What is the most pain you've ever endured?

I have a longstanding sports injury that auses the tendons in my knee to slip out of place and cause a lockjaw like effect.

Still has nothing on the time I got such a bad sinus infection that it somehow brought on the most intense migraine I have ever had. I couldn't so much as close my mouth or open my right eye for 3 days (over which I got maybe 20-25 mins sleep in total). I was apparently a bit delirious for most of it.

Used to work with a guy who had trangeminal myopia who would get similar all the time. I'm not joking, if my 3 days were anything to go by, I might well consider suicide in his shoes.

Three most painful experiences have been...

3. Ligaments in my ankle, got hit in a bad tackle playing football and out me out for a few weeks, wasn't right for about 3 months...

2. Appendicitis had to be rushed to hospital for an emergency op.

1. A herniated disc in my back between S5 and L1, happened a year ago and couldn't get put of bed for two weeks, to this day I still suffer from it.

I get very very bad muscle spasms in my calf's from time to time. You can see the muscle twist and spasm. Might only last about 10 mins but no matter what position I put it, standing, lying or sitting, its the same. I've broken bones and have had horrid dental pain but nothing close to those spasms and the after pain to follow for the next few days after.

I only happens rarely but it can be embarrassing if it happens outside of home. I feel like roaring in pain and if I put weight on it I will roar.

Major dental surgery about 8 months ago, I was awake during the procedure just numbed and sedated. Dosed up on pain meds going home and given a prescription too for strong pain killers. I was ok that evening of the procedure but woke the follow morning feeling like my gob had been attacked by a kanggo hammer, ****ing dreadful pain.

Physically? I got a virus in the joints of my ribs and it was the worst pain I've ever had. Couldn't eat or anything. This is coming from a guy that has broken bones, had minor surgery without painkillers and mumps.

Emotionally? Still working on that one. Seems my life has fallen apart over the past year.

Internal rupture & bleeding is a bit unpleasant. If I knew that was going to haappen I'd take off up a mountain and wait it out in peace .

A few thoughts on pain

It's one thing if people can see a problem but that's invisible .

Someone told me red haired people ''need more painkillers and anaesthetic'' .

IMO A large man making pain noises is going to be taken more seriously, faster than a small woman doing the same.

And finally , they should give people something to bite down on in ambulances (if they can't /won't use pain relief ). Sounds strange and primitive but try it if you're in pain.

And breath out with the pain, not deep breaths in. Apparently everyone will think you're having an orgasm but if you care about that there's probably nothing wrong with you.

Probably when I suffered 7 facial fractures, one in each arm, one in the neck and one in the back. The good news is I was heavily concussed and cannot remember it.

Did suffer a compound fracture of the leg - 3 places, when I was 5. Remember I cried that day, so it must have hurt

I remember an ear infection I had as a kid where the pain was as direct to the brain as it could be.
My mother gave me heavy duty back pain prescription tablets that night, brufen I think, but didn't even take the edge off. That was one long night.

Also gout is pretty painful but mercifully only got it twice, self inflicted with too much red wine.

I had Uveitis that was misstreated by a GP and had to eventually go to eye casualty. She said it was the worst case of it she had seen in twenty something years and she gets a case maybe every week.

Anyway, had to get a series on injections directly into my eye ball. Getting the injection itself was awful on a scale of 1-10 10 being passing out from pain it was I dunno an 8 but it was only a minute at a time.

What followed was hours of pressure (from the steroids I injected) that was a constant 7 out of 10 was the worst time of my life. By the end I would have seriously considered losing the eye to make the pain stop.

Inflamed lining of the stomach was severe, made me piss sweat it was so bad, had to concentrate not to pass out.

Had an ingrown toenail operated on and the anesthetic didn't take. That was severe!

I found fighting the pain didn't work, had to wrap it around me like a blanket.

Put my arm through a plate glass window once, needed 30 stitches in four different places on my arm. Couldn't write for about 4 weeks, and even then it was agony.

Tore the ankle ligaments and damaged my Achilles in my right ankle in a drunken fall once too. Walked home on it bizarrely but the next day I wasn't able to even get out of bed because of the pain.

Most recently damaged nerves in one of my teeth. That was rolling about on the floor, wishing to die sort of pain.

I've broken my toes and part of my jaw and honestly, it wasn't that bad, I tore ligaments in my ankle and that hurt a lot worse. I was also shot in one of my eyes and it wasn't that bad, had quite a severe bleed as a result but luckily never lost my vision, just uveitis and nerd glasses

Worst pain by far has to be period pain. I've had all sorts of injuries, infections and illnesses, and none of them come close to it, makes me projectile vomit and pass out every single month. I'm just waiting for a hysterectomy.

Had a collapsed lung so had to get a tube inserted into my chest through my side, basically without a proper anesthetic.

The tube they used was bigger than needed too.

Not my best day.

Quite sick during pregnancy and was hospitalised at 6 months until baby was born.

This particular day I was apparently heading for a stroke and so an emergency c section was ordered as we had under 30 mins to get baby out before I would have a stroke.

Get to theatre. Epidural given but wasn't working as I could still lift my legs. After some heavier top ups of it, I finally wasn't able to move so was good to go....until I was sliced open and felt every. Single. Bit. Of. It. The pain was excruitiating and I was put asleep under General aesthetic. Woke up 5 hours later to a healthy bambino.

Weird kidney illness that never fully diagnosed and dissapeared as suddenly as it started (after 18 months of recurring attacks).

Couple of hours of back ache/discomfort then escalation to excruciating pain that felt like it consumed entire body. Got smart enough to be in bed with serious prescription pain relief as soon as discomfort started, but first attack saw me collapse, vomit, loose consciousness. Was hospitalised from a few attacks as they could last between seconds to several hours at high pain level. Never did get to bottom of it, but 12 years since last attack.

As a child picking up a horseshoe just after it had been dipped into the bucket of water so it had gone back to looking normal(cooled down) and not white hot as I thought as it looked cold again.
Oh **** me the pain and the blisters were fcuking cat painful for weeks after.
Fractured c5 vertebrae and with it tore shoulder ligaments and nerve damage for good measure,12 months of agony as a chap had to sleep on the floor for six months.Pay attention at manual handling class people.
A split cornea was also painful more annoying than anything else bit of plastic hit me in the eye.

Gallbladder attacks. Writhing on the floor in agony for hours trying to find a bit of relief.
And driving with a broken wrist. Was agony changing gear. I thought my wrist was just sprained.

I had a stroke when I was in the mid 20's.
Woke up in pain, shuffled to the bathroom, collapsed to my knees, puked and fell over from the pain.
House mates had to call an ambulance.

Literally felt like my head was trying to explode, because it was.

Neurologist recokened if I hadn't got anti-coagulants as quickly as I did I probably would have had a massive aneurysm.


Recovered fully within 18 months, thank ****.

Fell twice while having a piss due to the pain after it was removed - Razorblades wouldnt have been as bad. I refused to piss for the 1st day after and they did an ultrasound and saw the bladder full of blood/piss/horror - They told me if I didnt empty theyd have to put the catheter back in. Talk about motivation!

As above literally shaking with fear standing at the toilet!

Ive had 12 stones over the last 14 yrs - but that was by far the worst ever experienced

When I went to a and e with the pain, I thought my back was ****ed... I had a herniated disc L5S1 , I thought the disc had collapsed completely,... the pain was unbearable... I could just about shuffle, not walk ... had a X-ray, I knew the radiographer, she was a friend of my wife’s, she told me I had a huge kidney stone.... went back to the registrar, non Irish( not a reason) he looked at the scan and said

“ ... as we suspected, you have a pulled muscle “

Could’nt say ... you ****wit I’ve a kidney stone the size of a mellon, as I would’ve gotten the radiographer in trouble... went back to my GP and she got me an emergency appointment in private hospital with urologist.

Had a few - one was when I was a youngster and I ended up putting an elbow through a window, which opened up my arm enough that I could look right into it. I was only maybe 12 at the time but I realised straight away that there was soon going to be a lot of blood, so while I could still see what I was doing I took great care removing a number of pieces of glass from right beside a fairly important-looking vein. Before I could get patched up, I had to get several anaesthetic injections directly into the wounds. Short-lived but very intense.

I also came off my bicycle as a teenager and broke my collarbone. Lay unconscious in the street for probably less than a minute, but just as I was waking up two "helpful" passersby decided to lift me over to the pavement - by taking hold of my wrists and hauling me up, making the two broken ends twist/grind/dig against each other and into me. Glad I didn't have any spinal fracture!

As an adult, I once tore the surface of my cornea - had to essentially be blind for a week because even with an eyepatch sealing the eye closed, the slightest movement of my healthy eye to look at anything caused the bad one to move as well, which reopened the tear each time.

Some years back I got on a plane unaware that I had a crack in a filling, which it turned out had allowed a tiny amount of air to be trapped inside my tooth. When the cabin pressurised, the pain was so bad I wanted to rip the side of my head off. Swilling whisky around it for the entire duration of the flight took a very slight edge off it, but made no more difference than that. Two hours of absolute agony - thankfully the flight wasn't any longer than that and the pain completely disappeared after I was off the plane.

But probably worse than any of that was an accident about 10 years ago which resulted in the nails being partly ripped out of both my big toes. They were both still kind of attached to me, so in A&E the doctor managed to reinsert both of them (with a fine-sounding squelch and a spurt of blood that went a fair way towards the ceiling). However he explained that in order to prevent the ongoing haemorrhaging building up pressure underneath the nails and eh, bursting them off again, he would have to burn a small hole through the middle of each one in order to allow the blood to escape. The anaesthetic had to be injected into the lower knuckle of the toe, just where it joins the foot - the amount of stuff he injected made the skin around the lower part of the toe swell up like a balloon, then he had to squeeze and push it up towards the top with a lot of pressure so it wouldn't escape into the rest of the foot.
Once that was done, he produced this thing that looked just like a pen - clicked the end of it and within about one second the tip was glowing red with the heat. He used that to burn a hole through the newly reinserted toenail on my right foot, which only took about three seconds. Then he said "right, we'll get this other one done now" and did the same on the other side ... before I had the chance to remind him he hadn't anaesthetised that one yet.
To add insult to injury, just at that moment a couple of medics walked past the little side room where all this was taking place and one wearily said to the other, in the same sort of tone one might use to discuss being stuck in the same bad traffic jam every morning, "God, I hate the smell of burning flesh."
Fun times.

My own worse pain was having a chest infection and broken ribs at the same time.

Not fun. I am allergic to Ibuprofen also.. All done without pain killers.

Yeah they didn't give any medication until they had the results of an MRI to confirm a clot and then they were straight in and hooked me up a to heprin pump.

Getting my full blown migraines. I had a few injuries and gave birth but I dread these headaches so much, I have no words. I literally want to die. It feels like my head explodes, I go blind on one eye, I throw up and I'd love to recreate the scene from Pi where he drills into his own head.
One day later and the world is fine but when it's here it feels like I'm passing out from the pain and I'm questioning if I'm still conscious.

Torn nerve in my shoulder after i had my second baby. Never experienced pain like it and then throw caring for a newborn baby in just for good measure.

Nerve pain is different. It really fúcks with your head.
