No way will diskless version be under 400, no one should even be expecting that.
Disk version, 500 would be great, 550 acceptible, hopefully nothing over that. 450 would be fantastic but not expecting it to be under 500.

    What I'm hoping from tonight:
    - PS plus to now include PS now in 1 happy bundle that is still completely shyte and overpriced compared to Gamepass.
    - Demons Souls /PS5 launch bundle with choice of black console.
    - NBA 2K21 Next Gen details

That would be a start, I've had a PS+ paid subscription since it launched about 10 years ago and wouldn't mind getting a bit more out of it.

I know they release monthly games with it but a lot of the times its games I've 0 interest in or ones I've already owned or played so I haven't got as much out of it as I've put in to it, that my own fault really.

Sony know this too and know that regardless of price people will pay so no need to take the 500 hit

There's a rabid fanbase that are willing to take the hit but they're not going to be enough to sustain the console and price does matter. Look at the launches for the PS3 and the Xbox One.

True but probably both be sold out one way or the other come Xmas.

    Ya, thats another issue.

It'll more likely be the kids seeing it on social media asking their parents can you get me and XBox or a PS and parents not being clued in, will be late to the punch which in turn feeds into some people buying 2 or 3 of them to jack up the price on DoneDeal or the likes to make a killing off parents for Christmas time. :o

If Sony price it at circa €600, they might lose a % of their fan base.

I really don't know where people are getting these predictions from, I can't see them ever doing this again after the PS3. There is no way it costs more than €500, I am so confident about this, I will listen to an entire Coldplay song if I am wrong.

On that note, f*ck anyone who buys anything at launch with the sole purpose of selling at a profit when said item sells out.

I think Sonys advantage was holding out until after MS announced their pricing.

They've 2 options if they were going to sell at over €500, adjust their price point down to be closer to MS or go maintain a slightly higher RRP and hope the fan base gets behind it from the off.

Although in this day in age, theres a lot of people who own both consoles, maybe not both at launch, but over the consoles lifetime, its feasible to pick up both if theres exclusives on one or the other.

I went to the trouble of googling Coldplay's longest song to find this for you if you're wrong. A whopping 7 minutes 17 seconds of pure Chris Martin bollox. I haven't listened to it myself, it could be a banger :pac:

There was a s**t ton of people doing it for the PS4 launch.

I've no doubt it will be the case around the XBox/PS5 launch too, I can imagine last things parents want to do is disappoint their kids around Xmas.

I'd like to think if i was a kid and the parents said they couldn't get me a console for Xmas but I'd get one in a few weeks time, I'd take it on the chin and suck it up.

I remember for the original PS1 I was told a similar story albeit with a happier ending, I was 10 at the time so Santa wasnt a thing for me, Xmas eve came parents said they coudlnt get their hands on one but I'd get one when new shipments came in. I was disappointed but understood but woke up Xmas morning to one in the living room, it was probably the best Xmas day ever. :pac:

I think €500 is about the max you're going to get the casual punter to pay for a console, especially at the moment - tbh, it'll probably be too high a price point for many families this Christmas in these Covid times. I can see the series X being a major seller compared to all the other consoles because of this.

I know people try to make the comparison to the amount that people pay for their phones and the cost of a console but I think that's pretty much a bullshít comparison. A phone is going to be a lifestyle accessory in a way that a console can never be to the average person. Also, most people get their phones on plans so they are not shelling out the cost upfront so even though they will get screwed by their network provider over the course of the plan, they don't get that massive sting at the beginning.

I think the Xbox Series S will be a big seller because people will see a new console and under cutting the rest by €100.

Trying to explain to someone who isnt clued in or anyway tech savvy why a Series S isnt really a New Gen console in relation to the Series X or PS5 will fall on deaf ears, especially if you're the one forking over the cash.

I'd say the difference with a console and a phone though is night and day. You might get a new phone every 2 or 3 years because of the plan and upgrades you're due, a console will last nearly a decades worth of use.

Consoles are also pretty much inflation proof. A new iPhone or Samsung, top of the range would cost circa €900-1000 if you went ready to go and prices have increased steadily the last decade or so.

Console prices, for what you're getting, if you consider inflation, have been remarkably low, IMO.

that is very true though if MS had that all access running in Ireland series X sales would be through the roof especially with all the ****e going on at the moment

Rumours floating around from a couple people on Resetera stating pre-orders will start immediately after the show tonight. Hope that's not the case and they wait till Friday or something.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,438 ✭✭✭RedXIV

One thing to keep in mind though about the "clueless parents" is that this is a rapidly diminishing demographic. Games have only gotten bigger and bigger over the last few decades and the mainstream hype of SNES vs MegaDrive or even PSX vs N64 vs Saturn were huge and games became very mainstream. Vast majority of parents now would be familar with games and concepts such as "Little Timmy wants a Playstation because the games he wants are only on Playstation". While I can see some parents not understanding the digital subscriptions etc, I'd be surprised if we had many parents coming in saying " I need a video game box, price is the only denominator".

On a side note, I'm hoping for the following tonight:
    1. PS Now update - I think this needs to evolve more
    2. 2 more PS5 launch titles (I just need to nail down my options for Day 1 purchase and nothing grabbed me yet)
    3. Prices and release dates
    4. Plans on how the migration of digital libraries will carry forward.

I've decided on the Diskless version as I'm only actively using the Sekiro disk but don't see me playing much more of that once Demon's Souls comes out.

****, I meant to say Series S in my original post. Fúcking Xbox names...

Definitely see the Series S being the big winner this Christmas. If I was buying a console myself this Christmas I'd probably go for it to try out GamePass. And yes I know it's not going to be comparable to the Series X or PS5.

Honestly, how many people are going to buy a €1,000 phone on pre-pay? The vast majority are people on contracts.

€100 cheaper than the Digital PS5 if they manage to get €400. More likely we'll be looking at a minimum of €450-500 so the difference is €150-200.

A parent could get an Series S and two years of Game Pass for less than €450 so that'll be a great deal for them, especially for people who have younger kids.

I'm in my forties now and most people my age that I socialise with don't give two shíts about gaming so they are still plenty of people that are going to be absolutely clueless about consoles when it comes to picking up one for their kids. Also, price is going to be a much bigger factor this year than it would have been last year.

If a kid gives their parents shít over spending €300 on a console and not spending €500 then that kid is an absolute dick stain.

    I agree. But kids....

That’s the parents fault somewhat if they bring up their kid to be like that.

I was over the moon with anything I got at Christmas growing up but i did get a Dreamcast one year so that kept me happy :pac:

If a kid acts like that, they don't deserve to have any money spent on them. Honestly, if one of my kids went into a strop over getting a new console for Christmas because we couldn't afford to get them the one that was €200 dearer, I'd return the one they got and they could go without.

For me, something like a PS5 would have to be an all-family present. I couldn't justify, or afford, shelling out €500 on one child for one present.

I agree with ya, most parents now a days will have had some exposure to a console at some stage so would in general have an idea.

But it will have to be driven by their kid saying my friends are playing this console I want you/santa to get me this console please.

There'll still be people caught out, I'd imagine more so by the Series S over the Series X.

To be honest a xbox with game pass ultimate subscription is a much better deal for a kid below the age of maybe 12/13. the get all the same games they and their mates can play, they have the ability to bring the console on every holiday that has wifi with Xcloud.

i doubt kids are looking 3 years down the line for the latest GoW or TLOU considering they dont remember the series

Minecraft and FIFA included in Game Pass and then Fortnite is free. I never hear my little cousins mention any other games.

I've a buddy whos got 2 kids at console playing age, 7 & 10 and between the 3 of them play Fortnite and Warzone and theres been constant bickering between the two lads over the time and use of it.

Problem is now the 2 lads are aware of the PS5 so Santa might be getting a request for 2 PS5's.

My guess for the pricing is €400/€500 for the Digital/Disk versions. Don't think they could go any lower than that for the digital, and a €100 difference seems about right. Don't think they'll want to go much more than the Series X so they'll go 500 aswell.

    Few random predictions for tonight:

    - Miles Morales gameplay. Seems fairly likely if that's presumably a launch title, very little of it shown so far
    - Maybe a long shot but maybe Demons Souls announced for launch. Either way the launch line up should become more clear.
    - An update/upgrade on PS Now, maybe bundled with Plus like others say.
    - A teaser of a big 1st party game that won't be out for a couple of years, GOW2 maybe.

    And the big one...

    - GTA V next gen gameplay :pac:
