Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Pop up camera sounds annoying. Although, if apple did it, we'd all have them within a couple of years. Think I'd prefer an notch

Call me paranoid but one good thing about a pop up camera is you can be sure it's not spying on you 24/7! I barely use the front camera.

Have the P30 pro since release date and I'm still amazed by how good the battery is. Got used to the size of it pretty quick too as only had 5" screen before.

Anyone disliking their one so far?

No love it. The battery gets recharged every 36-48hours with moderate use

I'd never have gone with Huawei phones, had an upgrade due but no iPhone or Samsung available so seen the P20 pro for €100 so took the chance. Never regretted it so when the P30 pro was out bought it sim free.

I was on holiday and thought I'd miss my slr but was really impressed with the shots I got and the battery l life is unreal love how it's charged in an hour and lasts for 2 days amazing!!

The only thing I can think of that I dislike is the NFC icon always on in the status bar. And that's such a small problem it's non existent really.

Everything else about it is great, the camera and battery are the 2 obvious ones. Being able to use a normal microSD card would be better, but at 128gb it's the first phone I'm not going to bother with expandable memory.

Edit: update the sonos app, Google assistant is available in Ireland

Yeah the NFC symbol and the Optimiser notifications are two minor gripes I have but it's a great phone overall.

Deadly about the Google Assistant going live. Is it easy to switch between that and Alexa?
Still waiting for my Sonos delivery.

When I select some text in an app, I get this screen

    shot2.jpg?dl=1

If I tap the 3 dots, I get this screen

    shot1.jpg?dl=1

When I then tap search, it uses Bing to do the web search.

Some app has changed this on my phone (I think Onedrive). Does anyone know how to change it back to Google?

    Thanks

Looks easy. Sonos settings/voice services gives you this

In the browser apps there is an option in the settings of that app to switch between various ones. Check in there see if that works. I haven't seen an option to change it on a system wide level.

That didnt work...Browser search settings are all set to Google...there must to be a separate setting for this search option

There's a big discussion about this on the sonos sub in reddit. They say that if you change the settings to us, Google assistant should work then.

“Huawei Technologies Co Ltd will immediately lose access to updates to the Android operating system, and the next version of its smartphones outside of China will also lose access to popular applications and services including the Google Play Store and Gmail app,” Reuters noted.

This effectively means no further Android security updates for devices new and old, including the recent P30 and P30 Pro, Mate 20 Pro, and many more.

    Not great news.

I thought this thing stopped US companies dealing with them, so if that's the case then it won't matter if the phone is European or American. It'll definitely hurt them in a big way if this goes ahead, you're talking about a minuscule percentage of users who know how to do the faffy stuff with phones.
I had this phone marked for my next network upgrade but not a hope in hell I'm getting it now.

No, Google are bound but US law and that affect their whole business. No dealing with Huawei anywhere full stop. No further updates for Huawei phones, only open source licences.
Only a small minority of people would be up to installing via other sources etc, and as the phones are quite locked down even rooting at the moment it's not straight forward. Most people want the convenience of Google play store etc.

There's always the OnePlus 7 Pro launching this week here. 90hz screen is a nice bonus.
I don't expect this ban to materialise just willy shaking, china has plenty it could ban from the US in the morning. Enough to make the Dow tremble and as Huawei is private it won't hurt the Chinese markets half as hard.

Will be interesting to see if the carriers in Ireland stop selling Huawei phones now. Also I guess price in 2nd hand market will plummet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,153 ✭✭✭TheIrishGrover

That is potentially HUGE news. I'm sure some deal will be struck though.

It is an interesting situation though. I'm sure this will make a lot of manufacturers nervous and will raise the concern of Google having such a monopoly and basically having manufacturers by the balls. What's the betting that manufacturers will form a group to develop their own open-source OS.

I'm sure people will be making the link (rightly or wrongly) with Google's own renewed interest in the hardware market. People will see this as Google simply trying to phase out competition: Xaoimi will be next. I mean personally I don't believe this. I believe this is as the result of US government pressure.

I believe this will hurt google in the long run more than they know. I mean it's not going anywhere. It's going to remain a massive corporation for a very long time but I can certainly see a future with Apple OS, Android and a new OS on Samsung, Huawei, Sony and Nokia and others.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,339 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

We can't go back to the days of all different OS's, Google is playing with fire here. There will be hundreds of millions of people effected by this. They might as well pack up and hand the whole smartphone market to apple if the follow through with this.

You make it sound as if Google had a choice in this.
They don't...they have to follow the laws of the US..and right now the law says Huawei are off limits. No American company is allowed deal with them.
    Its non-negotiable.

Google have different policies in china as they do in the US .

Explain why this policy has to impact non us countries like the Europeans.

This is American trying to police the world again. Europe is going to have to start growing a pair.

Were you guaranteed updates? The phone still works. Not sure if any comeback.
I don't think this is for real though, they might have bullied ZTE but I don't think Huawei will be buckled as easily.

Google is an American company. Regardless of where it operates it has to follow US law.
Amazon is also in the same boat as it can’t offer Amazon’s App Store to huawei.

It's nothing to do with Europe. If Google don't do anything, the US government will hit them with fines and sanctions. If Google weren't American and did nothing, the US government would ban them from being sold in the US and fan American companies from dealing with them.

"Existing Huawei smartphone users will be able to update apps and push through security fixes, as well as update Google Play services.

But when Google launches the next version of Android later this year, it may not be available on Huawei devices.

Future Huawei devices may no longer have apps such as YouTube and Maps.

Huawei can still use the version of the Android operating system available through an open source licence."

So BBC saying that current Huawei devices will still support Google play and that only upcoming devices will be affected by this. Other news outlets saying all Huawei devices will be affected though.

All devices will be affected, new phones won't have access to Google play services etc, existing phones can't get OS updates as this would alter the existing licence status and invalidate access to play services

Has there been any clarification on 'new'? Like if someone factory reset their Mate 20 tomorrow to fix an issue, will it get past the initial setup where it downloads play services etc?

Factory reset should be ok, and if not, bring it back to retailer as its not functional ;)

Oh I agree. It would be a nightmare scenario but I wouldn't be at all surprised if manufacturers looked into having a "vendor neutral" OS.

I know at one stage we had Apple, Android, Symbian, Windows and others and all but Apple & Android died away.

Microsoft gave Windows phones a hard push but it never really took off but if the big Android phone manufacturers came to an agreement and decided that, say, the next generation of phones starting 01/01/2021 would ALL be this new OS then it would have to succeed simply because developers and users would have no choice.

And who is going to develop, write and maintain this new OS? It's not as straight forward as you made it sound. The big 2 are just too big to compete with.

That's not even the hard part, it's getting developers to fill an app library. This was Androids biggest stumbling block in the early days and took them a long time to get the Play Store anywhere near what Apple could offer.

Oxygen OS is just Android with different visuals in the same way that their own EMUI already is.

Hydrogen OS is the version with no Google Services that OnePlus have.

This doesn't seem to be a problem in the short term, however when Q is released and my new phone is blocked from any update the resell value is going to be seriously impacted.

short term problem is existing phones won't get security updates and deffo no OS updates. As new exploits etc are found in Android they are patched via security patches, as Huawei no longer have access to these patches this will lead to holes in huawei phones that could be exploited.

Hadn't even thought of that. The GT would probably be the only unaffected one as it doesn't have Android.
