For Ireland to UK travel, is it simply a visual inspection of the passport or do they scan it?
If it's a visual inspection, then you've nothing to lose by taking a chance.
I wouldn't try checking in any bags as that's likely to involve a passport scan.

Make sure you don't attract any attention to yourself by having large carry on baggage.
Have your passport open to make it easy for them to check.
Smile and make strong eye contact.
Keep your body language as if you expect to get past, not that you expect to be turned back.
Don't be the last in the queue but be near the end and hope that the staff's attention will already be drifting towards closing off the flight and not be as attentive to the passport details.

This is exactly what i was thinking. Thanks man. I think they just glance at it from previous trips.

You have to fill in the expiry date of your passport when checking in. You left it very late to renew, even online is saying 10 working days and this is working day 7??

The last time I took a Ryanair flight they didn't even look at my passport. I was the second or third last to board and they seemed to be in a hurry to close the gate.

You can spoof the expiry date. Ryanair's computer cannot validate the passport data entered.

The most they are checking is that the name matches the boarding card.

So might have to do this. Put it down a year later and hope for the best

It's worth a try I think. What time is your flight at? Your passport might arrive in the post tomorrow.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭Credit Checker Moose

Nope. Just go online and apply for a new one.

    Hey everybody.

Disaster. Yesterday was a cruel rollercoaster of momentary highs and ultimatly crushing lows. The passport hadnt arrived by the morning so i decided to head to the office on Mount St. No dice, total confusion. Turns out a friend of mine from colleges Mam works in the Balbriggan printing office. Outrageous twist of luck. After a long wait pacing around without an answer where i hopped on a bus to Balbriggan i was informed by my friend that it was in Mount St!

Hopped off the bus, got a taxi back to Mount St only to be met with more confusion. Whilst waiting it out with a pint around the corner a text then informed me that it had been sent in the morning. Maybe its in my local sorting office i thought. Another taxi up to Rathmines where my quest came to a smothering halt. They had no idea where it could be and it probably wasnt there and jaysus i had the same issue 20 years ago and its desperate and id like to go back to my Joe Duffy and Tayto now.

I ceded defeat and drowned my sorrows in fine wines and a steak dinner.

    Ugly scenes this morning...

Furthermore, thank you all for your advice and care. Sadly i chickened out of heading to the airport but i felt running around the city like an idiot was a more productive waste of time.

See you guys in 10 years.

Hey - question. Hopefully someone can help or advise.

My 10 year passport is due to expire in Sept 2019. (6 months~). I know most countries require it to be at least 6 months in date before travelling.

I'm happy to renew it early as the chip in the passport doesn't really work & I can't use any of the e-gates which is a pain.

However, before Christmas, I added a new visa to it (Saudi) which will expire in May.

If I renew my passport, will that "impact my visa" or would I need to apply for a new visa for the new passport number? I'm going to have to renew my Saudi one as well soon, just in a bit of a tangle with expiry dates!

Or - is it fine to carry the new passport and then show the visa in the old passport?

    Appreciate any advice!

Hi all, just a quick one. Wife sent off her passport renewal last week, and they have attempted to deliver it the renewal offices in Balbriggan 3 times (all after 5pm). It has been “attempted delivery” each time, as I assume the offices close. Any ideas on what I can do? My assumption is this is an An Post issue, as they are only trying to delivery after the offices are closed.

They do not accept postal applications.

The only accepted methods are In Person, Passport Express, or online.

What? Passport express is sent via An Post, as above....

It was renewed online and need to send in old passport and marriage cert, so sent in via post as above. Passport express label provided by passport office to stick on an envelope and post.

Then it is an post issue.

So, the Passport Office supplied you with a label, but did you just put the envelope in a post box, or did you hand it over the counter at the post office? I would assume you'd have to do the latter, but I could be wrong

Just put it in the letterbox. Says that's perfectly fine to do, once it goes through the an post network. Anyway, seems this isn't passport related but an post related, so I'll take it up with them! Thanks for the replies

I did my sons online application a few weeks back and it’s the same, need s document signed off they supply the bit to stick on the envelope (postage paid) and you just stick it in the letter box.

My passport expired yesterday, do i need to send the expired passport along with application form for a new passport?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭Credit Checker Moose

Do it online. We are in the 21st century now.

Do it online you won’t need to send in the old one, if your not great with uploading photos etc most Tesco have a photo machine that is linked to the passport office, it takes the pic prints out a code and when your doing the online bit you put in the code and your pic pops up. It’s very easy and you should have your new passport in about a week (I got mine in 24hrs last year).

Im due to fly with both Ryanair and Aer Lingus within EU soon but between the time of booking flights I've had to replace my passport. I got both the book and card. I take it there is no issue with either airline accepting the card nowadays when checking in?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭Credit Checker Moose

    Nope.

I think Aer Lingus make you check in at the airport with the card as their online system will not accept it. Ryanair accept it online with no issues.

the card is great but it doesnt yet work on the aotomatic gates at Dublin airport when arriving and doesnt and will likely never work on any automatic passport checks abroad - so having the book passport tucked in your bag somewhere might still be useful to skip queues at immigration and use the machines.

Aer Lingus never ask for passport details unless the destination requires them, so Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic all require API

Passport expires in October 2019 however I have quite a lot of foreign trips between now and then. My question is are there any issues travelling on current valid password while the renewal is in progress? I do not want to be checking in at a foreign airport on way home and finding out the password I have on hand is expired as the new one has been issued?

    Any ideas?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭Credit Checker Moose

Your current passport becomes invalid the moment you apply online for the new one.

Just apply online now and get it in 48 hours, no panic.

thank you. I will apply as soon as I get back from this next trip and hopefully will have new password before the next one. Their site says you need to plan on upto six weeks which I cannot do.

I have been told by the Passport Office that the passport is marked invalid not the moment you apply, but towards the end of the process, when the new passport is issued.
If that happens while you're away, it may present some difficulties returning.

Ok so when a new passport is issued it automatically cancels the old passport. So I would bare this in mind, this happens at the end of the process

Applied today for a passport online today, didn't realize it was out of date and travelling on Thursday. Got a horrible person on the phone who said 'you shouldnt of done that' blah blah blah anyway, rang back and got a lovely man who told me to book an appointment for tomorrow to get an express passport and i just was wondering if anyone have any luck with and express?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,596 ✭✭✭✭josip

Yes. My wife used that to get sorted for a replacement passport in between back to back work trips.
Once you talk to a proper human in the Passport office they will do everything they can to get you sorted.
They understand that not everyone's situation fits into black and white rules.
Also, their online tracker is excellent.

you mean the tracker that says the passport is in status "printing", not yet dispatched, when the door bell rings and its the postman with the passport.

em, yea, great accurate service that.

Mine says printing since Friday, applied in late February but had to reupload a photo, do you get a tracking number for the actual package once it's in an posts control? Need mine for Thursday

    Hi all,

I booked a flight to Amsterdam - a one week trip. Fly back on the 4th May.

My passport expires the 5th May.

Is it still ok to travel with? Ive a lot of out goings at the moment (house building), and had planned to renew in May (I dont have to travel anywhere in case of emergency or anything).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,268 ✭✭✭✭uck51js9zml2yt
