    Just looking for opinions on what its like to live in Carlow. Are there any estates/areas to avoid? Does anyone live in Carlow and commute to Dublin and how do you find the travel options?

    I live in Carlow and commute to Dublin. When the three-lane M7 upgrade opens, it'll improve journey times and hopefully lead to less crashes. I've never taken the train but it's a single-track to Kildare station, rather than double-track, so it won't be as frequent or reliable as the Limerick service.

    The town itself is ok. It suffers from the same problems as other towns - boarded up shops and out of town retail parks. It's not the worst place, but it's not going to be on a lot of peoples shortlists for a weekend away. It has a working class profile so not a massive amount of disposable income on display, but it's still a busy town on a Saturday afternoon. There's a decent selection of restaurants, but the pubs are dated and the hotels nothing special. IMO there aren't as many out-and-out gurriers as towns like Portlaoise and Newbridge.

    It's a college town - two third level colleges in fact. There's Knockbeg college if you're a pushy parent...
    It has everything you need really - shops, pubs, restaurants, schools, a theater, cinemas, kids entertainment, go karting, bowling etc etc. It's a good town for sport - there's a rugby club, a county GAA stadium, cricket club, tennis/badminton club, a rowing club, snooker/pool hall, gyms, swimming pools, golf etc. For walking, it's not great, the barrow tow path is a lovely amenity totally neglected and held back by nimby's. There's no hospital, which is Carlows biggest disadvantage. Housing is well priced for a town that's in the Dublin commuter belt, but you'd want to avoid certain estates with lots of students. The Dublin side of the town commands higher house prices. Traffic through the town is busy, but nothing compared to similar sized towns like Naas and Newbridge. There's three motorway exits, which helps to get in/out quickly. Newbridge has only one!

    Carlow is a decent town, nothing spectacular. Most towns in Ireland aren't spectacular though.

    In terms of the best areas to live in the town - Oak Park, Green Lane, Athy Road would be sought after. The Castlecomer road seems nice too.
