I get around a bit and heres my latest experience.
Im a single 50 year old bloke that loves getting around Asia..If you come to my home and knock on my door and no one answers, I am probably somewhere in Asia...
Right now I am in Siem Reap, Cambodia, you older generation might remember the TV ads for the starving children in Cambodia in the 1970s and the Trocaire box collection. There are still many families here getting by on a dollar a day but they are out of sight in the rural areas. I can spend $6/7 on one meal, this would last a family in rural Cambodia week.
In fact one night I spent close to $25 and that was the night of the scam..
I was on Tinder and hit a match, she was a South African girl, teaching in Cambodia, here 2 years, 32 years old, single obviously, recently divorced or so she told me.
We got chatting and decided to meet, she is like 20 years younger than me and it was just going to be a few drinks and a chat on a random Monday night.
We met as planned and she was a breeze to get along with, easy going, friendly, chatty, polite etc etc...Now like I say, I have been around the block and have gotten into and out of some dodge situations in Asia and they all involved women off the internet, but this lady seemed legit and friendly and a bit of a looker to boot.

Siem Reap is well known for its MArijuana and the topic came up if I took the odd toke...Sure, I don't go out and buy it but if there is some wafting around in the air, I will be happy to share a toke, so she asked me if I want some...I was a bit hesitant at first as it was getting on in the night but she twisted my arm.
So off we went, down these back streets about 11pm at night walking further and further from the safety of the tourist zone, where tourist like me buy the over priced food and drinks.
On the way there she was on the phone to a friend to come join us, her friend was from Spain, mid 30s and also a teacher. So thats two teachers out on a Monday night smoking weed..

We arrived at the little hut which had a coulee of dodgy looking westerner hippies sitting out front, clearly off their frikken heads on weed or perhaps something a little stronger like opium.
This joint had a bar and a couple of sofas and random chairs scattered about, all very cosy.
I ordered 2 whiskeys and coke, $1 each, and she ordered a big fat doobie, $2.
And we sat and lit up..first draw for me led to a coughing fit, man that stuff was strong and when you only take a toke about twice a year it really hits you hard.
Nevertheless, I was soon sat in comfort, sipping on my whiskey with my new South African friend beside me...and then she showed up.
The spanish chick was like a vision from heaven when she entered the small dark room, she kissed my friend on the cheek, I stood to greet her and she kissed me on the cheek and then she sat down to my left on the sofa...
So picture the scene, one dingy bar, one crap sofa, me in the middle, to my left, one hot chick, to my right another hot chick.

It was about this time little alarm bells started going off in my mind, with big flashing lights.
Was I too late, was my drink spiked already, we had chatted about roofies earlier in the evening when talking about the dangers of travelling alone, be it male or female. On top of this I was also a little stoned which added to my paranoia, the room seemed to be getting darker and closing in on me.
I tried to convince myself that these two were not scammers, I didn't know the Spanish chick but I had spent a week on Tinder chatting to Africa Girl and over the last few hours saw no signs of anything awry.
Then things got weird, the girls were chatting across me and asking about what we should do, it was hitting midnight, I was a little drunk and stoned and so was Africa.
She mentioned that she had a bottle of whiskey back in her place, maybe we could get more weed, some coke (for the whiskey, not to snort) and all 3 of us go back to hers, when she was saying this, her hand was gently rubbing my leg and giving Spanish a dirty little smile, she was making it very clear what was going to happen.
"Okay, I said...Lets go', We walked out the door soon after with coke cola and another two joints, waited for about 2 minutes and a tuk tuk came along, I let the ladies in first and I flustered around with my bag while they gave instruction to the driver to where to take us.
And with that, I took a look at the ladies and said...'Sorry ladies, I have to go' and swiftly walked up the street in the opposite direction in which the tuk tuk was pointing...I don't know where I was going and I didn't look back to witness the look of confusion on the faces of these two ladies.
And thats another one of those nights where I don't know if I was going to be raped and robbed by a pack of hungry Cambodian men or a night where I was going to heaven and back.
But, next day I was deleted from tinder, clearly a scam and fortunate enough to get away lightly....It kind of reminds me of the time I was in Bangkok about a decade ago and these two ladies approached me in a shopping Mall as I was looking at the Menu in the window of a restaurant..
"You are eating here' They asked
"I am thinking about it'
"You come to our house and we will make you lunch"
My mind was saying "its a scam don't do it' But when I opened my mouth to the decline their offer what came out was
"Sure, I would love to go to yours for lunch"
5 Minutes later we were in a Taxi heading to their house...

Look at all those sweet, sweet "thanks" though, for just thirty seconds' typing - arguably a better rate of appreciation than has been shown for your Junior Cert essay about how you got stoned and talked to two hot girls and nothing happened.


I have no doubt whatsoever that you have many interesting stories - I just feel that if you are going for that autobiography, then perhaps you should hire someone else to do the writing.

This, a sensible guy would have maintained his own sobriety and let the women get shipwrecked if they wanted. Most likely they wanted a 3-way but involving drugs is never a good idea, especially in a tinpot 3rd world place like that. I'm calling out the validity of this, because if you were as seasoned as you say you'd have the common sense to avoid cannabis as a 50 year old man.

In a town called livingstone in Zimbabwe years ago I decided to check out the local illegal currency exchange..said I would try to change 20usd first to see how I got on .went up to a guy on a street corner who I knew was at it .asked to change 20 usd for zim dlrs sound we snuck around the corner I handed him the dollars an he handed me a rather large roll of cash.great says I to meself this'll do me for a while only later when I opened the roll could I see that only the outside notes were real money the rest was just cut up newspaper...oh shamnspace you prize plonker

Boy oh boy, didn't I get shafted big time last night...Its new year celebrations in most of Asia, the party started 4 days ago and ended last night.
I went out on the first night and had a blast, stayed home for 2 nights and then went out for the final night, the small town of Siem Reap was pumping, tourists and locals were best friends after copious amounts of beer.
Anyone that has visited Asia for the new year will know all about the 'water fights' that go on for 3/4 days, everyone just throws water at everyone...they use water guns, cups, pots, pans, glasses, 2 minute noodle disposable cups, if it holds water it is used as a weapon with water being the ammo...Cant really do it justice here but heres a link to the same festival in Siem Reap last year. https://youtu.be/Waa3kmjUULc
Anyway, I had a few cheap whiskeys at home before I headed out, Bought the whiskey about a week ago from some dude on the street for about 4 Euro, cheap crap and after sipping on 4 whiskeys over the course of a few hours, I decided it was total **** and dumped the rest down the kitchen sink, pouring it onto the ants that like to dart around the bowl of the sink searching for edibles.
I walked up the dirt road to the Main Street and as usual, there was 3/4 tuk tuk owners vying for my dollar...$3 into town, which is about a 15 minute ride, tuk tuks are not the most comfortable to ride in at the best of times due to lack of suspension and the dodgy roads of Siem Reap and to make things worse, the roads were lined with people chucking water at anything that moved. I don't know how the people on the Honda 50s managed to stay on their vehicles and remain in a straight line while water was going from all directions. There could be 3/4 people on one of these Honda 50s. usually 2 parents a young child a 6 month old baby, none wearing a helmet.
I made it into town rather dry, my driver gave a signal to any possible water bombers to 'please don't and they complied.
Made it into Pub Street, which is actually a lot of streets where the pubs, clubs and restaurants are...that was too full on for my liking and didnt really offer the opportunity to meet a lovely single lady, so I took to a side street which was busy but the bars a little emptier and confidently walked into one which had a few people milling around outside with water guns , a pool table and a few more people inside all looking and sounding like they hadnt left the place for 3 days..
I ordered a beer and went back outside to see if I could engage with the lady that was wearing a short little white dress, she caught my attention due to absolutely everything about her, her smile, her hair, her dress, they way she was brandishing an over sized water gun, the way she screamed in delight when she scored a full face water hit of some unsuspecting passerby.
After like 5 minutes of that, I got bored and went inside looking like a wet handsome 50 year old bloke and put my name down to play pool, there were 4/5 names before me, same rules as usual, winner holds the table and takes on the next name on the board. And the lady in white seemed to have a partner, another tourist with a beard, a few tatts and bit of a big belly so no point in sitting outside dreaming about this lady when she was already taken, lucky man I thought to myself, she had a rocking body in the little white dress and against her dark skin and long black hair...she was indeed a vision of beauty.
I settled in with the drunk people, an American, a Norwegian, an English guy, a scotty and the Cambodian bar staff..weed was being passed around like it was free, and it pretty much was, I didn't bother with it as I didnt want the paranoia wave come crashing down upon me.
And then guess who walked into the bar, the lady in the little white dress...her name was called as she was next on the pool table.
Lady Luck was shining down upon me last night for as I just happened to be in prime position to interact with her as she played pool, she kicked ass on the pool table, sign of a misspent youth, although she was/is only 24 so pretty much a sign of someone misspending their youth. She also won the next game and we became a little closer... to be competing against each other...
She lost the next game which meant I got to take on the UK bloke who happened to have a very hot GF from France, she looked like Vanessa Paradis from 20 years ago complete with gap between from teeth. Heres a blast from the past. https://youtu.be/WXnR7iZy0ZM

Main street but it was 15 mins into town and
$3? Having spent a fair bit of time in Siem reap this is the real scam if your paying $3 for a tuk tuk into town.

On the topic of being scammed, I probably spent 18 months floating around Asia and only two stories come to mind. One in Vietnam with a couple of chancers meant I ps4 if probably $10 for a lift that should have been 1 dollar, that was my fault for not negotiating before I hopped on.

The 2nd time was actually after I left Siem Reap, I'd gotten extremely sick there but was flying to the Philippines, when I landed I went to a medical centre whixh tried to charge me 650 euro for medicine and consultation. Had to pay 90 euro for consultation and left with the prescription. Went to the next pharmacy, bucket load of meds for $12, so ripped off but could have been worse. I find if your usually serious and assertive, people don't push it with you.

I heard some horror stories and it's usually the fault of the individual telling the story

Main Street as its the main road through to Phnom Phen...And yes, I could get a tuk tuk for $2..but I offer $3 upon jumping into the tuk tuk...$3 for a 15 minute ride into town is fair value for me and for them considering the driving conditions. One driver got $10 cos his bike was running like **** and we just made it to town, I gave him the 10 and told him to repair his bike...a driver last night got four and then 2000 riel for each of his 3 kids that he kept on telling me about..

Something very sad about lonely old men creeping around tourist and backpacker spots trying to be one of the cool kids. Especially when they end up writing long posts on the internet just to get some sort of connection with somebody.

50 years old like. When I hear of 50 year old men hanging around Asia I just assume its a Gary Glitter thing to be honest.

I think you made a mistake that you now regret and are trying to justify your actions.
There was no scam. The weed made you paranoid and you turned down an opportunity that could have been a night to remember.
