Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

UK licence post-Brexit?

Will it be possible to change a UK driving license to an Irish Licence after April 12th in the event of a hard brexit?

I have an Irish relation that lived in the UK earlier in life and has a UK Licence but wants to retire back to Ireland soon (resides in the USA now) and is now thinking to exchange the UK licence for an Irish one so he can continue to drive in Ireland in the future.

Would he need to do this before the Brexit date or will the exchange of licences continue after a hard Brexit?

    Thanks :)

He cannot exchange now as he is not living in Ireland. It is practically certain that, post a no deal. Brexit, that Ireland and the UK would, in due course, implement a licence exchange agreement. I’d go so far as to suggest that it’s inconceivable that they would not.

Your relation presumably has a U.K. licence which does not expire until 70, ie old paper style. In that case guard it safely as they will not get a replacement from the UK. They would be able to get a certificate of entitlement to use for an exchange if it is lost but they cannot get a replacement U.K. licence legally.

Yes, he is not a resident and only comes and goes for a month here and there usually renting a car at the airport, however he has recently retired and is planning to buy and insure his own car here. He owns property here and has his own address so could just claim to be a resident and has an Irish PPS etc. as he worked here in the seventies before spending time in the UK where he passed his test before getting a US Visa in the mid 80's. He has the old green paper UK licence which was issued sometime in the early 1980's.

Can you get Irish Penalty Points now on a UK licence or EU licence? Most peoples reason for not changing to an Irish licence before was to avoid penalty points.
