Just ordered the connecting hose, so I'll be able to bypass the cannisters completely and just use the 5 litre tank directly. I have 2 of them so when one runs out I'll have a full one on hand.

I think these are the replacement ones here. It says : Compatible with Drinkmate, Aarke, SodaStream, and other soda maker machines that accept standard threaded cylinders. *Not compatible with 'quick connect' machines*

ah yeah then they are grand if they are the threaded ones.

I got my machine from MySoda and they are using the "old style" easily refillable cylinders, I wonder are the new styles ones SodaStream specific

Generally the threaded 60L CO2 cylinders are compatible amongst the main brands like Sodastream & Aarke.

These replacement Drinkmate cylinders on Amazon would suggest they are - see link below.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Drinkmate-60L-CO2-Cylinders-14-5oz/dp/B08KTW814L?th=1

What you wont be able to confirm probably is if the valves at the top of the cylinder are suitable for home-filling (eg The newer Sodastream bottles have an anti-refill valve). These valves are simple to replace and can be bought off the likes of Amazon or Aliexpress cheap enough for between around a tenner.

@Confused11811 had a great post on this a couple of years back.

    Got this delivered

    https://www.co2supermarket.co.uk/sodastream-connection-hose-p532.html

Seems to be the correct part, and I'll set it up later to test, then need to find somewhere to keep the 5l tank indoors and out of the way, with the machine attached

Personally I dont keep my 5L indoors. It contains a hell of a lot of CO2 and if any part of the connection were to fail, it will flood the room with CO2 gas. But even a slow leak can be dangerous if your room is not well ventilated. I like what your doing, but make sure your confident in the reliability of your system and have minimised the risks. Just google hypercapnia & hypoxia!

That's good advice, the room I'm hoping to put it in is fairly well ventilated as it has the washing machine and tumble dryer - I also know plenty of people through the homebrew world who keep their co2 tanks indoors too, so I'm not overly concerned with this. Definitely a concern though, and worth thinking about.

Is that all you need, along with the tank from AJ Edge?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,383 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

    yeah, I think so

Just bought a CO2 tanks from AJ Edge the other day. Super easy to refill using "Quick Connect adapter" (This is the one I used for reference https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CCCXFRFX?psc=1 ). I got it up to around 1050grams from around 745. Hopefully do better the next time! Super easy was really surprised how easy it was. Had visions of things going boom 😂 . I froze the gas bottle in freezer overnight

I was doing with great results until recently but cannot get the bottles refilled beyond a few seconds anymore, so just around 835grams weight whereas before I was getting around 1100.

I even got the big tank refilled in AJ Edge again as I thought that might have been nearly empty but no difference. Is it possible the auto blocking head in the cylinder is sticking quicker? Anywhere I can buy the easy filling ones from to replace these ones?

Ive seen videos of people replacing the new valves with the old style valves, cant find it right now. It does require a vice grips though as far as i remember.

I ordered this from Amazon during the summer, but couldn't get the old valve off the bottle. I only tried once and didn't bother with it after that! I'll try again sometime when I have a strap wrench 😁

I just put the sodastream bottles for an hour in the freezer - an almost empty cylinder will cool very quickly.

But I do bring my red bottle in from the shed overnight to get that warmed up to room temp.

The bigger the delta between the temp of each bottle, the more effective it will be at delivery.

    That's what I do too.

Any know of other co2 suppliers near Louth?

It's a long trip to Bray just for one tank. I think next time I go I will be getting two tanks.

Have you tried searching for fire extinguisher refill services around locally or in Newry? I would be looking for smaller businesses as they may be more open to doing this. Just need pure CO2 refill with no additives.

I'll try that thanks, i also keep mine in the shed which is of course freezing at this time of year.

hi there looking for some advice. Managed to get CO2 cannister from AJ Edge in Bray. had bought this adapter on Amazon

However it appears the adapter wont screw onto the cannister. I presume i need another adapter - was only going to wreck thread if tried to put on. it seems similar size. anyone any suggestions - i don't think i can return it now as scraped etc from using spanner to tighten it and i bought it months ago - took me a while to get CO2 cannister from Bray.

I think European is w21.8 and the one i received presumably from the USA is CGA320 - so therefore need adapter that converts if possible but wanted to confirm if anyone else had experience with same.

The AJ Edge tanks use a W21.8-14 thread which is standard in UK. From the description of your adapter it says it is for USA standard gas bottles only.

I use this adapter with the AJ Edge bottle and it works fine.

does that adapter work with the Terra Pink bottles???

I use it with the standard Sodastream bottles with both the new and old style valves … is this what you mean by the pink bottles? I think i have both blue and pink here … the threads on the valve is same on both

The pink ones are quick connect that click in rather than screw in I think so not the same. There are new and old style screw in ones (the new ones have the "safety" valve that makes refilling them at home difficult).

Managed to get Adapter on Amazon to change American thread to W21.8 European thread. Bit of plumbers tape and have sealed system now. Only issue is that i can only seem to get Co2 in cannister to 900g with freezing. Doesn't want to go beyond that. No major issue other than having to refill more frequently. Still saving a fortune ..

If the small gas bottle is freezing, is the big cylinder at room temperature?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭topdecko

well its at room temp in the shed which these days is Baltic, will be no way to cool it other than that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 540 ✭✭✭MickH503

Maybe leave it inside overnight before using? That should help get more than 900g fills

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,856 ✭✭✭wassie

This your issue. As mentioned before, its not the temp of your cylinder, its the difference between the cylinder & bottle.

If your cylinder is only a few degrees below zero and your bottles only a few above, then you may only have a 10C delta. Keep the bottle in the utility room over night and you may get the bottle to 15C-18C. Your delta then is going to be more like 20C

TLDR: Raising the temperature, and therefore the pressure, in the donor cylinder will help to transfer more CO2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,383 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

I've also found that just leaving the small cylinder attached to the donor one for a half hour or so, after you can't hear the initial transfer happening, will allow a larger refill, as there is still a trickle happening from one to the other. Just needs some patience.

Is there anyone in County Kilkenny selling Sodastream syrup?

I need 7-Up Light for adding to cheap sparkling water. Fine for my needs.

A homemade effort at Rock Shandy on my part that is IMHO, better than fanta's effort but still nowhere near Club's peak 😉 Let's be honest like, Club rock shandy is a good tier soft drink.

Anyway, a simple and very cheap recipe that allows a lot of drinks for half the price of a sodastream syrup.

Tesco's quad strength cordials 1 Orange, 1 lemon, mixed at a 2:1 ratio. You could buy 2 1.5ltr bottles of orange and 1 1.5ltr bottle of lemon, yielding 4.5ltrs of cordial for less than 1 440ml of Sodastream syrup.

The ratio can be tweaked to personal preferences as can the amount added to your carbonated water. This is IMO a very decent substitute for Club and is great value for money too.
