I shot one on the range some years back (about 3 or 4 years ago). It was a Remington 700.

The rifle was accurate enough, but prone to much more wind drift than other calibers of the same ballistics. The ammo is hard enough to find, not a huge selection from what i was told, and not many RFDs stock it and not repeatedly. Price of ammo was in the €25+ per 20 rounds mark so the same as most 223 ammo.

Resale wise. The one i fired had been for sale for a few years with absolutely no interest. The guy that owned it was shooting off the last of his ammo before getting it rebarreled.

Hi .17 WSM is the way to go, drop a Fox at 200, ammo 25 euro for 50 rd.

Savage are the main players in this cal.

At the end of the day it's the price of ammo that makes a big difference.

Is 200 yrs from experience of using it? Or just a guess.

Very good. What kind of range on foxs. Would 150 yds be a problem for a clean kill. What kind of group can you get with it.

Good for 200yards,but light round if wundy

So 150yrs would not be a problem. Wind drift at 150 yds should be minimal.

It was a cz 22 hornet, the barrel was changed for a custom made 17 barrel, pat sluds made a custom adjustable stock for it, the action is exactly the same as the 22 hornet, only the barrel is changed

That's a 17 Hornet. It is the 17 WSMR I am referring to.

Think folks are confused with the calibre.

Is this the round/calibre your talking about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,004 ✭✭✭minktrapper

Yes. .17 WSMR also known as the .17 Winchester Super Magnum Rimfire.

It's an old thread and I think people were talking about different calibres at the time. 17 B Mag is the rifle, by Savage, in 17 WSM calibre.

Ok have ya now, .17 B Mag, know someone who had one.

1 Problem with firing cock rifle and no bang, why I don’t know.

2 It was a Savage, and the fore end was flexing to much, ie touching the barrel.

3 it a good cal to a point, for Rabbits etc, but not for Foxes, not strong enough for a 1 Rd certain kill.
