Is it just me or are the majority of mods on this website far to heavy handed?

Nothing wrong with open discourse. Censorship suppresses diversity.

Can't tell if it's bad policy or power trip stuff tbh.

    That's a bonfire. In August.

I'm guessing you like a 'parade' in July though. That's a proper hate parade.

I think the message is that one's political views don't matter in this situation, and politics in general are irrelevant. This is a tragedy that has affected everyone. The woman transcended all divides and touched hearts of everyone regardless of their beliefs and views.

Discussing politics in regards to her and her untimely death kinda underestimates all that. Just my take.

Aye I can see where that is coming from and it does make sense. But truthfully politics religion and sectarianism is part of everyday life in ni. It's pretty impossible to talk about us without involving politics tbh.

Especially given the circumstances of this poor woman's death. It's a direct result of political opinions.

That's true, but I think for now the main focus should be on who the woman was. It's a time of national mourning and that's what should be at the heart of discussion of recent events.

But that should not detract from the real issue - that NI should not be part of the UK. Even although there is an agreed (and democratic) process for this to happen.
sure you can close your eyes and say yup everything just fine here.

If it were, given the distance involved with a handgun he'd be a candidate for the olympics. So, highly doubtful.

Depends on your definition of "targeted".
The individual who was killed, no.
The group of police and journalists, yes.

Just a pity that I didn't hear of this woman when she was alive.read her stuff and listened to her Ted talk and she seemed like an excellent journalist

Picture taken from the vigil last night held in Derry for Lyra.

If it puts a lid on the escalation of violence up there, well then that might be the one and only good thing to come from her death.

Not if reports from people beside her that the bullet bounced off a jeep before hitting here are accurate in such a situation

    Absolutely categorically certain.

If you have seen any of the videos of the area at the time of the incident you'll see it was likely that what was targeted was the jeep and unfortunately she was hit by chance.

I suspect that the perpetrator had zero desire to actually kill someone but yet, they did so.*

*I'm not saying this in any way whatsoever excuses their behaviour.

the DUP will not allow it to progress. It is ironic that this victim is one that would not be recognised or given all her rights because of the continued behaviour of the DUP.
    .

This is just weird even from you. So Irish republicans are now protecting lgbt rights by murdering them.

The DUP are against gay marriage. Wrong imo but that’s their and many others views on the matter. How you seriously managed to try and deflect the fact that Irish republicans have just murdered some wee girl in Londondoire is mind blowing.

Republicans have a bloodlust let’s face it. This is just but one more example.

Absolutely not, saw the video of the guy pulling the trigger. He's shooting through a fence, in the dark. I'd imagine aiming at the van she was beside.

Was the footage of her standing in a crowd from just before she was shot? If it was she was desperately unlucky. Apparently the bullet hit the van and then she was struck by the ricochet

Condolences to her family, partner and friends.

It was a horrendous thing to happen.

I'm as interested in seeing a United Ireland in my lifetime as anyone - but there is a process in place for this.

I didn't condone the murders of Bloody Sunday marchers. I didn't condone the Omagh bombings. I don't condone the murder of this young lady, either. It is absolutely appalling.

RIP Lyra. You should not have died. You were an inspiration in life, and coincidentally, in death, you remain one, in the sense that you have united Nationalist and Unionist alike in condemnation of those responsible for
    yet another senseless death.

Surely there is incitement as an offence.

Maybe the Guards are happy for them to come out into the open & be filmed & identified.

WTF was going on there. Is this real? Were these lads actually parading down the city centre of Dublin wearing paramilitary gear and dark glasses? On the weekend that's in it, following the events of last week?

If it's true, we really need to get a good firm grip on ourselves and stop this in it's tracks now.

I'm wondering if the 2 teenagers they have lifted for questioning are the 2 were see in the videos firing the gun and then lifting the spent cases?

From past experience, the police often lift people soon after an incident like this to:

    1) show the public they are on top of the situation
    2) try to get a scared youth to squeal on the real perpetrators

I would love it if they have actually got the 2 scumbags we all seen in the video.

Jesus, enough already. That point has been made several times. It is quite clear what I was asking, let me rephrase just in case...was the individual journalist Lyra McKee targeted, is that ok? And it has been answered, no she wasn’t. Because, although just as tragic, targeting specific individual journalists is a lot more concerning than a bullet ricocheting off something and hitting someone. Either way, I think the question has been answered anyway, thanks.

Apparently. They appeared to have the street closed for them.

Even if the murder had not occurred why are we even allowing that

Embarrassing for the city to say the least.

Unfortunately, they are allowed "peaceful" marches, under human rights laws. No permission is required when less than 5000 people march, according to what I have read. I'm not sure how accurate that is.

Personally, I'd prefer this particular group didn't march, but preventing them would set a nasty precedent for other, more acceptable group marches, and would also give them an excuse to play the victim, and possibly gather more followers, so, on that basis, as distasteful as I find it, I'm willing to tolerate it, - grudgingly.

Sadly what we have to put up with to have an open society with free democracy.

I would say many people standing about watching would not have even make the connection with the march and what happened in Derry.

If a PSNI officer had been killed, there would not have been anything like the outcry that ensued, and furthermore, if they ever catch the gunman, he will probably only be charged with manslaughter.

Agree that anyone ever charged with this killing will not be charged with murder.

Isn't murder premeditated? The gunman did try to murder policemen, but killed a bystander by mistake. That's manslaughter is it not?

It is all simmering just below the radar it seems, judging by some comments on here.

What an awful thing to happen to that woman, her partner, her family, and her circle of friends.

But I am very afraid that the cycle of killing and violence is still upheld and justified by some.

Anyway, the reaction of the vast majority is one of disgust. That is very good. Need to build on that very quickly I think now.
