Clicked on this by almost by accident. It's a survey of driver attitudes and behaviours run by insurance company AIG. Here's a bit about interacting with two wheeled vehicles that I am stuck on. In particular question 4 and 7 demand an answer but the choices only really point you in one direction...

1 What is your opinion on motor cyclists?
    (choose one)

I welcome them once they follow the rules
    I don't mind them
    I am cautious of them
    I believe they are dangerous

2 Which of the following best describes your attitude to cyclists:
    (choose one)

I welcome them once they follow the rules
    I don't mind them
    I am cautious of them
    I believe they are dangerous

3 What is the best thing about sharing the road with cyclists:
    (choose one)

    Reduces car traffic
    Encourages people to be healthy
    Good for the environment

4 What's the worst thing about sharing the road with cyclists as a driver?
    (choose one)
    Please select an answer.

    They take over the road
They don't follow the rules of the road
    They break red lights
    They are not visible enough
    They have no accountability

    5 Have you ever:
    (choose one)

Had an accident with a cyclist?
Had a near miss with a cyclist?
Had an argument with a cyclist?
    None of the above

6 Do you think there should be:
    (choose one)

    More on road cycle lanes
    More off road cycle lanes
We have the right amount of cycle lanes
    Less off road cycle lanes
    Less on road cycle lanes

7 Do you think cyclists who commute should have to complete the following:
    (select as many as appropriate)
    Please select an answer.

    Pass a test
    Have basic insurance cover
Have a registration so they can be reported
    Hold a licence

    Got an email from AIG

interesting that there's no explicit 'none of the above' on the last question.
you could mail them back and ask them what is the intended purpose of the information they're gathering.

also, you could forward the email to the various cycling campaign groups for them to query with AIG?

Yeah, I think that could be a good first step.

Should be quite a few "none of the above", or "I totally disagree with the nature and implications of this question"

    Question 7 shows their intent.

7 Do you think cyclists who commute should have to complete the following:
    (select as many as appropriate)
    Please select an answer.

    Have basic insurance cover

Insurance company pushes for extra mandatory insurance.

    Looking back, the email states
"Your views will help us focus on key safety initiatives to make our towns and communities safer."

there is another section about making telematics (sp?) mandatory by 2022. I've already got Strava!

The survey (with some tweaking) works too for cyclists surveyed about car users!

1 What is your opinion on car users?
    (choose one)

I welcome them once they follow the rules
    I don't mind them
    I am cautious of them
    I believe they are dangerous

    I don't mind them
    I am cautious of them
    I believe they are dangerous

3 What is the worst thing about sharing the road with more car users:
    (choose one)

    More car traffic
Less likely for people to be healthy
    Bad for the environment

4 What's the worst thing about sharing the road with car users as a cyclist?

    Question 8.
    Have you ever.

Sat in a car stuck in traffic and fuming while going to a job you hate, wasting money on petrol and been over weight
and then a cyclist breezes past you looking happy and healthy.

    Answer, every ****ing day.

I posted this on Twitter last night with the OP's permission. Dublin Cycling Campaign have retweeted it at AIG so let's see what if anything they come back with...

It reads like something that teams on the last few years of the apprentice would have produced, only to get ripped a new one by Alan Sugar.

I feel like they're trying to get honest answers from motorists typical attitude towards cyclists being in the way etc. Not sure what they'd do with that information though...

This is push-polling basically. They're not looking for feedback. They're trying to get certain ideas out there.

Exactly. They are leading questions with an agenda behind them. After this there will be a lobby for insurance on cyclists ridiculous as that is.

"I'm looking for suggestions for a bike for a newly qualified cyclist. They're probably only going to be able to afford third party, fire, and theft insurance, but maybe it would be worth getting the fully comprehensive as it will come with open cycle so that they could cycle other bikes if necessary. They would like something sporty though. Do you think they could sneak on a bigger chainring and keep it "off the books" so to speak?" -

...is a conversation I hope I'll *never* have to engage in!

On the other hand AIG could be gathering data to see driver behavior on the road to determine their aggressiveness as a way to increase insurance premiums.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,245 ✭✭✭check_six

Would you rate your driving as:
    a) Careless
    b) Inconsiderate
    c) Aggressive
    d) All of the above

Please choose one of the above for a chance to win a lollipop (and a guaranteed surprise come renewal day)

Or alternatively they could start to offer motor policy discounts to motorists who are also cyclists ;) Would be something else for the anti-cyclist ranters to give themselves coronaries over.

I saw this at the time and sent an email to Minister Ross asking if he had any plans to introduce licensing, mandatory insurance, pass a test or be registered, and his private secretary has replied confirming that as a bike is not a mechanically propelled vehicle he has no plans to do so.

Well, thank goodness that the person doing the actual transport minister duties has a good understanding of the road traffic act.

Ross's vague level of understanding is always a bit alarming.

He's mostly very bored by the brief he ended up with, I think.
