Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Towing a car trailer

    Hi guys,

So I'm actually lost here. The laws for the B licence and towing are confusing me.
It's says that I can town a trailer of 750 kg or less or tow a trailer that doesn't exceed the 3.5 tonnes.

So here's my story, I have a car that weight's around 1.5T, maybe less not sure, I need to tow a trailer with a car. The trailer weights 800 kg and car 1.2T so quick maths 3.5T on the spot. So I'm thinking, will I be able to tow it legally or I'm breaking the law?

    I have full B licence.

    So.
You can tow a trailer where the designed max weight of car and trailer combined is no more than 3500kg.

It’s not about the actual weight but the maximum designed weight. You can’t have a small load on a large trailer and be ok.

Your car will have a maximum weight as per the licence certificate.
Add to that the maximum weight the trailer is designed to be. This is where it gets a bit grey as loads of older trailers have no weight stamp.

From the info you are giving the trailer is 50kg too heavy.

    That’s not correct
It is allowed to tow a trailer over 750kg as long as the combined mam of both car and trailer done exceed 3500kg.

Mam is maximum authorised mass, maximum designed weight.

A quick google tells me if you cut off the back axle of the trailer you should be good to go.

    Quick trip to the car:
    Gross vehicle weight: 1970 KG
    Gross train weight: 3270KG

so by my understanding if I'm calculating it right, I can tow 1,300 KG. So technically I'm good?

So you can tow a trailer where the designed max weight of the trailer is 1500kg but you can’t go above the max train weight so yes, trailer and load can’t exceed 1300kg

    What sort of trailer ?

A typical car trailer, where you can tow a car on it.
I've checked quickly and it looks like that car I need to tow is 1.4T so its already after my max train weight. I've presume I can't go and tow it.

    Ok.
You won’t be able to legally use a car transporter with a regular B licence.
Sorry, it was only on te readong your first post that I realise that was your plan.

The 750KG limit is for trailers without brakes. Any trailer heavier than that must have an independent braking system.
