I think Cork would have been the worst draw with Galway second. I think Cork are better than people make out and we are always working really hard for a win against them.

I think if we defeat Galway, it will be a great confidence boost going into the Super 8s, so it may not be the worst draw if we can get over them.

If RTÉ have first preference it’ll be on Sunday at 2 I’d say

As opposed to Meath, Cavan and Cork?

Cmon Galway have won the last 3 in a row in champ between the sides and 2 league games. They made a semi last year while the other 3 opponents were not even in super 8s

It's clear as day it's the worst draw even if it's still winnable. They'll be far tighter at the back than armagh and won't miss those goal chances

True, I wasn't really comparing to the other teams. On other hand, if Mayo aren't good enough to beat this Galway team this year, you've no business being in the super 8s.

Is Croker on Sunday a definite no when Westlife play there Saturday night?

If any possibility of it, could see a double header with Ulster teams Sunday?

I’d have them as the joint worst draws in hindsight !

Have you not seen our ever increasing injury list?

Have you not seen Galways? Oh what it must be like to actually have 2 midfielders fit!

To pre empt this willy waving before it begins, let's agree that both Galway and Mayo are riddled with injuries. Both are showing to have reasonable squad depth. Whoever loses on Sat/sun in likely decent weather should have no complaints

    Sky have 2

Agree if Galway play like they have been - I do think ye'll raise it though as always against Mayo

Yeah provincial system not fit for purpose at all

In fairness we could beat new York then Leitrim in theory but lose to Galway in final - then beat someone like Laois

Ulster will never have a potential easy route

Very true, with exception of Ulster, at the moment a straightforward route is very common depending on the draw.
Meath beat Laois in the provincal semi, now meet Clare to get to the 8s.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭jr86

The main positive is though that Galway are coming into this in worse form than the last 2 years and we should have won at least one of those

That said how good are we actually playing ourselves? Armagh are a level below Galway tbh

Worst possible draw for the mods on this thread

An unofficial GAA page on Facebook is suggesting that Hyde is unavailable due to work being done on it.

I’m sure Sky would love a double header with Tyrone match
We are prob lucky Croker is unavailable
Or unlucky given how we play up there .........

Sky have first pick of the games

well, Meath beat Carlow, then Laoi,s then played in a Leinster final and now meet Clare to decide.....

I'd much rather Galway Mayo in a provincial venue for this one.

The Hyde was unavailable for a potential Connacht final replay so it will probably be unavailable next weekend. I think Limerick has to be a possibility.

Could we be going to limerick yet I wonder ............or Ennis !

No hope and would we want it anyway?

You do know how long these stages take to put up/down?

Never mind the fact that they dig up a good quarter of the pitch at the hill end which has to be relaid....

Last time mayo played Galway in a knockout championship game
    1999 in Tuam
My family remember that day fondly
    Very fondly indeed

    ;)

That would be ludicrous. I'm sure most people in Galway and Mayo would take a coin toss for a home venue over that.

Ennis is a nice spot for the game. The terraces would be packed so atmosphere would be great.

It's probably the biggest pitch? It would probably be Mayo's preference given our difficulties breaking down the Galway defensive setup.I was very impressed with surface when we played Cork and Limerick there.

According to the ever reliable wikipedia :) it's 19,000 but I thought it only held around 14,000 when we played them there?

Dunno what it is these days. Anyone who really wants a ticket would get in but the GAA will probably hope to draw in a few neutrals.

Maybe we will see that at some stage next weekend again !

Just under 20k I believe. its on the border of being too small. Gaelic grounds would be a bit unfair for Mayo supporters but with the moterway not too bad, would suit me down to the ground tho.

That's the thing, by having to drive through Galway to get there, it comes across as being geographically unfair. Although, the same can probably be said about Tullamore as I'd imagine most Mayo supporters would drive through Tuam to get to Tullamore via motorway.

Limerick, double header with Cork and Laois?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭Mountjoy Mugger

You'd need to be there at 12.00 to get into the Mackem.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,019 ✭✭✭TCDStudent1

Galway are playing Mayo this weekend in minor this weekend too. It would be nice to double it up with that but I dont think that will be possible as I guess the minor championship is based on a Connacht home / away basis.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,345 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Coin flip anyone? That was the word at the Cul Camp. Pure speculation I'd say but the same lad is fairly clued in.

That's on Friday night in Tuam.

It would make sense to do a double header.

Im starting to think logically this might be the way they go, its 50-50 distance wise for both cork and laois.
only other option would be double header in Thurles, or play cork laois on its own in an empty thurles.

Would be silly to play Mayo v Galway outside of Connacht. Hyde Park has no such restrictions for qualifier games 18 to 20k max i'd expect as Galway won't travel in big numbers. John Prenty however might try and get two sides to toss for home advantage?

Heard that alright, but would be surprised if Mayo agree to that , playing in the rain with gale force wind on Sat night won’t be much fun for anyone if it’s in Salthill

Hearing that the GAA want a coin Toss, but Horan is refusing. all speculation at this stage

No way we should ageee to it
Literally every other possible venue suits us better than those 2

Saw it mentioned on twitter that a coin flip was offered, one team accepted and the other refused. So will now be decided by the GAA

Galway offered Mayo refused straight away. Absolutely correct decision

I'd sooner take Tuam over Salthill. Traffic not great for both, but Tuam is closer to Mayo and the wind can ruin a game in Salthill.

Grand but let's have zero complaints about wherever council decide so. Watch people flip a gasket now when Limerick is chosen

That's what I'm thinking too. Only 1 TV crew for Sky.
I hear there's works going on at the moment in the Hyde.

Tuam can't hold capacity for this and is also currently being worked on. Would not be appropriate for this match.

It is interesting that Mayo seem to have turned down coin toss. 50 / 50 chance of getting Castlebar. Unless they dont want to play Galway in Castlebar???
