Few positives, but Crowley’s kicking has been good today.

Munster have one Springbok that’s a shadow of his former self at the moment.

Munster have been playing full strength teams quite often, only missing one or two to Ireland. We just don’t have a very good squad right now.

That Sharks side is far batter and it showed today.

Defence and breakdown big areas of concern.

Conceding 50 (so far), 38 and 42 in the last 3 games is nowhere near good enough.

    Dont try be clever now.

Ah okay so Sharks have been losing on purpose so gotcha.

Its easy to look far better when you dont have basic ball protection at the breakdown and throw intercepts.

Its easy to say how **** we are when we are watching the lads bottle it against a monster pack and 70+% humidity...

We have to learn and move on.

we will be back here in a couple of weeks (?)

4 vs Benetton too before the Ospreys game. It’s been a huge issue since that Toulouse performance.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,037 ✭✭✭KrustyUCC

Yes and we had been one of the best defences

Leamy definitely has his work cut out

Its not the losing of the game but i think its very unfair scheduling a midday kickoff in this climate for a visiting team.

Hodnett and Nash have been superb for us today

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,778 ✭✭✭Jump_In_Jack

Did you follow the signings the Sharks have assembled since joining the URC? Etzebeth, Kolisi, Tshituka, Mapimpi, Mbonambi. And have you noticed which players were prominent today?

Poor Crowley is absolutely shattered out there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,037 ✭✭✭KrustyUCC

Bit more respectability on the scoreboard but that shouldn't gloss over the awful performance

Defence and breakdown v poor …..once again at business end of season our squad limitations are shown up….Crowley still has a bit to go …Casey unconvinced ….front row across the 3 positions at business end of season won’t trouble many

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,686 ✭✭✭Shehal

What I noticed the our complete inability to resource our own ruck throughout. If you are looking at what signings the Sharks made you miss the overall point here, no matter who you have playing you cant win a rugby match without a ruck and the 3 tries that put the Sharks out of sight all originated from poor ruck retention from Munster.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,686 ✭✭✭Shehal

If the first two things are very poor it doesnt matter who you have in the squad.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,095 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

As much as i think Hodnett, Nash and Crowley, were brilliant.

How can I blame this on Van Graan?

A very bad few weeks for munster...

    What is Leamys job?....Defence?

    Its absolute muck....

Poor ruck retention due to pressure, the Sharks are a good side, hence they are playing at home, we are away, they’ve earned it.

Now that they have their Springboks available they will be in the race to win both the H-Cup and the URC. On paper the have as good a side as anyone.

Unfortunately Munster are underpowered at the moment. The Sharks pack were better in every position, and their wingers are both flyers, they could play the bosh game and the open handling game better than Munster. The better team won, and would win 9 times out of 10 in Durban.

Munster are going nowhere without a world class TH. Salanoa is constantly injured and even then doesn't look good enough. Knox doesn't look good either. Those 2 projects just haven't worked.

Crowley justified his selection but the backrow was completely outclassed. Thought Frisch was poor too..too often shot up leaving gaps.

Could have started younger legs in the backrow in Kendellan but that is stretching it a bit.

Even if Leinster went down there today they would struggle with heat and humidity.

Thought crowley went well behind that pack.

Front row again huge issue. Basic power game and we are blown away. We were losing breakdown from the off.

    Wingers were excellent.

Zero leadership on show yet again. Can't remember our international backrow player having any impact whatsoever.

    Hugely disappointing attempt.

The cricket scores and mental fragility of the group a big big concern. Not sure where they go.

Any money spent on anything bar Front row is a total waste in my opinion. I feel like the front row issues are going on for years now.

The Sharks have to go to Toulouse next round, you'd imagine that will be it for them.

Which is bad news for Munster's trip to Durban in round 18...

Its been poor for awhile now, constantly acting as if this is a one off issue is completely missing the point. They are 8th in the URC table so no they arent that good a side and for all the talk of missing internationals from watching them this season even when they had them they havent looked great.

No they wont, as soon as they come up against someone like Leinster they will be taken to the cleaners.

Easier to win when Munster give it to them on a plate.

Munster are in a situation that isn’t too dissimilar to the Republic of Ireland football team.

The players who were among the top tier in their positions are in (or approaching) their 30s, very much coming into the twilight of their careers. They’re being bookended by a number of very talented, but vastly inexperienced, young players. The number of players at that level of talent aged 25-29 is very little (Beirne aside?) in my opinion. Those are the players that should be really carrying this team and being supplemented by the natural class of the likes of POM and the young, energetic talents of Hodnett, Casey, Crowley etc.

There is going to be a couple of years of pain, but there are a lot of reasons to be positive about Munster’s future.

They are 8th in the table because the team they named today is miles from the team they typically name in the URC.

Etzebeth has started 3 URC games all season. Mapimpi has started 4. Kolisi has started 2. Mbonami 3. Ox Nche 4. Am 3. And so on.

I've been hearing words to that effect for the last 12 seasons.

The current under 23 crop is the best in 10 years or so but there is a huge glut in the second and back row with very little in the centre or front row. Munster probably need to sign a prop, hooker and centre (on top of what is already coming in) to be competitive next year.

    Agreed.

Munster need to put in the time and develop the players.

They didn't do it for a long time. Beirne is 31.

There is 8 players 3 of which are Munster academy graduates in the squad between the age of 26-28 (Shane Daly, Dan Goggin and Liam O'Connor)

    Antoine Frisch (26)

    Shane Daly (26)

    Jeremy Loughman (27)

    Liam O'Connor (27)

    Joey Carberry (27)

    RG Snyman (28)

    Dan Goggin (28)

    Mike Haley (28)

If you want to add 29 year olds you get 3 more players, 2 of which are academy graduates.

    Jean Kleyn

    Jack O'Donoghue

    Rory Scannell

There are 11 players in the squad over 30 and something like 20 that are 25 or under.
