Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can someone explain why a broken leg results in a horse needing to be put down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,376 ✭✭✭Shemale

Two really classy young Irish hurdlers with massive potential lost at Cheltenham in the last few years.

    No way of fixing it

Very sad, was so calm getting the shoe fixed , really didn't expect that.
    RIP

What's more upsetting is how quiet and proud he looked while getting his shoe done, he didn't deserve what followed

By virtue of horses being horses, they have a lot of weight on their legs, they are born to run around. They take ages to heal too.

I read about some decent stallion who broke his leg and he was in a harness in his box for about a year and his lad slept in the stable with him, purely because he was worth so much at stud. IIRC he died from an infection resulting from the break.

Near impossible to fix it. You can’t tell a horse not to put weight on its leg.

Without wanting to cause any tension, as a once a year punter, I find it very hard to justify racing at the cost of something like that.
