Was looking at the penalty point table and noticed that there's no penalty points issued for driving without tax. Thought this was a bit strange as there is penalty points issued for less severe offences. Can anybody shed any light on the reason and what are the penalties for driving without tax?

Tax has nothing to do with road safety.

Tax is a finance offence which attracts a fine for non display of same oor seizure if out of date past a certain period. Penalty periods are a safety initiative to change behaviour.

You can be fined for not displaying a valid tax disc, and if the tax is out over two months, your car is liable to be impounded until the arrears are paid.

Tax doesn't correspond to road safety, it's a revenue matter.

it's just a tax and the Gards shouldn't be tasked with enforcing it imo

This tax shouldn't exist in the first place.
    No need for it.

What are the less severe offences the op mentions? Because I can't think of any.

Road tax doesn't directly affect any other road users at the time of the offence.

Penalty points are to discipline drivers who in theory cause a danger on the road. Taxed or not...

This ^^^ tax isn't a safety issue, nct and insurance are!

How many days grace do you get though? If your tax disc expires on the last day of March, could you get a fine on 3rd of April? Just curious?

No grace. You can get two in two days parked outside your house, too ;)

Sure most will not fine you for few days anyway but legally can.

How is insurance a safety issue?

I agree with NCT being one, but can't see any link between insurance and safety.

Stop thinking solely about yourself for a change.

There isn't any link and like motor tax not having insurance should not be a penalty point offence.

If someone is detected without insurance they normally will get a two year disqualification anyway

Because your vehicle is a danger to every other road user if it's not insured.

But you can't (legally) tax your car if it's not insured

Driving without tax is a revenue issue, not a safety one. It's more of a money issue than anything else.

Driving without sex is a revenue issue, not a safety one. It's more of a money issue than anything else.

I'll make sure to get a BJ the next time I'm on the motorway

Your insurance can expire while the tax is still valid.

It can but to renew your tax you need an insurance policy number etc. Doesnt have to be real though as it's not verified.
