Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It's complicit in the same way as I'm complicit in rising sea levels every time I take a slash.
In fairness, this is fairly accurate - boards isn't 'overrun' by alt-right types. But there is a significant number, far in excess of their presence in normal society. And the degree of anti-immigrant threads and comments is increasing over time.

I don't like the term 'alt-right' - it's an American thing (coined by white supremacists who wanted to give themselves a snazzy new name) and not in any way relevant here, despite the best efforts of weirdos to adopt their language (I've literally been called a 'cuck' and a 'soy boy' by posters on here - I think one of them was from Tipperary, which I found hilarious, imagining those words being uttered in that accent).

I don't think it would be controversial to suggest that there are a few posters on here who use the same kind of language as that terrorist in Christchurch and are unhealthily preoccupied with race and immigration. Not many, but certainly more than in the past, and way more than the average person will encounter in normal society. Doesn't mean that they have any intention of ever hurting anyone. Nor does it mean that they weren't disgusted by the attack. I'd hate to see them continuing to increase in numbers though, and this place becoming a 'safe space' for the far-right.

There are more than just a few who tolerate the far-right - and from reading this thread, you'd be forgiven for thinking that they tolerate white nationalists far more than they tolerate those whom they refer to as 'SJWs' (another tedious Americanism). They claim (wrongly) that they're two sides of the same coin, but they get a whole lot more worked up about one side than the other...

Edit: I just seen a guy on telly with a Jack Daniels tee-shirt... I believe it to be a personal reply from St Anto himself, I'll find what I'm looking for at the bottom of a bottle. Soldier on I shall!

doesn't say anything about the racists being white or Irish - it just says racists.

Of course there will be isolated incidents unfortunately. But that doesn't make Ireland a racist country.
    Isolated to attacks on foreigners I guess;

There are racists in Ireland alright, as my nonwhite partner would attest to. The feral underclass for instance. Public transport is a chore.

In general middle Ireland is fine.

By their actions, if not their words, the upper middle classes are keeping themselves seperate from travellers, foreigners and non-whites in their places of abode and work.

Your naivety is touching. Racism goes across all classes, all genders, all nationalities, all locations. Some people are better at hiding it than others.

You may well be right - that the racists don't have any intention of ever physically hurting anyone. However, they do fuel the hatred that empowers and emboldens others to carry out the kind of violent attacks that we've seen in Ireland and elsewhere.

So are you now saying the racists in Ireland are foreign born? Ok so .

Let's go back over the facts. I never said anything about where the racists were born, mainly because I don't have any information about where the racists were born. I just referred to racists in Ireland.

You jumped to conclusions that I was commenting on the skin colour and ethnicity of those racists. I didn't make any comment on the skin colour or ethnicity of those racists.

    You made a mistake.

The irony of calling out re-regs is startling when the rest of your post is taken into account. Also, did you just create this thread to have a go at Wibbs? Seems you couldn't wait to name drop him. In a thread complaining about "extremists", you pick out a very reasonable poster. It's all a bit sad and bitter.

I agree with the last statement - in fact, as in all moral system, which by their nature cause hypocrisy, often those who bleat the most about racism are by their actions more racist.

This is a good example of how boards is complicit. Notice the team work between the mods before the thread got taken down. And notice the team work between the mods looking for an excuse to take it down since no one else was having a problem with it.

Check back when a storm approaches, over 5000 at a time keeping an eye on the weather forum. Boards is one of the last, enduring strong forums around - given it's a community, not just a business (atleast I hope the new owners see it's true worth).

...since we are what make up the success, failure and content of boards, the more we make of it, the better it can only get (regardless of re-reg or original status, op.) Whining about good old days and complaining about bad new days is futile, when we are the ones solely responsible to contribute what content we wish and/or change directions - up to us.

Wonder would your (or anyones) 12,413 or so posts, have any value to a FMCG marketing conglomerate, when we all live under Skynet in the year 2025?

After all if you get a casual dna test 'just to see what percentage is viking' for the bantz. Your supplied data will be perma-stored, even for possible future resell as a product.

Perhaps in 2025 the AI overlord will decide all the golden-blood Rh-Null (or Negative) folks should be rounded up.

People who have outspoken opinions are more likely to get banned. The reality is that the people who don't get banned are bores who've nothing to say for themselves.

There's a small but very vocal number of posters that are clearly only actively seeking to antagonise for their own agenda, or are just not completely mentally stable. Hard to differentiate between but neither one is worth engaging with as it's at the very least a waste of time and at worst could be exasperating a serious condition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,312 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

Boards rules are a problem. Trolling is too easy. You can troll and very simply defend it as your legitimate position. If you call someone a troll, you're carded, if the thread is reported nothing is done because technically it's not trolling. Right wing trolling just happens to be the easiest at the moment.

There feels like there's been a concerted effort on After Hours to spread an American style alt-right agenda by a seemingly constant stream of brand new accounts over the last year or so.

It's something I don't really ever see reflected in Irish society or even in other Irish online communities like Reddit.

Reddit mods will remove any opinion they don't like as they'll be accused of being yanks.

People get banned for spouting unsubstantiated nonsense and insulting rubbish. Something folks often confuse with being 'outspoken'.

No, and nobody said that about the Gillette ad either.

But it's an implicit recognition that the New Zealand shooter has the same pseudo-intellectual positions and justifications against immigration and multiculturalism that many here on boards do. That makes you uncomfortable when you're not a psychopath, because it indicates that perhaps your own opinion might need re-examining.

But rather reexamine ones own opinions, it's far easier to just call everyone else crazy and stick to your guns.

You might want to look up what irony means (in fairness it is pretty much sarcasm but if we're getting picky...).

There's no real misrepresentation. Try naming somebody as one step away from being a child rapist and see if a defamation case ensues.*

    *spoiler: it will.

It might, it would fail though. But it's still a strawman argument. He said one thing, he's been accused of saying something else. It doesn't matter if what he did say was incorrect, bad or defamatory, it's still something different to what he was accused of saying.

From Collins online dictionary for you (since you seem intent to persist in just being wrong):

Irony is a subtle form of humour which involves saying things that you do not mean.

It's not a strawman argument either (so wrong again). Saying somebody is one step removed from a murderer or terrorist is comparing them to a murderer or terrorist.
