And 16 team get only one game and 24 teams ate out out of the championship after two weeks. Kerry, Dublin, Mayo Donegal and Tyrone all meet on one side of the draw. We end up with one of them meeting Roscommon in the All Ireland Final. We have lads on here screaming about a seeded draw and maybe Di one teams not entering competition until there is only 8 left on the other side. And all this aside from the fact that London and New York compete in the Competition so you have more than 32 teams. So do we have a prelim competition to eliminate one to two teams. Next what about teams that are required to travel to NY or London because these teams got a home draw. New York beats Limerick, Wicklow and to reach quarter finals game is in NY Mayo have to travel play them and draw Donegal in the semifinal. Oh! its unfair on a team to have to play within two weeks after two long distance flights within 17 days of a big match.

The Flaw in the present system is that 3-4 of the teams will be new teams every year and 4-5 will be there continually. As well there is no relegation and at the start of the year for 3-4 teams its the challenge of making it to the QF rather than competing in them. Change and put in a 3 tiered championship at call it Grade A,B and C in3 X groups of 12 ( 32 counties + NY and London as well as Junior all Ireland County champions from previous year and the British provincial champions . Teams are drawn into 2 X groups of 6 and every team in a group playes each other. Teams 2nd and 3 in each group at each grade play in a cross group quarter final, then you play Semi and All Ireland finals.

Bottom two teams in each group play each other across groups to see who is relegated from Grade A to B and B to C. Grade B&C finalists are promoted each year. All Ireland finals are played on the same week end while the A grade is played in CP the B and C finals are played at a venue designated at the start of the year. You could move them around to Venues that hold 30K+ fans. Places like Castlebar, Clones, Killarney, Cork, Thurles and Limerick are all capable of holding such games as well as a few more see below for list of venues. C final is played at 5pm on Saturday Night and B final is played at 7pm.

Relegation battle are played maybe 2-3 weeks before All Ireland finals again at venues chose at start of the year Most venues capable of holding 20k+ supporters could be in the running. Places like Dr Hyde Parke, Wexford park and Nolan park.

Advantages are every team at start of year know that they will get a minimum of 5 games no team exits championship until late July so can prepare for that. No dead rubbers to a great extent as you fight to prevent being relegated. Teams that are promoted have 8 months to prepare for new level of competition. 6 teams playing competitive football until September 1'st. 12 teams in championship until Mid August.

Main disadvantage is that teams have to accept that they will have to reach tier A to compete for Sam. But it that way in Hurling anyway.

There is a greater chance of a division 4 football team competing in the super 8s than any of the non D1 teams in hurling winning an All-ireland or getting to a semi final imo

I find it so pleasing that Donegal were being yanked off all year about how great they are and they ultimately got as far as Meath.

    Delighted!

    Completely over rated team.

They both agree on who deserved to go through and who have been overrated throughout.

Today is a waste of time. Tyrone happy for second.

Makes a complete mockery of RTE coverage.

By the way, RTE had a stupid ad advertising this game. "Who is going to make it to the semi finals of the all Ireland".

Both of them were already guaranteed to be there ffs.

    Super 8's need to go.

Super 8's have proven to be rubbish.
Even before they came in that was obvious.
No one wants a round robin stage at this point of the Championship.

And the scheduling! All of it is brutal.
The GAA for all the talk of being motivated financially have ended up crippling the TV audience for 4 of the main games all season.
Instead of the All Ireland semi finals being on separate weekends where they could get big TV audiences, they get crammed into 2 weekends.
And on top of that, the semi finals are next week with the final not till September 1st???
Such tight scheduling only favors teams with deep squads. Those teams (Dublin) don't need anymore advantages.

Why aren't you comparing like with like? Why does the hurling team have to win an all Ireland but the football team getting into the super 8s?

I've lost interest in the championship now until the semi-finals. And you're right, that scheduling is awful.

Connolly playing is a complete farce. He would be in Boston right now,if there hadn't been some cockup with his registration.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,507 ✭✭✭recyclebin

Hope starting Connolly derails the Dubs. This was a lad who was on the plane to America only a few weeks ago. Taking the dollar over playing for his county. Has Visa troubles and decides to come back to the squad. Could be a mistake from Gavin.

One massive drawback to moving games out of Croke Park is the terrible quality sound systems used for butchering the anthem.

I think he got denied entry this time around.
He was a bit too high profile for the "coming over on a tourist visa and getting paid" scheme.

    Absolutely.
Only playing for Dublin now his visa application got rejected.

he is starting in a friendly game, don't think he will be starting in the semi final.

    Disagree totally
In 2012, Kerry v donegal was a great game
In 2013, Tyrone v Monaghan and Dublin v cork were right battles

In 2014, armagh v donegal was a thriller as was cork.v mayo

In 2015 you had tyrone v Monaghan and in 2016 it was mayo v Tyrone as well Dublin v donegal

I enjoyed the old format, full houses on the August bank holiday weekend and some great do or die games

2017 was the old year that we didnt have a great game

There has been 1 good super eight game in 2 years, Kerry and Monaghan last year

Kerry v Donegal 2012 was good but not better than the best of the super 8 games.

Those 2013 games were won fairly comfortably by both.

Cork v Mayo 2014 was good granted but Armagh Donegal wasn't exactly showered with praise.

Tyrone Monaghan was won comfortably by Tyrone again.

Mayo Tyrone was a good contest but not better than the good super 8 games. Dublin kept Donegal at arms length in 2016.

The past wasn't always great and the present isn't all bad.

There should be a band playing the anthem no matter where the games are played, cut out all the butchering.

A lot of the dublin 1st team did not even travel to the match today ,it would be some kick in hole to them next week when they meet mayo

Marty Morrissey twice states he can’t see an empty seat in the ground yet clearly there is 2 large empty blocks of seats in the stand.

    Woeful commentator!

The arrogance of not even travelling! Super 8 is a joke, sooner they get rid of it the better. Bring back a proper break before semi finals. Two weeks should be the standard for quarter, semis and final. Extra time if necessary to try get winner on the day.

I think its slightly unfair to single out the Dubs for being arrogant on this when you see Tyrone's lineup and bench. Neither team are treating this seriously. While they've every right to do it, would love it to see it come back to bite both in the @rse next week
