Talking of price, did the PS3 sell out at launch?

  • Registered Users Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

I think the PS3 was massively loss making for Sony when it was launched and it wasn't until a few years after launch did they start to see some return once they could trim down production costs.

The Wii was huge back then too so it had fierce competition.

Nope, I casually strolled into the Game on Dawson St and got one a week after launch. I had visited 2 other shops that morning and both had them in stock, I was after a specific bundle in Game. It did come out in March though, so that is somewhat of a mitigating factor, it may have been a bit scarcer had it launched the previous November.

If the digital is more than €500 I will listen to an entire Coldplay album.

    Seriously.

Surely that contravenes some human rights accords, even if self-inflicted.

They are going to have to squeeze the price for sure. Unless they have a budget version of the console up their sleeves to compete with the Series S! I'm much closer to the casual end of the gamer spectrum and never thought I'd be interested in an Xbox, but an expensive Ps5 in short supply and I'd be fairly tempted to go with a Series S for sure.

It almost certainly does, but there is no fear of a law being broken here. There is no way on earth I would agree to do something so damaging to myself if I wasn't so sure I was right.

We'll need before and after pictures. I was gonna suggest a live stream but then you risk accountability for inflicting the album on others.

I'd say if they realised they had to lower their price based on Series X, then they'll probably settle with the discless version being that price

Well a live stream would work, just don't have mic on so viewers wouldn't hear the music. All we care about are the reactions anyway

I would imagine that livestream would be akin to the video in The Ring

The video will become an urban legend.

You can answer that question for yourself by listening to their music.

I strongly suggest that you do not answer that question for yourself.

Yeah but you seem obsessed by them lately. If you want any help getting them out of your head, I will try to fix you.

Moaning about Coldplay is a full-time job, and the work is never done.

Ah, he probably just doesn't like being Yellow. Probably finds it all a bit too much Trouble.

Anyway, looking at the Clocks, only 4.5 hours to wait for the showcase and see if Markitron will be less sane tomorrow

Sony gearing up for their big sequel announcement this evening!

(I should probably let this running Knack gag go, but this is what happens in the absence of substantial information).

One thing to keep in mind though about the "clueless parents" is that this is a rapidly diminishing demographic. Games have only gotten bigger and bigger over the last few decades and the mainstream hype of SNES vs MegaDrive or even PSX vs N64 vs Saturn were huge and games became very mainstream. Vast majority of parents now would be familar with games and concepts such as "Little Timmy wants a Playstation because the games he wants are only on Playstation". While I can see some parents not understanding the digital subscriptions etc, I'd be surprised if we had many parents coming in saying " I need a video game box, price is the only denominator".
I'm in my forties now and most people my age that I socialise with don't give two shíts about gaming so they are still plenty of people that are going to be absolutely clueless about consoles when it comes to picking up one for their kids. Also, price is going to be a much bigger factor this year than it would have been last year.

Same experience for me - you'd be surprised about how many people, even as yuong as 32-33 who had a SuperNES or even a Playstation growing up, know exactly diddly squat about games and especially consoles. My "social circle" would be 35-45 mainly in age, and not one of them owns a console nor know anything about them - and I know some look at me like I am a 2 meters tall child for playing videogames :D.

For all the talk about gaming being mainstream and having a more mature audience, the real world experience doesn't really reflect the stats - maybe there's a geographical difference at play as well (or kids just lie on surveys - how many times did we put our age as "18-24" on something online when we were 15? :D), but most people who aren't into technology and IT, still see gaming as a "kid's thing" and tend to fall out of it as they age. Hence, they end up completely estranged from the market and when their kid asks for the new console, they have no metrics to base on.

Knack is appearing as a guest character in Godfall I thought, it feels only right as Godfall has taken its mantle as a painfully mediocre launch title.

Hopefully they show some decent games tonight and not stuff like GTA V or spiderman, i probably won't get the PS5 this year but if it has good games i am more likely to get it sooner

There were rumours of some new games still to be announced (Silent Hill reboot and new God of War were the ones I heard), but who knows how far away they'd be, even if true.

Gonna guess €450 digital and €550 disc. Allows Sony to market the cheapest true ‘next gen’ console.

Looking forward to the event this evening and hopefully getting my preorder in ASAP!

173 pages, about 160 of them are people guessing at the price :pac:

    Please make it stop Sony!:D

I'm gonna say 479 Euro for the disc version and pre-order this week just to give the xbox the two fingers. :pac:
