Are you surprised leinster counties are dropping off when only meath have won leinster since 2004. I can only speak for Meath but when mcEntee took over over half the players he asked for trials didn't turn up. The longer this goes on the worse it will get and as a meath fan I can't blame them. Smart decision.

They've Hammered the connaught champs by 18 and Cork who ran kerry very close. Stop deluding yourself only kerry have the ability to lose by less then 6.

    Yes, Meath "won" in 2010.

Looking forward to the two games today.

Mayo have to perform better than 1st day out. They looked disinterested. Meath under McEntee have looked far better than of previous years and showed against Dublin that their defence is shaping up well. Hard on to call, a Mayo team on the wane v a Meath team on the up.

The 2nd match will hopefully be a cracker. Donegal looking good under Bonar and Rochford's influence has helped. Kerry looked strong in the 1st round, but i feel they are reliant on Clifford, although I thought Moran was MOM. If they can stop good ball going into Clifford and have a man actually mark him they can be beaten.

Would kerry prefer to get knocked out in the semi final then be the team Dublin beat in the final for 5 in a row? A lot of kerry guys retired last year looked like they didnt want to be remembered in kerry as the guy on the kerry panal who couldnt stop dublins 5 in a row.

Keane gave some players a chance to walk out and retire most took the chance those taht did not were not invited onto the panel this year. Moat lads that retired last year were not good enough to be there last year and maybe the year before. Killain young is only make the match day panel and not coming on. If Jack Barry and Tommy walsh were available he might not even make the match day panel. Kerry are in a rebuilding phase at present. It will take them another 12-18 months to come fully through and Keane is building for the longterm. They have'nt gone away....

I’d rather bring bomber back for a third stint, tent size jersey and all, than have jack Barry on the match day panel.

Keane came in with a new broom approach but some of the lads he has had in with the panel has been baffling- ditto ones that have been left out.

I was happy with his tactical switches last week but I am loath to read too much into it as I just can’t get over how poor mayo were.

Today is a decent test and will tell a lot so here’s hoping

Roscommon and Cork should be given the opportunity to play their match next weekend. What a waste of time that’s gonna be.

We get it- the competition is a waste of time because the 2 aforementioned teams couldn’t get a result in their first 2 games

I'd hope the teams are given a good night out next weekend and aren't asked to train in the lead up bar maybe a token session next week. They deserve a break before their clubs are no doubt expecting them back training.

Surely an intercounty training session will be of a better standard than a club one so if they do a good intercounty training session- they will be better equipped to perform for their club

I mean that the Ros/Cork clubs will be expecting them back soon after the Cork/Ros match itself, not in the lead up. Club championships will all be resuming in August

But with the game being rendered completely meaningless it would be nice to see the players get a bit of a break in this 2 weeks, before going back to club duty is what I mean

Recovery session today/tomorrow, easy sesdion this week match next weekend recovery 1-2 days later. It's not August yet plenty of time to play off County championship's over the next 20-12 weeks

I hope the only "recovery" they're doing today is sleeping off a hangover

Surely they were allowed go out and bladdered last night, especially Roscommon after a very positive season.

Indeed as a Mayo man I feel for Roscommon, they won Connacht the hard way.Played four division one teams in a row finishing up with a harsh lesson yesterday.

They have a lot of quality up front.

But lads we cant call a competition a farce because 2 of the teams couldnt win one of their first 2 matches.

If anything it gave Roscommon a second chance after losing their first game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,724 ✭✭✭beggars_bush

Roscommon should just concede that game to Cork and give the 2 fingers to the GAA top brass

    Cork have lost 3 games

But thats part of the system and an anomaly that pops up in other sport also.

Like everyone wants changes to the system but then complain about any changes- give these super 8's a chance to bed in and maybe evolve a little.

If I was to make an immediate change then I would drop the Croke Park round and make it a neutral round with the other rounds being home games for the provincial champs.

This would mean that provincial winners have 2 home games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,724 ✭✭✭beggars_bush

    Straight knock out

No game played in Croke Park until the final or semi

What other sport has a round robin two thirds of the way through the competition?

But then you end up with a scenario like Kerry were in before-they got to a semi final by beating Clare, Tipp & Clare again.

Not one single decent game- this is trying to rectify that.
I know its an attempt to plaster over the issues within the provincial championships and I agree that they should be scrapped (if thats what you are getting at) but change is a slow process

Ha! Who had the Dubs to play? Louth and kildare.
    Clare are better than both

Don't think you can blame jim gavin

I'd like to see how he'd get on with e.g. Roscommon or Longford. Or even Kildare

I think he's struggle as I don't see him as a great motivator. He's great in a professional set up where he gets to be very analytical, has a large support staff to oversee and has the threat of a genuinely deep bench to keep players honest. Go to any of the others and you have none of those luxuries. It's a completely different ball game.

The super 8s have been very good at only 1 thing.....extracting money from the diehard fans who hate the thought of missing any matches. That’s it. Nothing else. Roscommon and Cork actually shouldn’t even bother playing that match: or maybe use it a trial match for 16-30.

Open draw, straight knockout is one way forward as the minnows can cause an upset and the best team is not guaranteed to win , the present setup favours the strongest teams with a second chance , the super 8s are a farce , it would be better to bite the bullet and run the league in the summer than what we have.

I enjoy the league a lot
I’d love to make it even more prestigious and put the championship straight back to knockout

The only people benefitting from the super 8s are the money men
It’s a drain on supporters and entertainment value
But more so from a players pov
It must be so hard to be working full time at this time of year

They will surely be scrapped ........

See, I don’t even think they are making much at all. Last year the Croke Park “neutral” games involving Dublin, Donegal, Tyrone and Roscommon had 55,000. Nowhere near that yesterday.

The plan was to make more money but it backfired spectacularly. I'm delighted it did. Next year will be a complete write off. Reap what you sow and all that.

It does cost too much. Last week against Cork €50 for tickets plus €50 for fuel.
Yesterday it was €60 for tickets and €50 for fuel.
    €10'for programmes.
    €11.80 for tolls.
All of this excludes the obligatory burgers on the way home, the sandwiches etc.

Thats before the trip to Tyrone in two weeks time.

I'd prefer the open draw, neutral ground somewhere in the midlands and winner takes all, move onto the semis.

Pity the GAA dont have a proper ground in Athlone to host neutral games.

Tullamore, Portlaoise, Nowlan Park, Limerick, Clones, there's plenty of grounds around thevcountry that could provide a varied geographical mix.

Rubbing their hands together. Couldn't have worked out better. Irish rugby incredibly strong atm, the GAA in self destruct mode.

The amount of players and fans that will switch codes in the coming years will be colossal. The natural progression for anyone involved in gaa will be generally to gravitate towards rugby rather than soccer due to having the physical aspect of the game as well as high quality teams to support in this country.

This is the problem , I know its a cliché but it doesn't really look like football any more , its not an attractive game and this does not generate interest.

Did you not watch Dublin with the great use of the long kick pass into O'Callaghan yesterday? Football at its finest.

A lot of those criticising Dublin don't watch it anyway. I think it was threeball that actually said that.

A bit like my youngest daughter who used to say she didn't like a certain veg even though she had never tried it.

My comment was a generalisation , Dublin wont be doing that against Tyrone or any top 4 team , a rule change is imperative.

When did I criticise Dublins football genius? I actually said you can't fault their football but I don't watch their games because they're boring foregone conclusions.

What rule change might that be? You said football was dead, i pointed out Dublin were using the long kick pass into O'Callaghan and you cite a rule change. At least stick to your point if you are going to reply.

Dublin play watchable football when it suits ,but its fairly obvious from attendances that the game is losing popularity , ban the handpass or at least enforce it , make players kick the ball ;any half decent kickpass and the commentators and pundits rave about it ,give the people what they want.

Should that foul on Boyle not have resulted in a free from where the ball landed? He was fouled after he kicked the ball away.

What are you basing that on.

The upper tiers are open today. Clearly a bigger crowd than yesterday.
