Seemingly innocent questions during interviews to catch people off guard

Don't be smart. There's difference between being naive and being able to dance fast. I realised it seconds after I said it. But I didn't want to dig a hole and say "oh I meant to say this to your baiting question". Anyway, now they probably think I'm autistic or something. Oh well.

You have mentioned in a previous post that you do not behave during interviews as you do on this forum, which I would well believe, as most folk tend to have the gameface will prepared for interview.

That said, the 'real you' usually comes to the surface pretty soon after starting to work in a new position. If your general tone, demeanor and behaviour is in any way similar to the way that you are coming across here, then I would wager that getting a job may not be the only snag that you are going to face, and that you may struggle to keep a position once you finally find one. I for one would not be putting up with this petulant class of behaviour from anyone in my own team.

I do not mean to be intentionally mean to you, it is just a neutral feedback based on the manner in which you are replying to people here, people who are also going out of their way just to offer you their opinion.

You mean they give out alcohol at work? What? If they said that to me I would've wondered was that a joke! What sort of age were these? and what kind of company.

It might have been best to just respond with a smile and say nothing. You never know what some people consider the right answer to sh1t test to be!

Life can be so hard when you don't fit the typical stereotypes.

Might be a UK thing, but "drinks trolley" Friday was (and in some places, still is) quite a big thing.
Many companies that had it replaced it with Pizza Fridays.

There are very few people who have never rushed in and answered the wrong thing. It could happen to a bishop. I know I have done it but I have also asked many an indirect question in interviews to find out if I really want to work in the place or not

I don't know how you expect anyone, least of all an employer, to take you seriously when you're going around making off hand highly offensive comments like that.

It shouldn't even have to be pointed out to you that saying things like that is unacceptable.

You seem to be determined to blame everyone but yourself, but if the attitude you display here is anything to go by, this is the least of your problems.
See Skallywag's advice in his response to me. He's one step ahead of you.

Actually, by answering yes it allowed it the conversation to flow better.

Blindslides? I really don't see it. They asked fairly informal questions to a young person just out of college, you and the OP are totally over thinking it.

What would their goal be? Get him to admit he's a party animal

OP should have just gone a long with it and kept the conversation flowing, just answering 'yes' is odd.
Then why did she phrase it that way? Couldn't she just have said "Did you go crazy?"

Unless you're saying she was baiting me without realising it. Which is a fair point by the way, if you're willing to admit it.

You mention PUA earlier and now that she may have been baiting you - would you be so worked up about this if it was a fella asking the questions?

Some serious lack of BS detectors on this thread.

There are two users, registration this month, with the same grammar, who are defending each other's posts. I agree with you that something is not right.

    Good catch.

Take a look at posts #63 and #99.

The irony being they 'don't appreciate mind games'.

    Deary me.

.... Anyway, in answer to the thread title, I was in an interview once, where towards the end of the interview, the interviewer asked me "it says here (looking at my cv) that you have good listening skills.... Can you tell me where I am from"

This came up in a passing 'off topic conversation' at an early stage of interview introductions about 90 minutes before hand...

Rabbit in headlights moment, I knew I was goosed. Didn't get the job either.

Great question. I'm stealing that 😁

Look they may have caught you off guard, fair enough but you need to accept that it was your responses that cost you the job.
Well who says I didn't get the job. It was only 10 days ago. I mean for all I know, if I don't hear back from the it might have been because of many other things that I said during the interview.

Are you really saying that my answer made me look that stupid? Are you that sure that it was because of that response?

I mean what do they say to each other in their meetings? "Oh no don't hire that fella, he said he had a wild time on his J1 five years ago"

With the same grammar? You have a total lack of common sense and no idea what you're talking about, that's what's not right. Excuse me for not joining in with the mob. I just weighed in because I've had this happen to me in the past and didn't appreciate it for reasons I've explained. Don't give up the day job to become a detective.

Dunno about trick questions, but I’ve had dishonest feedback. I know this because I found out the real internal feedback afterwards. It was upsetting because it all related to autistic traits irrelevant to the job, and I had impressed all the technical people.

    How did you find out?

You have no issues with the OP's autism comment in post #99 so?

Even though you are on the spectrum yourself ....

Oh Ya, totally fair game. He wasnt trying to manipulate me, he was just testing /validating the information in my CV about my perceived strengths. I was busted.

I think it's really rude and inappropriate, yes. So what? What does it have to do with his original post? You do realise you can agree with someone's point without liking them as a person, don't you? It's not primary school.

None. But someone who has PUA as a hobby might thing that there is which more gut explain this thread.

OP isn't autistic. That was another poster saying he didn't get a job because of autistic traits.

One time an interviewer asked "what drives you nuts ?"

I said " the steering wheel in me trousers".

The OP themselves said that the interviewers now probably think that she or he is Autistic.

If you haven't heard back in 10 days, honestly, it's unlikely you've gotten it. It could have been anything else you said, course. But take responsibility for your response to that question as well as all the other ones in the course of your interview.

Yes that answer could have made you look stupid. Course it could. And while it might not have been the only reason, it could have always been the straw. That difference response between yours and someone else's that could swing it.

Doubtful it's that but I meant more in response to you saying about your current time off. Conversation could have been "He was late for the interview and seems to be out a huge amount. Could be a concern with timekeeping and being prepared for work in the morning".

Yes. Which is not the same as actually being autistic, and is an insult towards actual autistic people. He isn't autistic.

I don't know. I was brought to a psychologist when I was a child after I put sand in my mom's coffee. I'm sure whatever conclusion they came to wouldn't look good for me if such papers still existed. My sister reminds me of this any time she wants to manipulate me.

That's a tough break. Very good lessons here though. This is how many police interviews are conducted these days.

The modern version of this approach to interrogation comes from a Nazi interrogator who went on to relocate to the U.S. after WWII and teach his methods to various U.S. governmental agencies:

'The Nazi Interrogator Who Revealed the Value of Kindness'

    https://psmag.com/social-justice/nazi-interrogator-revealed-value-kindness-84747

Works great with getting the truth out of people who might otherwise resist telling you the truth. Unfortunately if it's combined with leading (as police often do to get a confession; or as your interviewer did here to try to confirm a conclusion she'd made about you) it can lead to false confessions.
