A member of my family has been in rental accommodation & is now moving to his new home. He will be closing the existing account & moving the account to new permanent address.  Will he get any bonus in that case. Or if he put it in his partners will they get the bonus.

    Hi hillbloom,

Thank you for getting in touch.

Anyone who opens the new account and sets up direct debit will receive the bonus as long as it is at least 12 months since they last received a bonus.

If your relative is in a contract for his previous account however, there may be an exit fee applied when he closes that account, but he can have this reversed once he gets in touch to advise that he is reopening his account at another property (no bonus will be applied in this case though, as it is within the 12 months).

If his partner opens the account in their own name (only they can do this), they will receive the bonus. The account can just be discussed with them from then on though.

Otherwise, when your relative closes the account for the previous address, he can register at the new address online with a meter-reading taken on his first day there.

    Best regards,
    Una

Thanks Una for your prompt reply.  He just checked and he got €175 ex gratia credit on 14th February 2018 when he moved into the place that he is now leaving.  Do you think he will qualify now.  It is over the 12 months. Can the ESB bill be in joint names.

    Hi hillbloom,

You are welcome - happy to advise.

Your relative would indeed be able to avail of the bonus again. Online, it is €150 credit for electricity, or €200 for electricity plus gas.

Yes, a bill can be in joint names. The person who opens the account just needs to have it noted that they wish to add another person's name. Then the other party needs to get in touch to confirm they are agreeable to this. After that, the process of adding the name can be completed.

    Best regards,
    Una

Una, Does he need to do it ON-LINE to get the bonus or can he just phone Electric Ireland with all the details. I am very impressed with your very prompt reply & how you answer my queries so well & understandable!!

    Hi hillbloom,

You are very welcome. I am sure Una will be delighted to read your kind words.

The €150 switching bonus is an online only offer. The is Electric Ireland's best switching bonus for electricity only. If he was to call our Sales team on 1850 305 090 he could get a switching bonus but it may be for less than the €150.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,
    Aoife
