Hi, I have an old Panasonic SA Ht-540 surround sound system and a new LG 65 UK6400PLF TV. The surround sound system is working perfectly and I'd love to get it working with my new TV but there isn't any digital input port on the amplifier, only Aux red and black, along with the scart.
I have tried connecting the aux leads to the corresponding ones on the TV without success so I'm wondering could I connect using a DAC with the optical cable from the TV? Or have I other options besides dropping hundreds on a new system which I can't afford, besides I love my old system.

    Hi rustynutz,

You could use a DAC which would convert the optical signal from the TV to analogue stereo. Something like the CYP AUD3 at around £40 would do the job. You wouldn't get true 5.1 sound from it though so it might be worth looking at a new surround set up. Most AV receivers now will have 4K passthrough via HDMI which would link in with your new TV.

Let me know what you think.

    Kind regards

    David

Thanks for the quick response, when you say it won't be true surround sound what do you mean, would it be similar performance to a soundbar for instance?

    Rusty,

it should sound as good as some soundbars given that it is a system with separate speakers and a sub, but the conversion of the TV audio output from optical to analogue stereo will mean that the system will not be able to decode any modern surround modes - however to be honest I think the SA-HT540 only had Dolby pro logic anyway which uses an analogue stereo signal - unfortunately with the existing system I think that will be as good as you can get..

Thanks again and keep us posted,

I received the DAC and optical cable yesterday, thanks. I hooked it up last night and while I can get sound through the system while watching sattelite and terrestrial channels, there is no sound while watching Netflix, have u any idea why that might be?

    Hi RustyNutz.

You might need to go into the Audio setting on Netfix or the television and switch it to PCM or Bitstream depending on which it is already set too.

This should sort the issue right out :)
