Game recommendations - can't decide

    Hey guys,

I'm deciding between buying No Man's Sky and Far Cry 5 next week. I've heard good things about both but can only really buy one as my backlog is shameful. I've played previous Far Cry games and FC5 looks great.
However, the space exploration of No Man's Sky looks really intriguing.
For those of you who have played either or both which one should I go for? I will end up getting both at some point. Thanks.

Work on your backlog, they are both crap

I'd personally go for FC5, but neither are really great. FC5 is more or the same, you know the drill, and while the combat is good, it gets repetitive after a while, with the range of weapon variety not being fantastic. NMS is far better these days than it was, but that's not hard, and unless you mod most of the grind out, it's very grindy. It's far more a surival type game now than an exploration game, but it's not without it's pleasant moments. If you want action, go FC5. If you want exploration/survival, go NMS.

What's your budget and preferred game type and maybe we could recommend something better?

Thanks for the detailed advice. :) Budget is £30.
I did have some others in mind like Final Fantasy 15 and Wolfenstein the Old Blood but tbh I've already narrowed it down to NMS and FC5 and just want to know which of the two is better. I'm going to get them both anyway, it's just a question of which one I get sooner rather than later.

Both very different games. If you haven't played a Far Cry in a good while, FC5 may be alright, but I was worn out of the formula and it didn't do anything to keep me hooked beyond the first area.

NMS is, imo, a great game. I got it on launch and loved it, as I didn't buy into the hype and got exactly what I was hoping for, an endless space exploration game. Yeah, it was a bit thin on the ground back then, but it gave me over 60 hours of enjoyment. It has been improved immensely since, and even has multiplayer things, but no idea how good they are as it's not a MP game for me. Plus, the free VR update coming soon has me hyped, it'll be like a new game imo.

So out of the 2, I'd vote for NMS, but they're such different games it's impossible to know which you would prefer more.

Yea, both are very different games. NMS is a million miles wide, but only an inch deep. It's not bad at all, but there's a very "ordinary" loop to it that really does become a chore and it comes down to a lot of "luck of the draw" in terms of getting a good freighter and collection of S-tier ships and so on. It's the sort of game you'll play for a while and then put down cause you're bored of it and will have never felt like you made any real progress :D

At least Far Cry has some sort of ending - I didn't get 5 cause I've played plenty of FC games and whilst they're enjoyable, I need something different from that series before I'd go back.

Yeah it has a brilliantly clever twist ending that basically says "**** you but thanks for your 40 hours playtime" :D

Far cry 5 but I see you were also thinking of FF15? if that's the case forget them both of them and get FF 15, far better game than either of them.

If you have a VR headset, then hold off on No Man's Sky until the summer.....

Never played No Mans Sky but FC5 is really good. Best Far Cry game since the first one in my opinion. I say that as someone who thought that Far Cry 3/Primal/Blood Dragon/4 were very average.

If you're looking for exploration I'd recommend Subnautica.

I was very on the fence about getting Far Cry 5 - I had finished Far Cry 3 and really enjoyed but only played a couple of hours of Far Cry 4 before giving up out of boredom. I waited for 5 to drop below 20 and picked it up. Really enjoying it so far and I'll probably play it to the bitter end. Also tempted to pick up the season pass now just to get my hands on Far Cry 3 for the PS4.

I got FC5 Gold on launch. Think it cost about €45 total (should have been a sign). Played the first area and traded it in. Only got reminded recently that I had the season pass and FC3 is available for me to download. Might pick up 5 again now that it's down to very little. It's been a while and i've no interest in what games I have at the moment.

1000 time this ^^^^. Subnautica is a cracking little game and well worth playing.

As for the two options listed by the OP

Far Cry 5 is a good game but suffers badly as just being more of the same Far Cry formula with a major been there and done that vibe once you are past the starting area.

No Man's Sky would get my vote between the two games as while abysmal at launch, it has had a crazy amount of free updates added to it with more on the way soon. It's pretty unique with its gameplay loop and you will have a pretty large amount of hours played before it will become repetitive and boredom sets in. The wow factor in NMS does last longer than with most games due to the nature of the game.

The thing is with Far Cry 5 being "more of the same", I don't mind that as I'm not expecting it to be anything groundbreaking, I just want a fun, open world game (and ideally one I can platinum quickly).

You know what? I think I'm just gonna get both lol.

Then get Horizon: Zero Dawn. Extremely fun, different but familiar, and easy enough to Plat. Get it anyway, because it's 3rd in my top 3 of PS4 (behind The Witcher 3 and God of War (in first)).

    Already played HZD.

Looks like I'll only be getting one now as the L3 stick on my PS4 controller is faulty causing the game avatar not to run so need a new controller. :(
I went with Far Cry 5.

I wonder why a guy called "Sephiroth_dude" thinks that FF15 is better than Far Cry 5? :p

Beat and platinumed Far Cry 5 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Will definitely be getting No Man's Sky next month. :D

I've purchased FF15 now. :) Really good price too.
I'm told by a Final Fantasy fan that I will like it because I've never played FF before but FF fans don't like it as much as the others.

    Really good price too.

Is someone paying you to play it? :p
