Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Someone asked for details on G Best funeral

    https://amp.theguardian.com/uk/2005/dec/03/1

Does anyone seriously think McG will have anything remotely comparable when he heads off to the octagon in the sky?

    Not a hope.

He’ll have his grieving family, a few randomers and maybe a few true blue Dublin pigeons.

So I picked the same paper as you and according to them Joey Dunlop had a much bigger send off.

    https://www.google.ie/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/uk/2000/jul/08/northernireland.johnmullin1

    Was he more famous ?

To clarify. Someone Requested info on the funeral and I provided a link.

No I simply asked does anyone think McG will get a remotely similar funeral?

Looks like it. Does "greatest footballer" mean something different here that isn't related to his skill on the pitch?

You're getting more nonsensical by the post, asking questions and answering them yourself.

I'm not sure what that's all about but I've got a feeling you've got more time on your hands than I can spare.

    Best of luck xckjoo.

So fame is based on numbers at the funeral bit morbid tbh.

The reason you endorsed this point is because you don't believe when McGregor croaks can get 300 people at his funeral and 32k out for a gander you were pointed out that 50k came out for Joey Dunlop and couldn't answer whether based off your own criteria did that mean Dunlop was more famous than Best because now that looks ridiculous.

No not at all. I’ve already made my points in favour of G Best. Feel free to go back and read my points. Plenty on Wikipedia etc too if you want to do some further reading.

The funeral is a side issue but it does show the level of fame he had.

I live abroad and pretty much any time I say I'm Irish, the only famous person from Ireland people mention is McGregor.

But they'd all know Bono too though, McGregor is just in at the moment and really only with young people, Bono's been around forever and would be much better known across renerations imo

Lads there's only one was to settle this. Someone has to kill Bono so we can count how many people go to his funeral.

I would say McGregor is more known by people under 35 and Bono is more known by people over 35.

I also don't really care and this discussion is absurd lol.

How many people attended Bin Laden's funeral compared to George Best's funeral?

    I rest my case.

Seems to be pretty obvious that this story has been released by some powers that be in response to McGregors retirement.

Also it seems that McGregors team have some pretty big analytics team battling to keep the story off the top trends on Twitter, google etc.

It’s actually quite a fascinating PR battle. I’m just curious as to what the end game is going to be here.

I’d say Leo is glad he didn’t engage with him in Chicago anyway.

Leo may have some inside briefings on the legal trajectory. Best to keep a wide berth and avoid the stink and that's certainly what he did.

Well if me and the dogs on the street knew about the story I'm sure it had managed to get to Leo. And he's too politically savvy to go near anything to do with it.

If you are trying to suggest I'm a huge McGregor fan you are wrong.
The McTapper thing is something I'd expect to hear from a 12-15 year old.
    And it's old now.

No it’s not. It’s only getting started. It’s huge over stateside

Someone on here thought I’d made up the nickname. I sent them to google to show it’s a huge thing.

My god the McTapper stuff is cringe. Everyone in MMA gets submitted, if not in the cage itself then hundreds of times in the gym. If any of the people spouting it ever set foot in a BJJ gym I can guarantee they'd be tapping. Likely dozens of times in the space of a few minutes.

That's nothing to do with being a Mcgregor fanboy either as I'm certainly not, its just akin to seeing a physically incompetent fat slob in the pub calling an elite level footballer a useless prick.

Never heard that one! Tapping to me means riding. "Tapping up any nice girls round the town recently?" etc.

That’s an Americanism. “I’d tap that” etc

In Ireland/U.K. you’d tap someone up for a loan.

McGregor would have made a fantastic Morse code telegraph operator back in the day as he tapped out quicker than anybody else.

it's very hard to compare fame levels from now to 15-20 year ago. Social media has changed all that. How many "famous" people of today would be nobodies without intragram, facebook etc.

I never watch it nowadays. Love watching YouTube vids of old fights/watching a young Tyson.

A farce of a fight sure but boxing is relatively healthy now. Some really great fighters out there and the last few years have given us some amazing fights.

McTapper was never funny. It's always been stupid. However, it's slightly less shít than McNuggets. El Tappo was actually pretty good given he was doing the whole El Chappo thing at the time. It gave me a laugh at the time. Why any one would use McTapper instead of El Tappo I will never know.
