahead of him on form realistically. He made a huge difference coming off the bench in a number of European matches. He was one of our shrewdest signings in a long time.

to a point and then he was not getting near enough game time because alby was still here. Same with all the other young 9s

he was but was kept on too long.

They wanted to keep him longer. They went to great lengths that the MRSC AGM to extol the benefits of keeping him in the squad and I had to agree. It's a shame that he wasn't picked up immediately

we had him long enough. The other scrum halves have benefited far more from playing more games than they would not playing if he had been kept. There were benefits to having him there short term but

Munster officially confirmed De Allende, Snyman and Gallagher about two months ago.

EDIT closer to 3 months ago actually. 31st Jan. https://www.munsterrugby.ie/2020/01/31/munster-sign-de-allende-gallagher-and-snyman/

Simon Harris said today that he doesn't see mass gatherings happening this year. Which includes sports events, this would be devastating for rugby.

You’d have to think that large crowds would be one of the last restrictions lifted. Sports and concerts will take a really big hit for longer than other things, pubs too which will mean the second best place to watch sport (atmosphere wise) won’t be a runner either.

I think it was in the cards that there would be nothing this year...no GAA or soccer...where it could get a little dicey is if the Italian, Scottish & Welsh clubs decide they want to play out the league..... probably wouldn't happen... but would create a massive headache if it came to pass

Professional rugby could continue to be played behind closed doors. Yes you lose out on gate income, but you still have TV and sponsorship money coming in. Not in any way ideal, but better than not playing and having no income at all.

Can't happen I think... even in England..some of the footie players are against it...
Theres nothing to stop player's having it... spreading it amongst themselves and bringing it home to family.
Same issue with rugby players.. perhaps even more so with the level of contact

Sports Illustrated had article on that but it's so impractical that I'm not sure would it ever happen

It can happen once restrictions are eased. The Premier League (and most leagues across Europe) are planning closed door games as soon as their governments allow it. Players will do what they're contracted to do.

It has to happen. It professional sport isn't played until there's a vaccine (and there may never be one) and fans can attend, then there won't be any professional sports teams left.

It's much easier to do when all the participants are in one geographical area with the same geopolitical controls and medical frameworks. Can see the Gallagher Premiership getting up and running way ahead of the Pro14. Getting a situation where Italy and the UK are somewhat on par with Ireland and South Africa could take much longer. Also the priority will be the international game for the union led countries so I'd imagine the European cup could take a back seat next season especially if the rumours of two Six Nations are true.

RTE are polling on the best Munster scrum-half; Stringer out in front with 65% of the vote, Murray on 32% and TOL on 3%

    Something not quite right there.

Stringer was Munsters best Scrum Half

Murray was Ireland's best scrum half

But it will be public health officials making that decision not sporting bodies or team. I just don't know how it would be workable though

Just watched the Mun v Sale match that munster posted on their YouTube channel last week

    It
    Was
    Class

Except for the wierd glitch with the match clock
Had me questioning 'has rugby always been 40 minutes a half??'
