Just found out that we basically have been on the wrong rent limits for our area for nearly 3yrs..when the limits increased in july 2016 we were not informed by neither council or hap so have been paying 70euro a month differential rent to landlord for no reason...Council said it was up to us to apply for increase.. even though we never heard it supposedly being advertised..And a slim chance of getting money back..Has this happened to anyone else??

    Mod Note

Off Topic and generally unhelpful posts deleted.

If you have an opinion on HAP. Take it somewhere else.

OP, if you get no useful responses I'll move this thread to the Social Welfare forum.

I would have thought the onus would be on you also to ensure you are up to date with whatever you can receive. The government are not a well oiled efficient unit so the people always need to keep on top of it. I would assume if they always had to keep tenants up to date with everything, it would cost more in admin fees also

OP, under HAP you pay the local authority and they pay the landlord.

If you mean that you've been making an under-the-table payment to the landlord as well because actual the rental cost for the property is higher than the HAP limit - then of course neither the council nor HAP will tell you, because you're doing something you're not supposed to be doing.

Just becuase the HAP limit has gone up in an area does not mean that rent for existing tenancies is moved up to the new limit.

Topping up in permitted in a lot of councils
