Anyone here know how easy it is to remove gold plating from a old watch?

I was looking at certain old Seiko's that seem to mostly be gold plated and most are half worn so it's the silver showing

I'd love it in the silver just don't want to buy and find out I'd have a lot of trouble removing the gold plating

Does anyone know of a site with a catalogue of old Timex watches?

My mother has a watch that belonged to her grandmother that I want to send off to be fixed/serviced for her and I'd like to try get a bit more info in the watch itself.

I realise a service is going to be many multiples of the value of the watch but it's sentimental. She got the watch around the early to mid 1970's and it was because of this watch that she actually learned how to read the time. It was left in a cabinet after her grandmother died and her grandfather told her she could have it if she learned to read the time from it.

Edit: I've been able to find service manuals online for a number of the Timex movements so I might be able to narrow the model down when I get home.

Don't know just want to say that's a lovely touching story if I'm honest

It's well with paying more than it's worth to service it given the sentimental price

+1, for me sentimental value always outguns financial.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    It's a pretty nice story.

She spent a lot of time with her grandparents growing up - pretty much every summer from about age 5 to onwards.

After her grandmother died she used to walk all around Dublin with her grandfather. Whenever they went past a building with a clock he would ask her what time it was to make sure she knew the time before he gave her the watch.

I'm other news on the watch, the 20-odd manuals I found for old Timex watches didn't really help narrow down the search for the model. There is also no indication on the dial of the model or year of manufacture like on vintage mens Timex watches. All I know is that it was made in Great Britain at this point.

I've sent off an email to see about getting in serviced. The watch can still be wound but does not feel good being wound.

@jurgen .good question regarding the gold plating. Will be interested in the answers

Here's the nondescript Timex. Please ignore my terrible hands. Rock climbing really takes it out of them.

Lies Frank! You just made **** of your hands edging straight razors! :p

I will do a bit of googling to try and help with the Timex I've time

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,913 ✭✭✭hitemfrank

It's the finger nail bed used to check the edge is good, not so much the inside the hands.

It's my poor t-shirts that take the brunt of the damage from honing straight razors and knives. Got a beard now, so the straight razors see next to no use these days.

Was doing a little googling Frank, have you taken off teh case back some models have the movement/model stamped inside the back if teh case

From eBay and Google vintage Timex searches it comes very close to a lot of 1960s Timex models looks wise

    Edit: very similar

    https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F264612973289

If you go to picclick.com and search something like Vintage Timex Women's Wind Up it pulls in all eBay listings and it's easier have a look there's a lot similar there unfortunately most don't have model numbers either

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,913 ✭✭✭hitemfrank

I'll try pop the back off tomorrow night and see. I've seen lots of similar looking ones, but no closer to finding a model name/number.

    Is it hand wind only?
Any chance a movement from the same era such as Timex Marlin would fit it ?

Yeah, it seems to be hand wind only.

Not a clue about the Marlin movement fitting but the only pictures of them I've seen look a fair bit bigger than this watch.

Once again, it seems Ireland's criminal fraternity are using luxury watches almost as currency, or at least, a uniform.

One shudders to think what it might have been through in that environment to end up like that.

Yeah I don't understand it at all. Tony Soprano's Rolex was always gleaming ;)

Pity some older watches are so small, something like this is a very smart watch but I just don't like the small size

    Exactly that!

A 39mm is about the smallest I can manage.

Even my old Tag F1 Pro feels very small on the wrist sometimes.

Makes buying something older that bit harder. Lots of older style watches work really well for an formal wear watch, but they're the size of a 20 cent coin!

On the other hand (bum tish), it's means more for those of us with the wrists of a 4 year old girl.

the watch is wrong is so many ways, all cab seem to do is find fake or vintage watches and declare them as worth tens of thousands when its actually worth less than the canada goose jacket (that could be fake too lol)
Yeah down through the years have seen people tell the gards on their twitter feed some of the watches are fake.

In fairness, you could buy an amazing fake for the price of a Canada goose jacket, they go for around 7 or 800 quid!

But that watch in the photo is one of the worse I've seen, it looks like a cross between 3 watches, €70 fakes are better, that looks like a €7 one

Just got the notification that my HKEd Bundeswehr v3 has been shipped :D

Spring festival and Corona virus aren't doing anyone in areas affected any favours and I honestly thought Ed would not be shipping for a little while yet.

So I shall be taking copious photo's when it arrives and hope that my $430 has at least some of the wrist presence of the original ;)

Next purchase may well be a Bund style strap, just to round out the look.
