City havent conceded a goal from open play since the newcastle game in Jan. They are an incredible team.

That’s unbelievable and a testament to this Liverpool side to push them this far. There isn’t much you can do when a team is this good. I fully expect City to beat Brighton now and win the league.
When is the last time that a team in pole position on the last day failed to win it? Blackburn did there best to do that, but still won despite losing on the final day.

Since City last dropped points, Liverpools have drawn 4 games and dropped 8 points.

City's run is insane but Pool not turning any one of those 4 draws, leicester (H), West ham (a), Utd (a), Everton (a) looks to have cost them the PL.

Last 2 games with dropped points, United and Everton. Their fans will be heartbroken they may have made significant contributions to stopping Liverpool winning the league.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Kompany has a clatter of kids.

    He only has two kids?

Ok. I saw him with 5/6 on the field after the game. Thought they were all his.

Thank f*ck it wasn't a controversial goal, if that is going to be the goal that effectively decides the league.

City have had a tough run in and made up the points, if they win it from here it will be an amazing turn around from some 14 or 15 games ago.

Would go down as the greatest PL side of all time too. At least someone has ran them the close the rest of us have been awful. :o

In fairness the guy looks like a giant at times, could well have been the u17 squad surrounding him!

Whoever you support, for Liverpool to only loose one game, all season, in the league and not to win it...THATS NUTS !

There's next week yet. Brighton might give them a scare and wolves still have the Europa League spot to play for, Everton could pip them yet, wouldn't rule out a few shocks yet.

It is the head to head games that cost Liverpool, Man City picked up 4 points and Liverpool 1. So Liverpool have got more points over the other 18 than Man City have as it currently stands

Ridiculous that a team this good could not win the league.

Yeah and that Mahrez penalty miss at Anfield cost Man City two points in that head to head.

Wolves have 7th wrapped up already, still be a tough game though, Wolves been outstanding v top 6.

Brighton you'd imagine will be on their holidays, but it ain't over til it's over. QPR & City springs to mind in 2012

If they beat Brighton they will have taking 54 points out of the last 57 available. Ive never seen a team as good as them in the PL. Apart from winning most weeks they also pretty much dominate every game they play in.

QPR were trying to avoid relegation that day though, weren't they? Brighton are due a win and a big performance but they are very poor. Watched their game against Arsenal at the weekend and they needed all the help that Arsenal gave them to get that point. City won't be as generous, you'd think.

    Disagree.

Remember this was the state of play ahead of the game at the Etihad between Man City and Liverpool:

    7a1086b9-26e6-468d-8ff0-2468883d08ae.png

    From the BBC:
Liverpool began 2019 with a seven-point lead at the top - no team has ever failed to win the title after heading into the new year so far ahead.

It was still in Liverpool's hands even after the loss to City.

heres hoping we get a proper Super Sunday (before Sky called every Sunday such) - think ther will be a few twists and turns , remember Blackburn in '95 and City themselves in '12 - for football I think it would be good if liverpool did it.

That kompany goal the first time I have had doubts about pool winning the league this season. And it was compounded by iheanacho’s miss. I still have hope though! It’s the hope that kills you...

Why are Brighton suddenly “due a win and a big performance” though?
Wouldn’t they have preferred that much earlier than the last game of the season?

He's out of contract so he may well be.

Pep said they'll have a sit down end of season and do the best for both parties.

There is nothing funnier than people bending over backwards trying to paint Liverpool's season as a collapse of sorts.

Just watched that miss again. Christ it was a great chance.

Shackles off, so you usually see a bit of a spurt from a team at that point. Think Arsenal away was their big performance though. Very lucky to stay up and I think this will be Hughton's last game in charge for them, sadly.

Incredibly harsh, isn't it. They've been brilliant. Mad to think they could (probably will) end up without a trophy. Can't see them turning it around tomorrow night, minus Salah and Fir.

Good gameweek for United fans in fairness, they got a battling point at Huddersfield and their second team won the league.

    Kompany.... what a ba5tard!!

What a man though, I'm no City fan, but this guy is amazing. For all the gazillions the Arabs have spent through City in the last 10 or so years, it's still this center back that was there when they took over that is the go to man whan pep/City need something in a big game. Kompany has been patched up/juiced up and stuck together with duct tape and superglue for the bigger games (this season especially), is clearly trusted by Pep more than the likes of Stones and or Laporte who hundred millions were spent, and comes up with an extraordinary goal in a pressure situation like tonight. Unbelievable Jeff.... this lad is an amazing servant to City, and a real hero in footballing terms. Pure strength of will and character (as Brendan would say).

Actually it was pretty apparent by the halfway stage that there was a gulf in class between the top and the rest of the league. Liverpool went into the game with their toughest rival knowing a win put them 10 pts clear, a draw left them 7 pts clear, and a loss left them 4 pts clear and never having to play City again.

Think any fan would love such a scenario, and I can't see how you can feel the title came down to the games with City. Seems a stretch really.

alot of whatabboutery. 4 points in January it's nothing. Especially when the team chasing goes on and takes 54/57 points. No one could predict that it's ridiculous. So yes the difference maker was the head to heads

4 points is highly significant in a league which is akin to a showjumping contest where the least number of faults wins you the title. Liverpool could have ended the race that very day with a win, and gave a good account of themselves in the game as a I recall.

This point was being highlighted back in November:

    https://twitter.com/PremLeaguePanel/status/1059150932120875009

It was in Liverpool's hands. This talk of "isn't it incredible to have kept up with such a phenomenal City side" is revisionist nonsense.

Every title is in every teams hands then. Your point is nonsense. City will have dropped 3 points since the turn of the year. They won the league, Liverpool didn't hand them jack****. They were made work every step of the way and did it through talent, guts, determination and more.

Hang on are you saying liverpool bottled it and should have reached a 100 points. The same side that came 4th last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,289 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Ill leave you with your opinion on it as it's either your bias or you don't understand the significance of two teams collecting shy of ,100 points.
City lost 3 and drew 2 before January, city didn't look the same team as last but they actually got even better in the 2nd half of the season.

No one wins a title in January, your the one talking revisionist nonsense.

The whole point of a title race is every game counts. Liverpool were in the enviable position of knowing they didn't have to play a game against their main title rivals for the rest of the season and with a lead of 4 points, even negating the need of goal difference.

If you want more proof over how the competitiveness of the league was being questioned even in November time, months before the big head to head at the Eithad, read this Guardian piece:

Premier League the most competitive in the world? You must be joking

That assessment has been vindicated as the season has progressed.
