You never hear much about it now. Can they cure it these days or something?

Where are they getting that PrEP is not available in Ireland? It's certainly offered in the Mater.

Still no actual cure, but symptoms and issues can be treated.

It has become a social disease, which is a scary thing for such a dangerous virus. Like having genital warts or herpes, you have it for life and it can flair up now and again.

Do we know how many of those diagnosed had the disease before arriving in Ireland?

The thread title seems to be off with the actual statistics.

Ireland doesn't have the highest rate in Europe

PrEP is available in Ireland but it is not funded by the HSE. A plan to roll out publicly funded PrEP to high risk categories is being considered by the department of health, with a decision expected this year.

Branded PrEP is about €400 per month, generic PrEP is about €80~€100 per month

    Oh great.

    More facts .

This thread is a playground of facts .....

It's actually true, the majority of diagnosed cases are recorded as coming from South America or Africa, half of them male gay. There are many Brazilian lads in Dublin now finding it much better than living in the gay unfriendly Brazil. Not that it makes our sex ed any better of course, and my guess is that the majority of Irish cases fuelled by drunken one night stands go undiagnosed as the threat is not taken as seriously in the straight community and testing is rare.

It's grand lads. It's just like chicken pox, you can only get it once.

I heard parents these days have aids parties like chicken pox parties.

If I remember the last time I saw stats "born abroad" and "no information available on place if birth" accounted for about 74% of new diagnosis in Ireland

Think the journal had a article with the stats

There was a report linked in the article with detailed breakdowns but the link seems to be broken now. You can still see some of them quoted in the comments. The report is from 2016 to be clear.

I am not quoting it to bash anyone; I happen to know someone in the community mentioned and I am happy that they can access diagnosis and treatment.

Mate life isnt binary. Though i can understand that thjs way of thinking is common in the spectrum.

    Having a beer =\= alcoholic
Smoking a joint =\= pot head
Having sex on weed =\= degenerate

A lot of the young men I talk to dont have the awareness of HIV/AIDS they those of us they grew up in the 80s and 90s did. Better education and better availability of condoms is key as well as a key information campaign

    https://www.hivireland.ie/hiv/prevention/prep-2/
a good outline on what Prep is and who for.

I disagree with it becoming blanket taxpayer funded. main indication is to protect high risk groups from contracting HIV from unprotected sex.
Widespread availability of free prep may paradoxically increase the number of cases of HIV by giving a false sense of security leading to riskier behaviour, and one is less likely to be compliant with the treatment regimen if it is free than if one paid for it oneself

Do you think immigrants from high risk areas should or should not be screened for diseases such as AIDS when wanting to live in Ireland ?

If you want to get a visa for America you can not have any transmittable infectious diseases and it has been like that for a very long time.
Everyone coming into the country should be screened. If they are on antiviral medication then they can make it so they basically cannot pass the infection on to other people. And in the end, they will live longer.
Or you can claim racism and let them die of aids because you would rather preach social justice.

AIDS is AIDS no matter how its caught. I made no value judgement. Its a very good method for reducing transmission risk on paper. i would wager education on transmission risk of HIV and appropriate risk reduction and condom use would be more effective and appropriate.
Prep is really just standard HAART/triple therapy that one would take if had HIV infection and the drug cocktail is not without side effects either

Whatever about the poor moderating that allows threads like these to exist across the internet, I guess we should be addressing the concerns of the lads that get worked up over this. I presume they're the ones most at risk of contracting HIV.

    https://www.hivireland.ie/hiv/prevention/

There are many ways to reduce the risks:
    • Practice safer sex – use condoms consistently when having vaginal, anal and oral sex. Check out our guide to using condoms.
    • Try to avoid contact with body fluids such as semen during sexual contact, and don’t share fingers, hands or sex toys.
    • Remember that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safer’ in terms of HIV transmission might still be risky for transmission of other STIs like syphilis or Hepatitis A.
    • Get tested regularly. Keep in mind that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms. Testing is available free of charge in many public hospitals.
    • Vaccinations are available for Hepatitis A and B free of charge from your STI/GUM clinic.
    • There is a post-exposure treatment available for HIV and Hepatitis B. Details of this are in the section on PEP.
    • If using drugs, do not share any drug using paraphernalia.
    • Educate yourself, know the risks, and take responsibility for your sexual health.

It's not the 1980s anymore. No you can't contact it by shaking someones hand, or some bloke giving you a funny look.
