    Hi folks,

Dell desktop. Fair age now. Stopped booting up.. powered on , Fan's spinning but nothing on monitor. Amber light on power button. Read a suggestion to remove battery for a few minutes..tried and won't power on at all now. Fan tries to spin and stops. Amber light on motherboard as below

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

any beebs when you turn it on ?
what output displays do you have
have you tried them all if they are more than one
have you checked the cable from pc to monitor didnt come loose
have you tried different cable from monitor to card
have you tried reseating the graphics card
did it have any issues prior to this, random crashes etc ?

Dells normally have a power button light up an ambur or have numbera 1 to 4 on front of case which also light up to give you sort of code to let you know whats wrong. Have you tried testing with another power supply had lots fail. Motherboards rarely go. If you have graphic card and also on board graphics try removing graphic card to test. Dell website you should find a service manual for your dell with troubleshooting steps. Let us know model number and version.

Also sounds like ram failure how many sticks do you have and maybe test with one if you have more. Cex has cheap enough ram so you could test with them.

For the last couple it months when it entered windows sleep mode it wouldn't wake up without a power cycle. Holding the power button in then it would boot with couple of beeps and stop. Holding button in again and rebooting and it would boot fine. Have tried HDMI cable to monitor and no joy. It's dedicated graphics card no on board graphics. If I hold the power button in now the fan sort of revs then stops them revs again.. it's an old machine but runs windows ten fine and we only use for office and browsing etc not sure what to do . Was thinking pick up cheap desktop on adverts it something but it's not that obvious what's new spec etc..

    Cheers,
    Mick

it's most likely the power supply, you'll need to replace it
