    Hi there.,
    Looking for some advice.
Mother wants to pick up basic tv channels in her bedroom.

If she buys a saorview box will she need an aerial ?

Can anyone recommend a particular box, cheapish solution.

She has VM downstairs but just wants a few channels for her room.
She could get multi room but doesnt want to go down that route.

    She lives in dublin.
    Thx.

She will need an aerial, depending on where she is (ie where is the nearest transmitter) she may get away with something she can sit on top of the tv.
Any box is fine for just picking up the channels unless the TV already has a digital terrestrial tuner (DVB-T2)

Would she get something in the likes of currys or DID?

Not cheap, link above has plenty of cheap boxes - once they're set up you're done, don't need an official saorview box.

Would a Saorview TV be a better all-in-one solution? Some incorporate a satellite tuner, examples - https://powercity.ie/groups/10/11/589 , https://powercity.ie/groups/10/12/603 (dish required for the satellite tuner)

Or your Mother's TV might have Saorview already built in, depending on how old the TV is. What's the model number?

Do these indoor aerials such as the One For All brand available in Curry's actually work properly? I know your location needs to be within a fifteen mile radius of your nearest transmitter but there must be other factors which determine their effectiveness.

In D3 a one for all unamplified aerial works for me in one room downstairs perfectly. In other room it is v patchy.

Depends where you are, upstairs has a better chance of a good signal, being closer to the mast and so on - just pick up something cheap or borrow one and see if it works
Or just get an aerial installed - can get them done for around 80 euro. It's what I did.

If you want to buy a box they are available second hand quite reasonably.
As people upgrade their TVs the boxes have become redundant.

In a word, no. That is why the broadcasters recommend outdoor aerials.

One for All is no more than a simple dipole in a plastic box. An 8" wire on the end of coax is just as good (or bad).

Never get an indoor aerial with a booster (amplifier). You cannot amplify what is not there. What is there is lots of electronic noise and amplifying noise just gives you louder noise.

So just to confirm, an indoor aerial with a booster, never improves anything for the better?

The only reason to use an amplifier is to boost the existing signal if you intend to have a long cable between the aerial and receiver. It would then help overcome the losses in the cable. If the aerial itself isn't getting a good enough signal, no amount of boosting will help and will probably make things worse.
