Yep went to both Malaga and salou with no issues! Also somehow managed to get a visa and travel to Turkey with this passport?! Going to the passport office tomorrow to check it out. When I asked the French airport police why it hasn’t given me problems enter other countries before and they said other countries don’t have their controls as tight as they do that they input every passport number through their computers and other countries just look at the passports.

Did you ever have an unpaid parking or speeding fine in France.

Would anyone know please how long it is taking recently to get a passport sent to you when you apply online from Ireland? It says eight working days, not including postage, but wondering if this is about right.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 907 ✭✭✭Under His Eye

It normally comes within 2 to 3 days provided there are no problems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,408 ✭✭✭Westernyelp

Usually quicker. I got mine 2 days after application. That was in June

Could someone help me please. Due to fly today but my passport was out of date. Looked at the rapid renewals service but it doesnt open its booking portal until 12.30 on Sunday for a next day appointment. If i get a Monday appointment will I receive my passport that same day? My flight was changed to Tuesday early morning. Thanks.

I’d get onto the passport office and ask for an explanation.

It looks like somehow the passport was flagged on a system as stolen / lost.
Maybe someone somewhere keyed a wrong passport number?

It doesn’t necessarily mean it was done in Ireland or by the Irish passport office but you should definitely follow up to ensure your data is correct.

I would suggest also possibly contacting Simon Coveney’s office and copying in your local TD.

You were lucky you weren’t traveling to the US, as that could have been a lot rougher than simply being put onto a returning flight.

If there’s nothing wrong on the Irish side, follow up with the French embassy in Dublin too.

I wouldn’t let that drop as being erroneously on a database like that for travel can cause all sorts of issues.

France is being very strict on checking passports agains several databases, but it doesn’t mean the data is always 100% reliable.

Lidl or Aldi should start doing holidays, they do food, underwear, power tools.

I was there a couple of weeks ago, well the resort beside it, Los Cristianos. I booked flights and accommodation separately as it was cheaper this way. If you're booking with Ryanair, just remember to purchase Priority Boarding during the initial booking which includes a 10kg bag on board, it's €6 per person each way.

    Plenty of value here too

Lough eske castle, Donegal. 5 star luxury. 2nights, incl breakfast, evening drink, dinner credit, use of leisure facilities, 30% off spa, for two people €329 for both - not per person. Rooms approx 600sq ft.

Any other similar suggestions for a one night stay with dinner etc.

Doesn't seem to be much value out there.

I just booked a room for a meeting I'm attending in Dublin in November - got the room for €50 LESS than the actual hotel site and any other booking site. Brilliant site thanks for the heads up.

Question: Does the passport number remain the same on your new renewed passport? I may have to apply for a new passport because my current one might be lost :(

    New number.

I have stayed in loads of places and rarely write a review. The hotel I've booked in Dublin, €50 cheaper than any other website, is 5 star - I'm only staying there as I have a meeting there the next day so I'm going there because I need to, not because of what someone wrote. I'll let you know what it was like afterwards.

I thought everyone knows to check tripadvisor for reviews?

Buyer beware and all that. Sometimes the best indicator of a property is your own gut feeling going on what one can gleam from the hotels own website. I've found TA review to be extremely varied and often well wide of the mark.

for me most important are the user photos - tells more, than any review.

Anyone used an Irish passport card for entry to the canaries? Any issues? Flying with ryanair next week and not sure if I need to bring the full passport or just the passport card.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 907 ✭✭✭Under His Eye

It is in the EU so no issues in that regard. Ryanair accept Passport Cards. You should have no problems.

Yeah that's the logical answer. Ryanair don't anyways follow logic 😂. I was thinking the same about it being in the EU but the fact that they have special status is throwing me.

Their special status is in relation to customs only.

An appointment at the embassy is required, these can take some time to secure.

    Hi there,

I was wondering if someone could help me with the following query.

I’m planning on moving to Canada in April 2019. I was granted a 2 year working holiday visa last April and the latest I can arrive before it expires on entry is next April.

My current passport expires in May 2020.

My dilemma is that if I go on my current passport that my visa will be limited to May 2020 (passport expiry date).

I have tried to see can I renew my passport now via the website but I’m told I can’t until it is at least within 1 year of the expiration date. Plus it always seems difficult to travel when a passport is within 6 months of expiry when I am over there.

Can I renew my passport now manually or via written application or am I screwed by the timing of both the visa expiration and passport expirations dates.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

I know someone who did that before. And then they actually lost their passport a year later. Which made that renewal a bit more awkward.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 907 ✭✭✭Under His Eye

    Submit a paper application.

No reason is needed to renew at all time if you go with a manual application.

    Hey boardsies

Googling this and I'm getting mixed answers online so asking you good people for another opinion.

If I renew my passport online, does my current one continue to remain active while it's being processed? Or do I run the risk of arriving at an airport to be told its cancelled?

Travel mainly in EU and USA; still a good few months left on it but may as well renew it when I can.

Thanks in advance for any help

    BG

your passport will be cancelled as soon as they start to process the renewal

Hi lads apologies it this has been asked before. I am travelling to Birmingham for the weekend with Ryanair. I would have just brought the normal small carry on wheelie suitcase. I am aware that the regulations around this have changed. However this Indo article suggests that the new regulations although technically have come into play , will not be enforced until the start of December. Does anyone know if I will be able to bring my wheelie suitcase without being charged extra?

    Relevant article here. https://m.independent.ie/life/travel/travel-news/ryanair-passengers-have-two-weeks-to-comply-with-new-baggage-rules-or-face-a-25-fee-37538004.html

    Hi all,

looking for opinions about something that is a long-standing disagreement between myself and my wife.

Our kids are dual citizens - Irish and Japanese (because of my wife). They have passports from both countries.

When they travel from Ireland to Japan for example, I think it is better to use one passport for the whole journey, but my wife thinks it's better to use their Irish passport when they depart Ireland, and then use their Japanese passport when they arrive in Japan.

With my way, one passport will show the departure and entry stamps for the whole journey, while other passport will have no record of it.

With her way, one passport will show them departing Ireland but never arriving anywhere, and the other will show them arriving in Japan, but never having departed from anywhere in the first place.

Is either of these ways considered better than the other, for any reason, or does it not really matter at all?

AFAIK, if you hold dual passports and are travelling to one of the country's that you are a citizen of, you need to use the passport of that country to enter.
I know it's that way for US dual citizens.
i.e if travelling to the US, you must enter and exit on your US passport.
So I'd assume for Japan it would be similar, but I'm sure wiser heads will be along to clarify.

    Leave Ireland using Irish passport.
Arrive in Japan using Japanese passport.
    Depart Japan using Japanese passport.
Arrive in Ireland using Irish passport.

    Or am I missing something?

Nope, that's the way most countries demand you do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,606 ✭✭✭schemingbohemia

Your passport isn't stamped on the way out so no issue there. I don't think there's API for Japan so no need to refer to Irish passports at all. Use Irish passport on arrival in Dublin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,419 ✭✭✭antix80

Op, the problem with your way is Japanese immigration will see an Irish passport and proceed to issue a Visa (or some similar visa waiver program for Irish citizens).
The process I outlined above is only for the immigration authorities. Dealing with airlines is a different story. They'd probably prefer to see the foreign passport when departing Ireland as their duty is to ensure you'll be in the foreign country legally.. But as you have both passports it shouldn't be an issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,779 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

Ok, so I will have to do the unthinkable and admit to my wife that she is right?:pac:

I didn't know about such a rule, or best practice. I don't actually think she did either, she just preferred it that way.

But it does make sense alright.

I just wondered whether airport authorities ever had a problem with somebody arriving on a Japanese passort (or Irish), with no record of where/when they left, or ever having arrived there in the first place.

Yeah, I know this, and have no problem with them using a Japanese passport from start to finish, when it's easier to do so.

For the last 26 years my brother who lives in Switzerland but works in Italy has used his Irish (E.U.) passport when entering Italy but his Swiss passport when entering Switzerland.
He says it saves a lot of hassle (particularly at the Italian border) as if he uses just one then he is guaranteed to be stopped and form filling happens whereas his way he just needs to wave the relevant passport and rarely is he stopped for just a quick check.

On the few occasions I have made the journey (possessing only an Irish passport) with him I have been grand at the Italian side but stopped by the Swiss for just a few minor questions.
