Last place on a ballot paper is worse than leaving a few blanks. It’s literally not possible for their vote to be transferred to him.

I think people still don’t get this.

Only about 40% of boxes tallied though. Thinking Adam Wyse in trouble but one of him or mulligan def gets in.

Matt Shanahan is polling very well in Waterford East

Certain of a seat and where will his surplus go ?
Seamus Ryan doing well in South. John Hearne too. Breda Brennan struggling but Sinn Fein will get about 28 % in that ward so should hold 2 seats.

Initial commentary said all 3 cities were rejecting it.

bit of a meh factor about the whole weekend locally! same old same old elected to council. it's clear as day the young people didn't come out to vote. the average age of the council must be 60 plus. gone from 4 to 2 woman on the council is a backward step also. the 2 Green cllr elected are very much unknowns and will be interesting to see how they perform. i don't buy the whole green wave thing. still 9 out of 10 people in the country didn't vote for them and greens will seal their soul to be in the next government with already friction within the party.
SF had a disaster nationally and somehow scraped 6 seats again in waterford. bit of a wrap on the knuckles for Cullinane and co.

Labours success also speaks poorly of the constituency ;) We're just a bunch of old comrades!

Genuinely surprised the likes of Griffin and Fitzgerald got in again. Particularly Fitzgerald.

Waterford East had an interesting shake up. It's lost its Fine Gael seat, and there is now a green seat.

Jody Power. Haven't heard anything from him throughout the campaign.

It's not massively interesting in that all of the outgoing Councillors bar one were re-elected.

It'll be interesting to see if there is any impact to seeing two Greens on the council for the first time.

Young people (electorate under 40) have left Waterford in their droves in the last ten years. A lot of them still have their voting address at home but may or may not return to vote.

It's clear that the Greens did well wherever there was a large young middle class cohort. Mom and Dad might be FF or FG, but the kids went Green. While 9 out of 10 voters didn't go for them nationally, in places like Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council a Green candidate romped home way above the quota in pretty much every ward. They're probably just a little disappointed that they didn't have more candidates in those areas because they would have got a lot more in if they did. Waterford didn't have that same impact as it has less young middle class voters across the county.

Interesting to see Labour increase their seats significantly across the county.
