I played safe with 4:30 even though even that seems a pipe dream at the minute - am feeling a little apprehensive, just a tad!

I’d be happy to meet up before. I’m in wave 4 and the friends I’m coming into town with are in waves 2 and 3 so I’ll probably have a little spare time!

Absolutely TERRIFIED to break this table, but can someone please pretty please add me in for 4.59.59

...and then while you're at it run the race for me, thanks x

Could you guys stick me down for 5 hours please.
    Many thanks.

Wishing everyone the very best with this week's prep and of course the big day itself.

I myself am ready as I'll ever be. I'm still a bit unsure re. what way to pace out my race. The fear of running out of juice vs. not giving it my all is a constant battle. Seeing as I want to finish sub 5, I plan to run at a 11.20-11.30pace for the first 18 miles and then if there is gas still left in the tank, I'll push it out for the last few miles.

This plan however will change in the next hour, and the hour after that....

    Hi,

When we get to the start area on sunday, i assume someone scans our bib no to gain access?

Im just wondering when to fasten on the bib number... ie i will have my cosy disposables on so do people just fasten the bib number on once they get inside the start area/after bagdrop/in wave pen?
    Thanks!

Could someone be so kind to explain how to edit the table, so we don't have to be annoying others. Thanks.

My comment about not breaking the table was made in jest... it's easy fix if it goes awry.

Quote the most recent post that has the table, then remove the qoute tags, and add your line to the bottom in this fashion:

You will have say goodbye to any family/supporters before the bag drop. There are stewards before that to ensure only athletes are going through. I'm not aware scanning other than beeps at the actual start line. I would have the number on in advance on your running clothes, to avoid last minute messing about, loss of safety pins, etc.

They will just look at your bib as you enter before bag drop so you’ll have to lift up your hoody or whatever you are wearing. Once in then, the bag drop is all done by number so you find your area to leave your bag and go off to your wave and they’ll look again then at your bib as you go into your wave. Keep your clothes on as long as possible especially if it’s cold.

I don't mean to throw cold water on your aspirations, but I feel it necessary to point out that 5 hours is a touch on the aggressive side. You've had some good weeks of training, and some not-so-good weeks. My advice would be to aim for 5:30-35, but more importantly to start SLOWLY. It's going to be really easy to get carried away and start too fast, like you did in the Half Marathon - if you repeat that here it will not be a pleasant afternoon. If you could start at 13 mins/mile and just keep tipping along at that pace until deep into the second half of the race then you will have a far more positive experience.

Haven't posted here in long time. Motivation fell have way through the plan (knee niggle, life getting in the way & paralysis by analysis). Decided to stop over analyzing and constantly reading up stuff and keep things simple. Stuck to the plan, all runs done, pace kept slow and steady and finally got back into the swing of things.
Just wanted to say well done to one and all for getting this far and hope the day goes as planned. Enjoy (if that's the right word) the big day!!!!!

Last year's novices met up just before 8 directly across the road from the Shelbourne - it worked out pretty well. We got a nice "before" picture while we were all still in one piece :pac:

Sorry mentors me again :) I’m hoping for just under 5 hours. Should I keep eye on 5 hr pacers and then try to pick it up around mile 7 or wait until walkinstown roundabout? Also there seems to be quite a few of us hoping for same chip time... I’ll keep an eye out for you :) and thanks again to everyone here you’ve been such a support!!

In your case I think you could keep an eye on the pacers until Walkinstown, or even a bit further and then see if you have the strength to push on for 4:5x. Don't be afraid to leave the pacers pull away from you in the early going. A useful visualization I always remember is to think of yourself as being tethered to the pacers by a bungee chord - on the uphill sections the chord stretches as they inch away from you, and on the downhill sections they come back towards you.

Am I the only one who went and bought a cheap hoodie to throw away at the start, only to find myself wearing it all week? It's warm and snuggly! I've become a bit too attached to it now, so I'm going to buy another (hopefully even cheaper) one.

Tapering has gone OK, I do feel that speeding up on the runs (for strides etc.)is a bit less effort now, although my legs are still quite tired. I've finalized my outfit and travel plans for the day, and in the process of finalizing supporter positions. Gels are bought (today - I was cutting it a bit fine!).

After a lot of indecision, I decided to go with 3:59:59 as my A target. I'm still a little worried that it's too ambitious, but I downloaded a pacing strategy from the pace band website, and with a "very conservative" start and negative split I would be starting out at around 9:22 miles, which seems doable. I should be able to stick with the prescribed paces until the halfway point and then reassess. B goal is 4:20 and if I don't feel perfect on the day then I'll switch.

That’s a great visualization thank you! Sounds like a solid plan of attack thanks for the advice :)

How do you feel your training went. A difference of 20 mins is enormous if you think you'll be comfortable until half way. Maybe tighten that B goal to 4:10 to keep motivated!

I think you are well capable of dipping under the 5 hour mark, with a smartly run race. I'd suggest something similar to what I mentioned to Doc76 earlier - start around the 5 hour pacers, leave them drift away from you in the early going and reel them back in gradually once the course flattens out.

Yes, 4:20 is more a time that I feel I could do at a more comfortable pace for me, rather than a goal (which is by nature ambitious). Maybe 4:10 would be a better B goal - it's just that 4:10 has that awful "so near and yet so far" feeling about it - I feel if I did 4:10 it would be close enough to 4 for me to be disappointed, whereas 4:20 or 4:30 would be more of a "just enjoy the day" time, if that makes any sense?!

    Think of 4:10 as 250 minutes - that's a nice round number :)

Just popped back in to check out how ye are all feeling this week. I alternate between enthusiasm and bricking it and I did it last year so whatever ye 1st timers are feeling it is totally normal.

Ye are all gonna smash it. Just enjoy as much of it as you can take in the buzz of all the people cheering and clapping. If ye haven't put yer name on your race day tops I'd highly recommend it, when I started to feel a bit crappy about 30k in I made a point of smiling and thanking everyone who said my name and it did wonders for my self esteem.

And for those last couple of hundred metres enjoy the moment and do not look down at your Garmin as you cross that finish line. Put a huge smile on your face and you'll have fantastic photos to look back on.

    You've got this!!

    Ps I just got goosebumps : )
