Just in the last couple of weeks, my 8 year old son has started pulling his hair out, right that the top of his head. He has already developed something of a thinning/bald spot.

He doesn't even notice he is doing it really, just picking at it unconsciously. We can't think of any stress or anything that would cause this.

We are considering cutting it all off (it would have to be a very close cut to make it unnoticeable). He's obviously against that, but we thought it might give him nothing to pull at for a good few weeks, which might cause it all to pass over.

Does anybody have any experience of this, and if so how did they deal with it? We've tried getting him to wear a hat indoors, and it might stop it a bit but not always.

OP, I'm only opening this post to advise you really should consult with someone professional on this, instead of a message board. Please speak with a doctor who may be able to advise on it better.
